Mission: Episode 17 - Crystal of Life
Location: USS Galileo-A, Deck 5, Holodeck 1
Timeline: MD -149, 1400 hrs

[ON]

Previously on Star Trek Galileo...

Allyndra scanned over the list. She would have to talk to the rest, but one name stood out along with the record. "I am going to say the youngest with the most potential first. If you agree let's get Caroline Flick. She also has the most knowledge on the particular isotope in case it comes up again. Tris if you do not mind could you please inform the Galileo and Nightingale of the situation."

“Yes Ma’am,” the Andorian responded positively. Tris thought, Finally, something to do, as he turned and took a few steps away from the group to better communicate.

And now the continuation...

Tris knew his comm badge would not reach the starships that were still light years away, but knew that using his PADD, he could route a signal through the Runabout’s subspace transmitter, where ever it might be on this holodeck. Lt. Shizn was able to link his comm, but not able to establish an active link with either vessel. So, he decided to just send an updated subspace message.

Activating his Comm, “Lieutenant Shizn to USS Galileo and USS Nightingale. We have made contact with leadership at the Colony. Dr. Lewis Simmons has reported that a terrorist group attacked and destroyed an area were radiological isotopes were stored. Exposure to this radiological agent is widespread. The situation is devastating, not being able to treat the survivors all at once is challenging. Triage is taking place. Our team is determining the best course of action with limited supplies and equipment. Please provide an ETA for your arrival. Shizn out.”

Blake tilted her head slightly as she moved in close to Allyndra, her voice it's customary calm tone whilst on duty. "If you think Caroline Fleck should be the priority, then heal her first. I don't want to stand around using up our precious time we have to help these people reading their life stories though. Get to work with Dr Wylde. You're the CMO, I trust your judgement on who should be seen to when. Use the rest of the team as you need them. We might not be able to treat the radiation exposure, but we can patch up some of the other injuries. If you need anything, just ask," she nodded firmly to her. She wasn't going to go into the ins and outs of her view on the ethics of it. Not during the exercise at least.

"We need to get anyone out of their current clothing, and into fresh uncontaminated clothing. Any sort of temporary shelter with plastic to keep out as much dust and dirt and further contamination would be nice as well."

Doctor Wylde settled next to them, arms folded as he glanced around the area with pursed lips. "We'll need to wash the patients too," he looked between them. "Once we get their clothes off, we'll need to wash them before getting new clothes on or they'll just get contaminated too."

Blake nodded to show she'd taken the information in before making her way to Aria, motioning her a little closer and away from the others. She kept her tone soft so only the petite security officer would hear her. "Keep an eye on the child," she breathed, shaking her head gently. "Any signs that she's not coping with this simulation, then we put it on hold and get her out," she said firmly. The girl's mental health was more important to the ex-counsellor's mind. "And keep your other eye on them," she motioned to the people with boards whose outlines were moving behind the green fumes.

Aria nodded as she held Scarlet's eyes, her face grim. "Oh trust me...I got this," she said before she looked over at Charlotte. Because she was worried about the girl. Who went Oh, this is what I will do, send a child on a training exercise like this anyway? Oh wait! Sadists!

Lt. Shizn stepped back into the area close to Commanders Blake and Warraquim. He reported, “Sirs, I was not able to establish a subspace link. I did however send a message with our updated situation. As well as requestion their ETA.”

"Alright, I have been reviewing notes that Doctor Flick had. I think we can help do a displacement with potassium ferric hexacyanoferrate..." she paused as she got odd looks, "also known as Prussian Blue. Also, I will need sorbitol or mannitol."

Flick looked at her and said, "We don't have either, replicator is futzy."

Allyndra nodded, "Mister Shizin, I am going to send you back to wave rider and have you get these materials made. As soon as you get this much replicated up we can get the first person started. I know it is going to take time."

“Yes Ma’am,” Shizn replied and then looked at his PADD when it chirped. He had received detailed instructions, which he glanced over quickly. He began to work through in his mind what he would be doing; finding the WaveRider on the holodeck, replicating an agents needed, then getting back without damaging any of it to begin healing these people. “I understand.” And with a nod moved off in the direction from which they had walked.

"Commander Blake, I am going to get started. I think we have a way to treat, but it is going to be slow."

"Then let's get started," Blake nodded firmly to her, moving away with her hands settling on her hips as she made her way to Lewis. "We need uncontaminated clothing for them, as soon as possible," she figured that the local man would be able to get hold of some far quicker than they could.

"Uch!" Lewis said. "Don't they train you people to come prepared?!? FINE! I'll be back in a moment!"

It actually took a few moments, but Lewis returned with a crate full of generic clothing of various sizes.

"Here!" he said. "Will these do?"

"They're fine," Blake replied shortly, already on the next item of her checklist. Turning to the next problem at hand, Blake started to look around with narrowed eyes. There was nothing sizeable enough outside to provide any kind of real shelter for them. They'd have to use a building. Flipping her tricorder open, she strode quickly down the path, keeping an eye on the readings to see where the contamination started to weaken. Her eyes fell on the basic building on the other side of the path, the large doors giving it a look of a warehouse or storage unit.

Scarlet ran over for a closer look, scanning to check there was no one in there before sliding carefully inside. A glance around confirmed her suspicions, with a few piles of crates towards the far end. There was also a sink in the closer corner next to a cleaning cupboard, although the towel had clearly seen better days. It would do though. A search of the untidy cleaning come junk cupboard turned up a couple of buckets and a pile of what felt like stiff fabric cloths that she dragged to the sink, and she made do with some smaller empty crates to make up the number on water containers. It wasn't great, but it would have to do.

Heading back to the team, Scarlet was tucking her tricorder away even as she started to speak. "Sylver, you're with me. We're going to help take the patients one by one to the warehouse..." she pointed back down the paved path way. "Gorvel, you're going to wait outside the warehouse. Once we bring you a patient, you're going to help them strip and wash them down with a cloth and tub of water. Once they're clean, get them inside the warehouse to be seen by the doctors and they'll be given fresh clothing. Once they're safely inside, Gorvel, you're going to go across the path to get rid of your bucket and cloth, then go back to the warehouse to get a fresh tub of water and cloth and take it outside ready for the next patient we bring you, to start all over again. Rice, I want you to stay here with the patients still waiting to be moved, but be ready to move if we need you. Does everyone understand?"

Charlotte felt useless. This was all useless. She just wanted to see something cool in the universe and now she was on a planet with people dying around her. Luckily Lieutenant Rice was being kind enough to watch over her. Listening to Commander Blake, Charlotte remembered what Lieutenant Rice had said about being given boring jobs. Watching people that weren't moving was pretty boring and safe - as long as whatever radiation they had been exposed to wasn't something that could get through the EV suit. But Starfleet would have thought about all the different things the suit could be exposed to without any danger, right?

"Hey," Aria moved close to Charlotte and nudged her, standing beside her. "I need you to do me a favour. Keep an eye on the crowds. If someone crosses the barriers, you tell me straight away." It would also force the girl's eyes away from the causalities around them and keep her eyes on moving targets. Distraction was sometimes helpful. Even knowing it wasn't real, Aria was tense and sweating inside the EV suit.

Charlotte looked back toward the other people that had gathered around. What was it about any culture of beings that wanted to see death and destruction? That just seemed wrong. Charlotte heard Lieutenant Rice and nodded.

"Sure," she said.

Moving toward the barriers slowly, Charlotte took up residence nearby to keep an eye on the oglers.

Allyndra left the rest to get started on the first patient. She knew Tris was a bit out of his depth but she also trusted that he was bright and flexible in terms of taking on new things. She would let Wylde handle the pre-decontamination. Now was the time to just get working. The first thing to get going would be saline and nothing but old fashioned scrubbing of her body until the first materials were available. She got to work.

Blake looked to Oliver, giving his firm arm a slap on the way past. "Lets get these people moving..." she crouched down to one of the patients, carefully wrapping his arm around her own shoulders, staying on one side of him so Oliver could take the other. "On your feet," she said softly, but between them they took most of his weight.

Oliver moved to the other side, looking over at Scarlet for a moment before he looked ahead. "A step at the time," he said quietly. If they had better equipment, he knew they could have carried one person each at the time over their shoulders. But there was little point to frighten them. If they could walk, which they still mostly could, then this was the best way. He kept an eye around them though, conscious of what situation they were in.

Elizabeth had been hiding since the first bang had gone off, she didn't know where mummy had gone and everyone looked so scary wearing things over there face and bodies. She had watched the robots in white pick up a sleeping lady and take her to a nearby building and Beth followed. She had kept her distance from the strangers like daddy taught her when from behind a man wearing something over his face tried to grab her. "Its ok little girl" He had said, but Beth screamed running for the robots.

Out of all the Robots two were smaller and away from the main group, she flung herself at the first one grabbing onto its leg. "HELP ME!" She said crying as she clung on.

Charlotte had not been paying attention to much of the crowd, only their size and where they were in accordance to the barriers. However, there was a loud yell. Well, a muffled yell, really, as it was a smaller voice. She felt something against her and looked down to see a small girl clutching to her. Charlotte considered the girl and looked to see what she was running from. It seemed like the people in the area were getting restless.

From Behind Charlotte the Mob that had now formed were shouting even louder and had started throwing bits of debris at the small contingent of police officers who were at the complete mercy of the 10-20 people advances on them.

Charlotte's eyes widened.

"Lieutenant Rice," she said, quietly first. "Lieutenant Rice!"

Her voice was louder the second time.

"Look!"

Charlotte started stepping backward holding the girl against her.

Aria moved forward towards Charlotte. She touched her arm before looking ahead. "Charlotte, you stay here. Don't move, just stand firm..." And then she picked the girl up, away from Charlotte despite the girl's protests, walking towards the crowd. "Hey!" she called out, her voice raising in pitch. Aria might be small, but she could raise her voice. She moved to the police officer closest to her, handing the girl over to him. "Keep her safe," she said, her voice a warning. Ignoring the debris that was being thrown at them she walked forward, hands held up, palms out. To show she was unarmed.

After a moment Aria spoke again, having to shout to be heard by the mob. "We are trying to keep people safe, it is dangerous to cross into this area! We appreciate you are all scared! I get it, I do. But no one can enter here until it has been made safe and those wounded have been helped. Please remain where you are and stop throwing things at us!"

The crowd did not react well to the federation officer intervening in their protest against the mixing of races in the colony. One larger man walked out his face covered with a bandana “Who the hell do you think you are, coming to our home to tell us what we can and can’t do!” The reaction through the crowd rippled as they began to push forward against the police barriers clearly not impressed with the woman’s words.

Aria's jaw tightened and she moved closer, to stand before the man. And wow, he was tall. "My name is Aria," she said as she watched him, keeping her voice raised. "I was born on Luna. I'm just stating fact. I am not wearing this suit for the fun of sweating. We have set this barrier as a quarantine until the situation is contained," she lowered her voice and met the man's eyes. Well. What she could see of it. "We are here as emergency relief for something terrible that has happened. We're not taking over, we are assisting. We are trying to save people's lives and keeping you out of harm. I'd love for it to be safe and nice, so you could all go about your business and do whatever you wanted. I'd love that. But right now, back there? It's not safe. And people are scared. Just...scared. And I am just trying to make sure no one else gets hurt...do you understand where I am coming from?"

The colonists began to waiver at the small woman's words, some even beginning to nod in agreement. It seemed a reality check was what most of the angry citizens needed, causing some to start leaving. "Where are you going?!" Shouted the man at the front, who was quite clearly the group's leader. "It's the people the likes of you that cause things like this! We were more than happy with our way of living until the federation showed up!" He said in another attempt, some colonists pausing in their departure.

In a desperate attempt to regain dominance the man advanced onto the small contingent, and more specifically towards the young security officer.

Aria let out a breath at seeing the group get smaller...and then her eyes widened at the man who was coming towards her. Okay. She glanced around at the green gas behind her before she moved forward to meet him. She didn't reach for her phaser. She could though. Could just stun him. Or maybe even just let him get himself killed, because I think Darwin had theories of evolution she thought. But she didn't want it to get any more serious than it was and truthfully, if she met him the further he was away from the radioactive, deadly, dangerous green gas that was rather obvious. "Sir," she said, stopping, watching him. "See that green stuff in the air over there? It's not something you want to step into, put it that way. I get you're upset. Agitated. But I'd be really grateful if you could go back home and hug your friends and family and keep calm until this area has been cleaned up."

Charlotte, left alone for a moment (but grateful), watched as Aria spoke to the man in the crowd. She had a feeling that Aria would be capable of handing any trouble that might occur, but she hoped that it wasn't going to get violent. If things started to get violent, though, Charlotte wasn't sure what would happen. Instinctively, she looked around hoping to find someplace to hide. Unfortunately, there wasn't anything close that she would be able to get to quickly. Her breath quickened slightly and waited.

Lucian paused his approach and looked around to where the woman was pointing, sure enough, the green supposedly harmful gas had filled the air in pockets and he was uncertain of himself. "You're just saying that," he said not so sure and murmurs from behind him caused Lucian to look over his shoulder. He wasn't about to risk dying. "Fine! But we will be back,” he said angrily turning around and pushing through the crowd. Slowly the rest followed and the crowd began to disperse.

Aria remained standing until they had gone, only then letting out a harsh breath through her teeth. She turned on her heel and walked over to Charlotte, shaking her head. "Next time, maybe they'll programme some bloody common sense," she murmured before she put her hands on her hips.

Scarlet watched Aria with a calm gaze from where she and Sylver had returned to pick up another patient to take to the warehouse. She'd been watching from afar, but had been content to let Aria take care of the situation. She had confidence in the young security officer and her ability. If Aria had called for help, she'd have gone over there in a heartbeat. But Aria had kept cool and confident, keeping it under control without her help. There had been no need for her to interfere. Briefly meeting Aria's eyes, she gave her a subtle nod of approval for how she'd handled it alone. Blake swiftly returned her attention to the patients, picking a woman at random who appeared to be half human, half romulan, nodding to Sylvar for him to help her get the woman moving to the warehouse.

Sylver picked the woman up with Scarlet, smiling weakly as he started to walk with her. He moved to switch the sound so that he had a private channel with Scarlet and no one could hear him outside of the helmet of his suit. "She has come a long way since I last saw her," he said, referring to Rice, before he looked at Scarlet. He had seen her around last time on the Galileo, but rarely interacted with her. Except the times he had been over when Verity was babysitting Lily. "How have you been, Commander?"

Scarlet nodded to him to assure she was well enough. "Busy," she said with a slight glint in her eye, her head tilting as if to indicate the new ship. "It's good to have you back in the crew, Sylvar," she added, making it clear that she remembered him well enough. Of course, she had reviewed the records of the new crew, but she remembered the man who had made her friend happy.

He smiled at the words, unable to stop himself. "It's good to be back, Blake," he admitted as he looked ahead. "Especially with Verity there as well. How is your daughter doing?" He asked, not just because it was polite, but because after a few stints of spending time with Verity, he had grown fond of the little girl. She was a bright one and just adorable.

"Good...although much better now that she's back on a ship, and with Verity," she glanced to him at that, a small smile on her half obscured features. "Like someone else it seems," she added lightly, but it was clear that she was pleased for them. Life was too short not to be with the person that made you happy.

Oliver chuckled warmly at the words and gave a small nod, swallowing. "Verity is...special. I can't believe I managed to bag myself a man like that," he admitted before he bit his lip. "It is good to be with him again, in the same room rather than...just messages." And it had been hard but they had stuck to it and this was the reward.

Blake smiled gently to herself at that, shifting slightly to get a more comfortable grip. It was almost reassuring, to see relationships could face hardships and survive. It wasn't always a happy ending. Not from her experience at least. "Then make it work, Sylvar. Make it work."

[Isolation area]

Allyndra got the first patient going and figured that she could be transferred. The scans indicated that the prussian blue seemed to be binding to the material. She needed to get her out and then get the next person in.

There was a bunch of noise from outside and stuck her head out. "Mister Wylde what is going on? We need to get these people in an out of here as fast as possible." She had already tagged Runama P’tel as the next patient in. This was all guess work and she had nothing to go on but what she thought was possible best case for recovery followed by their age and then potential. She did not like that, it was a crappy way to triage but it was what it was. She would have to justify in her medical log but whatever was going on was not help either.

Wylde shook his head as he peered through the green haze. "I think the crowd were threatening to riot and get into the radioactive area instead of running away from the green radioactive gas like sane people..." he said drily with a slight tilt of his head.

"By the Twins!" Allyndra sputtered. "Hope Blake tells them if they do not cooperate they are all going to die. We have enough problems as it is."
