Mission: Episode 17 - Crystal of Life
Location: USS Galileo-A, Deck 5, Holodeck 1
Timeline: MD -149, 1400hrs

[ON]

Previously on Star Trek Galileo...

Wylde shook his head as he peered through the green haze. "I think the crowd were threatening to riot and get into the radioactive area instead of running away from the green radioactive gas like sane people..." he said drily with a slight tilt of his head.

"By the Twins!" Allyndra sputtered. "Hope Blake tells them if they do not cooperate they are all going to die. We have enough problems as it is."

and now the continuation...

It was a significant walk to the WaveRider. The PaDD Lt. Shizn had been given at the beginning of the mission did provide an area map, identifying his location, the location of the shuttle, and the location he had just left and would return to in the shortest time available.

Tris kept his phaser in hand. He had no idea what other plans might be in the mastermind of this scenario on the holodeck. Holodecks had always confused him and he tried to not use them for his entertainment. He had no idea how he could walk in one direction for 15 solid minutes and still remain in the ship. It baffled him to the point that his antennae would hurt.

About have way to the shuttle, the Andorian had to pull off the helmet of the bio-suit. It was causing more serious heat insulation than Tris wanted to deal with. On top of that, his antennae were feeling a bit ‘raw’ from rubbing the surface from the inside.

He probably took longer than needed. He could have run the entire way, but he would have overheated, even with the cooling suit he wore under his uniform. He also wouldn’t have been able to watch for any threats that might be around the next hill, bush, or tree.

As the walk lengthened, Tris’ mind pondered many things about this exercise. One of the thoughts that did occur to him was that he would need some assistance in carrying back all the ampoules required. He could have carried the cases, not being that heavy, but they would be quite bulky and difficult to carry for any distance. In the end he realized that it would just be ridiculous. He knew there should be a grav-sled in the storage compartment.

Gratefully without incident, Shizn arrived at the WaveRider to find it closed and secured. He tapped in a code on an exterior keypad and it opened up for him with ease. He quickly made his way to the replicator. Some of the programming of what was needed had been done as he had walked. With the established requirements, it could produce 400 vials per replication. He calculated the production time for the amount of vials needed. He accepted that the task was ‘do-able’. But there were some things that had to be handled in person. These were safeguards, so that someone could not access the replicator system remotely and cause chaos unless someone was present.

Tris confirmed the expected production time for the extended run he would need. He knew this would not all be done by him sitting in a chair. He would need to physically move the cases off the replicator pad, out of the shuttle, and onto the grav-sled that he had pulled from storage.

With everything complete, Tris closed up the shuttle, securing it, then sent a digital message to Cmdr Warraquim that his task had been successfully completed and that he was on his way back to her location.

Tris found that the time going back was a bit longer and more difficult. He had to hold and guide the grav-sled with both hands, so he could not hold onto his phaser. So, he was a bit more cautious as well, which took more time. In addition, the way back was not smooth nor flat. He found that the anti-grav sled did not like going over non-uniform terrain, but he did his best. Tris really worked up a sweat for an Andorian, which really was not a good idea. The cool-suit he wore could only handle so much stress before it would not be helpful to him and he would become ill due to the excessive heat. Thank goodness that he had brought a significant supply of food and water from the shuttle as well. The drawback, was that half way to the colony, he had to put back on the bio-suit in the appropriate way for safety. His antennae began to twitch, most likely due to the excessive heat, but that was something he would need to endure to get this medication there in time.

Lt. Shizn arrived at the facility, feeling hot and exhausted. His antennae were very irritated and wanted to feel cool air on them again, very soon. He looked about not seeing the Commander, but then just called out, “Does anyone know where I can find Commander Warraquim?” He got a couple strange looks from others within their bio-protective suits, but he finally got one of them to point to the left, which was toward a corridor with many doors off from it.

Almost fully exhausted now, Lt. Shizn pushed the cart into the treatment area and called out, “Commander? I have your ampoules.” He couldn’t wait. He had to sit down and relax, finding a small case to sit on, his arm leaning on a taller case next to it.

Allyndra returned and nodded. "Thank you Mister Shizan. I am going to get started. Are you alright? Overheated in that suit?"

He looked up at the Commander, and needed to move the head piece a little so he could see her, “Yes Ma’am, but I’ll be alright. I just need to rest and slow down for a bit and let the cool suit do its job.”

"Very well," Alyndra replied, but she still had concern in her voice. "If you need to, go back to waverider, decontaminate and get that suit off. You can even set the environmental controls down to something more comfortable. Now I best get back to work. Take it easy I do not need a good officer down."

“Thank you Commander,” Shizn replied with a nod. And then added, “Understood.” He really liked her idea, but that was much too far to walk and be even more wore out. Well, at least at the moment.

Allyndra nodded and got back to work. She checked the progress of patient one and the combination seemed to be working. Time would tell though.

She figured good enough stability and then moved her so she could start on...she had to look again, Runama P’tel. She would need more help, but had no idea exactly what was going on. She got the drip going on P'tel and then scanned the list again.

"Let's go ahead and get Jamie McNeil in pre-prepped," she said. Hopefully, Tris was feeling better and maybe Wylde could help as well. She hated doing this based on nothing more than a quick little bit of information. She constantly strove for younger hoping that youth would have a better chance and also potential if they survived.

Somehow Loreli got in front, but it did not matter that much. Allyndra ordered the rest to be sorted out. She hated making these decisions, but it was what it was.

Allyndra got drips going even if there was no place to put patients. Time was of the essence at this point and the longer things went the less chance of recovery or survival.

From outside of the isolation area shouts and screams began to resonate. IIt was obvious something was happening and whatever was happening, wasn't good. Suddenly a local authority burst through the door, "The lab's reactor is becoming unstable. We have orders to evacuate everyone. We don't have room for the remaining casualties and our main priority is getting you out of here." Damen explained, a name which was pinned to his chest in the form of a badge.

There was more noise and shouting from outside. Allyndra shook her head wondering if it might be easier to just have Blake phaser stun the rest so she could get some work done. That is when a man burst in and made the announcement to evacuate due to the reactor going unstable.

"Hold on, we just got a few going," Allyndra remarked and then had a thought. "How many minutes do we have?"

It was clear Damon wasn't happy with the woman's words, "Not enough. My orders are to clear you and your team out of the area on our transport immediately. Anyone not able to fit in the transports is being directed to the Bunker cave system 2 kilometres to the south, but we don't have the manpower to move these casualties ourselves.” Damon’s voice was desperate as he spoke rapidly. "Now come on make your choice, leave them, stay or make a break for the cave system, but either way we’re leaving with or without you."

"What's going on here?" Blake asked as she and Sylvar entered, settling the patient in their hands down to the ground. It was easy to pick up on the frustration in the man's tone and it was something that pulled the muscles in her neck just a little tighter.

Damon turned to the new arrival and identified, by the way, she spoke to be their leader. "You must be in charge here? I was informing your team that they leave immediately with our transport ships. The lab's reactor is compromised despite the emergency team’s best efforts however they seem reluctant to leave the injured as we dont have the room for them."

Blake's features became cooler at the predicament, her face still and gaze steady. She finally gave a slight nod in acknowledgement that she'd taken in the information, but gave no more away than that. She opened a comm link to the entire away team. "All team members, report to the treatment area immediately."

"There has to be a way of taking them with us," Alexion shook his head with a frown, his lips pursing with his disapproval. He couldn't feel for the soulless pretend people, but the talk of leaving people behind to die was putting a bitter taste in his mouth. And dragging up too many unwanted memories.

Allydnra thought about it. "I think there might be, here help me get the beds strapped together and someone get me Tris please."

Alexion watched with a frown of curiosity, looking over the patients as he tried to work out where this was going. He let his hands drop to his sides, moving to follow orders as he considered their predicament.

Lt. Shizn entered the treatment area, dogging carts and medical personnel still moving about. He stepped over to stand by a wall out of the way. He was actually feeling better now after cooling down and resting.

Allyndra waved Tris over while she was helping with the beds. "Tris," she had lost her formality. "Sorry, but I need you to get to the Waverider as fast as you can. Get her up and we are going to tractor beam these people on the beds and get out of here."

The Andorian had moved over when requested. He was somewhat baffled by the Commander’s request. He began to think through what he needed to do when Commander Blake stepped up and interjected.

Blake shook her head as she moved in closer to them with a slight frown, giving a swift swipe of her hand. "Negative. We can't get the waverider any closer. We can't use it."

Shizn spoke up, “Can we just back up for a minute? Even if I did bring the shuttle here,” looking to Blake, “against the Commander’s wishes, . . I just can’t lift people up with a tractor beam. They would have to be in a containment of some kind.”

"The longer we stand around the less time we have. Alright, let's see if there is some alternate plan." Allyndra responded frustration dripping from her normally cheerful musical voice.

Damn listening growing increasingly impatient, "Your commander is right, your shuttlecraft won't be able to safely navigate here in time. Even we are having the use of ground vehicles as our own ships are having trouble, now please hurry up"

Aria had taken Charlotte and made her walk with her, frowning as she walked over. She stopped the girl outside, taking a deeper breath as she glanced over to what was happening inside. She didn't want to contaminate anything, so she kept her hands to herself so to speak. After a moment she looked at Charlotte. "Let's stay out of their way until they tell us what to do," she said to the girl, smiling weakly.

Charlotte had been uncertain of what had been going on for the last several minutes. People were coming and going and the doctor was helping as many people as she could. Aria moved closer to Charlotte and Charlotte was glad for the security officer's presence.

The brunette nodded.

"Yeah," she said. "I think that would be a good idea. I'm no good anyway."

Aria reached to tap her shoulder, shaking her head. "You're here without any training. You've done good. Commander in one short and sharp statement, how do you think that went and then one after another the same."

The remaining away team members gathered in the treatment area. There was a nervous tension in the air. They didn’t have to wait long for the Commander to begin.

"The reactor's compromised, we have to evacuate asap, but there's not enough room for the patients," Blake filled in the team on the predicament they found themselves in, both so they could get ready to move, and in the hopes they could get thinking on a plan. Blake folded her arms tight across her chest, frowning with the grim consequences of the decision in front of them. She turned to Damon, meeting his eyes as she moved a step closer to him. "There's 8 of our team, and 10 patients. If you have a suitable transport, would you be willing to take the patients instead of us?" she asked bluntly.

Damon couldn't beleive the words leaving the commanders lips, but also understood where she was coming from. "We could save 8 of them." He admitted, "But my orders are to take you to safety. They might not even live through the ordeal." He sighed. “Hurry the transporter is outside. We can't waste any more time and you must run." Damon left the room and towards the transport.

Allyndra heard a minor explosion in the distance. It could be the prelude to a bigger one. "No time for the waverider, cram as many people as we can. Commader Blake?" She left the question open as technically she was first officer and higher ranked.

"We're giving up our spots on the transport," Blake said firmly, already moving to get a patient to their feet. "Everyone, help a patient to the transport, asap...make sure we take those who have had treatment so far...once they're loaded we're going to run towards those caves on foot. If we're lucky, we'll get far enough for our suits to protect us the last leg of the sprint," she instructed even as she motioned each team member towards a patient to take out to the transport, having to pick the last untreated patients to be taken to the transports at random.

Oliver moved quickly at the order, taking one of the patients that had been treated. He gave a small smile...Blake and he had taken this person here, so it made sense to follow it all through. "You'll be fine," he said, the words escaping.

Aria looked over at Charlotte before she nodded. She moved to help...luckily the person seemed to be able to move themselves, so she was just lending a supporting hand.

Charlotte did everything in her power to not freak out at what the commander had just said. This was not going the way she had planned, nor did it seem like it was going the way the simulation was planned. Instead of thinking about that, though, Charlotte moved closer to Aria and helped her with the patient.

Allyndra left the patients strapped down and did her best to make sure the drips were secured. "This one, this one," she pointed as each was ready.

Tris scooped up one of the patients, an elderly man with a kind face. He made his way outside and helped the man into the transport, patting him on the leg afterward, giving him a confident smile.

Verbally counting the patients into the transport, Blake gave a firm nod to Damon, her features set firm with determination as she slapped the side of the transport twice to signal all 8 patients were loaded and they could evacuate.

Damon closed the back hatch and turned to the group, "You are all crazy you know that right? I dont even know if we'll make it, but atleast these people have a fighting chance." He went to turn to leave before saying, "I suggest running, really fast." And with that they mounted the vehicle and left.

Scarlet pulled her tricorder out to get the direction towards the cave system in the south, motioning with her head before slotting it away sharply. "Let's go!" she started to run, motioning for the rest of the team to start sprinting. She drove a fast pace, and it was clear she expected the others to keep up.

Tris Shizn did well at the beginning. He was a very strong Andorian. The cool suit under his uniform and bio protective suit did help to a point. His antennae were beginning to feel raw again. That stinging sensation of his antennae was the worst. His breath was beginning to be labored. His fear was that the cool suit would fail, at which point he would have to drop out and hope for the best.

Aria reached for Charlotte the moment the order had been given and she started to run. "Go! Quick," she snapped at Charlotte, driving her. And herself. She had to run as quickly as she could, which was claustrophobic in the suit. She wished she could rip the helmet off. But that was...well. Not exactly what she was meant to do.

The command froze Charlotte for a brief second before her brain told her to start moving. Moving? How could she move in this suit? How were they going to get far enough away to protect themselves? If this was what Away Teams were like, Charlotte was suddenly adjusting her opinions of learning from Luke.

Grateful for all the training he had done, for all the laps around ships and bases, Oliver Sylver kept a good pace. He could ignore the suit and the helmet. He just didn't think about it. He kept an eye on those around him, in case someone fell behind. As a result, he more or less took up the back. Risky, perhaps, but it was training from years ago that kicked in and a sense of belonging. You didn't leave anyone behind.

While normally she could run with the best, the suit was too bulky and weighed her down. Weighed her down, that thought stuck and shrugged out of the suit. The dust was all inhaled and she could keep the respirator portion on, the rest on her skin could be washed later. That freed her wings. There was one other bit. She turned to Tris and said, "I am going to give you a few ccs of Tricordazine. You will never know you are overheated until we are in safety."

Tris was panting in the mask, unfortunately fogging up the inside of the view plate. He did good to nod confirmation to the Doctor instead of speaking. He waited for the injection and understood that this was only going to take away the feeling of overheating. He still most likely was going to be sick very soon. But, better to be sick than dead.

Despite everything working against them, the rough terrain, their environmental suits and the hot weather, the team had made considerable distance when the first explosions ripped through the air. A shockwave pulsed from the lab and raced towards the team much like similar to the speed and aggressiveness of a volcanic pumice cloud. Above them, birds flew overhead screeching as they too attempted to reach safety in the mountains. From in the distance the front bunker systems could be seen.

The explosive sound struck them from behind. Tris felt it more than heard it. He turned slightly, while still moving away, and saw the expansion of dust and debris spreading on all directions, as well as the trees laying over like tall grass cut down. This created an urgent desperation in him. Tris held his breath and ran faster than he had run in the last 5 minutes.

Oliver didn't look back. He looked forward, a part of him recognising the exercise. Another part, the primal part in him, pushing himself further. Pushing himself to the edge of his endurance even if his lungs hurt with every breath and his legs felt numb. He had felt this before, in the war. That primal fear that kept you going even when your body wanted to stop. It was getting difficult though.

Once the shot was given Allyndra ran hard, but with wings moving in a blur and it was like bounding with each bound going higher and higher until the wings had enough air to support. Akkadians might not be fast fliers compared to other animals but it was faster than running.

Charlotte ran and ran, feeling her legs begin to burn. She was afraid the explosion was searing through her suit and had to remind herself that it wasn't possible. But her legs hurt. The brunette stayed close to Aria - as close as she could without falling over - and hoped that they would be able to stop running soon.

The heat tightened in Blake's chest as she ran hard, not allowing herself to let up on the pace despite her burning lungs. She could see the caves ahead, drawing closer a rapid step at a time, and she willed herself to ignore everything else...to ignore the harsh but controlled breaths, to ignore the screeching birds, to ignore the blast behind them. She fixed her gaze on their target, and focused on nothing else but getting there.

Finally, after what seemed like far too long, Blake half skidded into the entrance of the cave. She fought her want to bend over and pull the helmet off to drag breath back into her lungs, and instead remained at the mouth of the cave to count each team member inside.

Oliver moved to stand beside Blake, his heartbeat and breathing loud inside the helmet. He did the count as well. Two was better than one for this and a miscount would be catastrophic. He looked at Blake for a moment with admiration. That woman's training was excellent and how she kept her head cool in these training scenario was impressive.

Aria stumbled into the cave, breathing hard as she started moving deeper into it. Her eyes widened when she saw it was already quite full. "Like Helm's Deep..." she murmured to herself, shaking her head.

Charlotte couldn't believe how much she had run in the past few minutes. Probably more than she had run in a long time, even when Commander Nara was having her run in the gym. At least she had had that kind of training or she really would be regretting this trip.

The cave entrance was ahead and Charlotte saw Commander Blake making sure everyone was safe. The girl came barreling in and barely managed to stop herself before crashing into Aria and instead fell onto the cave floor. She looked up, breathing heavy and adjusting to not only the dim light in the cave, but the fog of her breath on the helmet visor, and saw the amount of people currently huddled in the cave.

I hope there's enough room, she thought to herself and slowly pushed herself up to await further orders.

Alexion hadn't been far behind the girl and reached down to take Charlotte's hand to help pull her up to her feet with a firm tug. The Doctor's hearts were beating hard from the sprint, but with the labour split between the two hearts, his breathing wasn't quite as ragged as it was for others. He slapped the girl on the back for good measure, as if to say 'you're good, kid', moving further in to check who else was already in the cave.

Kala was exhausted beyond all measures. She hadn't spent a lot of the time doing much, just passing tools here and of course, helped to load the patients onto the transport, but the run had drained her of everything, so after he body reached the threshold of the cave she collapsed against a rock panting in exhaustion. "This... Sucks,” she said making a mental note to hit the gym again.

Tris’ body ached all over, but seeing everyone disappear into the rock-face ahead gave him hope and he trudged on as one of the last to enter the cave. He clammered into the darkness, which was full of people staggering about and falling or sitting. Tris himself couldn’t seem to stand straight without wobbling. He finally gave in and collapsed onto the dusty cave floor. More than anything his antennae stung as he sat there panting to catch his breath.
