John grumbled as he got his kit and headed off toward the brig. "You would think that whoever put this bucket together would have made sure everything was in working order," he grumbled as he headed along to the destination.

He knew better. That was why some of these were called shake down cruises. Mostly the shake the stuff that was not going to work or had not bee quite properly seated or a million other little niggling details.

It took a few minutes but he finally arrived at the brig and skidded to a stop as he observed a certain crew member. It was that mangy Caitian that had been insulting and was sniffing after Mimi like a cat in heat. He clenched his jaw for a moment and then said, "Heard you had a problem down here."

M'rythr didn't speak at first his tail flicking from left to right behind him in annoyance, that it was him they had sent down to fix the Brigs surveillance system. "The surveillance system isn’t recording sound. The chief wants it fixed, so just get on with it. I asked for assistance hours ago” he said bluntly retuning to the seat behind the main console. Anger boiling inside him as he watched the Human from over the console, he couldn't comprehend how Mimi would choose him.

"Sorry, but a hundred little things still not working quite right," John got his tools and scanner out and started to take a look. He did some tracing and looked puzzled. Everything on this end was alright. He got up and then went toward M'rythr. "Problem seems to be here," he said leaning over the Caitian without thinking.

M'rythr was observing the security monitor and hadn't seen John approach him. As he spoke he caught him off guard, his tail shooting up bolt rigid with his hairs on end. "Baaaack off Human!" He said through his gritted teeth angrily. "The problem is over there! I've already had engineers here to look at the problem, I just need it fixed" He had stood up and moved to the camera and pointed at it.

"Well that is not what my readings are telling me. The camera is working fine it is the feed back to the console. If you had someone here already then why did they not fix it then?" John barked back. It made no sense that engineers would be here and not fix a problem. He glared a moment but got out his scanner again and moved back to the camera and started a scan again moving following the circuitry. He got about three quarters back to the console and where M'rthyr was standing. "Hey pussy cat mind moving?"

His tail this time shot bolt rigid before swaying left to right in mocking distress, what John didn't know is that he had been the one to damage the CCTV's sounds recording mechanism and had hoped sincerely that it would be John to come to repair it. "What did you just call me!" he said in distress his Catain eyes staring daggers into the Human and not moving.

"Huh?" John had completely not paid attention. "I said move I can't trace this circuit otherwise." He pulled up looked at the Caitian. While he did not say it he sure wanted to say 'before I make you move.' "You know you have a bad habit of being in the wrong place and the wrong time," he snarled. "And that includes hanging around my girl. Now can I damn well finish?" He felt his fists clenching.

Eyeing the man like his prey M'rythr glared his teeth at him "She is not your girl she belongs to me and there's nothing you can do to stop what she has coming for her." He said Paying great detail to Johns fists and how he positioned his body. If everything worked out well the tampered security system would only show him defending himself and fortunately for him no sounds.

John got stubborn at that. He clenched his jaw and his tricorder. "That is where you are wrong. She gets to make her own choices. If she likes you then fine. However, last I check puddy cat, she was not liking your company. Now let me finish my job here."

He laughed, "That's not what her eyes tell me when she's undressing me with them, or by the way she arches her back whenever we pass. She just waiting for the perfect moment to leave you and jump straight onto me" M'rythr said, venom in his mouth as he spoke.

John fumed and he glared at the Caitian. He tried to keep his calm, but there was a time and place that things crossed the line. He spoke with slow words as one would to a child. "I would take those back right now."

"Dont like the truth? Its ok, don't feel bad because you lost to an inferior being. It was always going to happen you know." He said in almost sing song, "Mimi was always destined to be mine and as soon as you're out of the picture, hell it doesnt matter because either with you here or with you gone she will be mine." He smiled his white fangs glistening.

"Look bub, you can insult me all you want. I could care less but you start saying things about Mimi and......well that is crossing a line. Now apologize for saying things about her." John took a step forward his eyes glinting in warning. This cat was nasty piece of business but he had dealt with worse. It was the name calling on a little lady though that bothered him the most. There was that time back in Georgia when someone had said something about his sister. It was not even in jest, and that had gotten him into trouble. He could feel the same anger now roiling up.

"Apologise? To you? I think you've been drinking from, what is it you humans say Koolaid?" M'ryth laughed. "Just face it, there's nothing you can do about it, Mimi will have my litter and you'll be all but forgotten about, I cant wait to have my way with her. Maybe I'll even slip in some catnip to really spice things up, at least that way she'll be more... Co-operative."

"Is that so?" John said through clenched teeth. He had all he could stand and this kitty making remarks about Mimi like that was too much. The left hand came up quickly for an upper cut but was more a distraction to draw the eyes from the haymaker right. John was no pampered or highfalutin Academy type. He was a farm boy having worked hard in his earlier years and the muscles were still there. He had been in plenty of bar fights and knew how to distract an opponent and that when one hit, one did so to make it authoritative. The upper cut made M'rythr move slightly to his left which put him in line squarely with the haymaker of John's right. There was a satisfying, at least to John, crunch as his fist connected with the Caitian's nose.

M'ryth hadn't quite anticipated John being as quick as he was so when his Jaw snapped he let out a hiss and then a cry as he scratched at John with his extended claws. Despite his Jaw hanging on by a thread and the pain coursing through his face, adrenaline kept him going as he now defended himself, albeit through a flurry of scratches and punches deceitfully made weaker so he appeared to be the victim in all of this.

John ignored the raking and the punches. He got in close where the swiping claws could not do as much damage. Body punches to wear his opponent down and managed to get a good right upper cut into the solar plexus.

"Hey, hey, hey!" the raised voice of Gabriel Stark came from the open doorway. The security officer didn't stay there long though, running across to force himself between them, trying to physically push them apart. "That is enough!" he shouted at them, shoving harder to try and split them up.

At this point, the Caitain was grappling with John his nose bleeding and his jaw obviously disjointed. "Help me! He's crazy!" He managed to say almost unintelligible through the pain of his jaw to his friend and colleague Mr Stark. "ARGH!" He said as he forced the men to topple and guiding his knee into John's stomach to make it look accidental and defensive.

John groaned as he got the knee and he quite his pummeling. His vision cleared as his anger cooled a bit. "Cat crap started it with his big damn mouth!" John said getting up.

Gabriel snatched a breath at their continuing aggression, slapping his commbadge. "Stark to Wyatt, we have a fight in the security office..." he called for the boss, not quite believing what he was having to say. He pushed up close to John to force him back to try and keep them separated. "I said enough!"

Luke had just started getting into bed and winding down for the night when Gabriel's call came over the come system. "Only my way" he said annoyance clear in his voice as he quickly began to throw on some uniform before heading out the door. Fortunately the journey wasn't long and he soon found himself rounding into the security office, face angry and frown lines protruding. "What on Earth is going on in here!" He demanded.

John had cooled down though he still glowered and the Caitian who was now really feeling the pain of the haymaker. "This piece of excrement started saying a lot of nasty things about Ensign Mimi. She........well she and I are good friends." John thought it best not to bring up their real situation.

"I don't care what or who it was over, who started it?" he asked, looking between the two men. Luke could see his own security officer M'Ryth was clearly the more badly beaten whilst John looked relatively unscathed. "You know what, Mr Stark keep them separated. This is the very reason we have security cameras onboard." The chief of security didn't wait for Gabriel to respond and moved quickly to the Security console. Navigating through the menus he rapidly brought up the recording and watched it soundlessly. "There's no sound." He said before seeing John throw the first punch and M'rthyr only appearing to be defensive in the matter, though his back was turned.

Standing up he looked once again between the two men, "M'rthyr I'm going to ask you once. Did you say or do anything to provoke Mr Holldenday?"

The Caitain stood with a shocked expression on his face. "No sir, nothing. I may have joked about the engineers taking so long to repair the internal security cameras but nothing I thought would result in this. He's had it out for me since I got here, all over a damned girl." He admitted blood clotting in his fur.

"Lying piece of shit! Check the damn recording then!" John sputtered. If it would not get him a bunch of time in a penal colony he would have snapped the Caitians neck right then and there.

"Quite! Mr Stark show this thug to the brig." Luke said in a demanding tone and pointing at Hollenday before turning back to John himself. "I'm sick of hearing your lies. The security footage clearly shows you throwing the first punch and I'm inclined to believe my security officer. Not only that the evidence is clearly weighed against you. "Mr M'rthyr I trust you can make it to sickbay."

He nodded trying to contain his smile and laughter, though it wasn't hard as the damage John had inflicted had been true and hurt like hell. "Yes sir, I'm sure I can make it. I'll message ahead so they know I'm coming" The Caitain bowed his head to the chief and began to leave.

"I want a full statement on my desk tomorrow morning if I find out you're lying so help me god," Luke warned before turning to John as his security officer left to get fixed up. "And you, I want a statement if you're capable of telling any truths. I will be informing your department head that as of this moment you are being detained for assaulting a fellow crewman with a trial date pending. I would have you off my ship and out the airlock if it was up to me." The chief turned to Stark "Mr Stark, ensure 24-hour watch is maintained, no visitors except for senior officers or express permission from me and three meals a day, rations."

Luke, again didn't wait for a response the whole situation had put him in a foul mood. "And schedule a two-hour-long training session, obviously we're all in need of some defensive training if this thug could land a punch on one of my officers. Don't care when or what time just make it happen. If he makes so much as a noise stun him. I don't want to be disturbed over this matter until I've actually had some sleep, understood?" This time Luke waited for his answer.

"Understood," Gabriel moved around to the other side of the brig control panel, starting to log the initial report for having to put someone in the brig. He glanced to Luke with dark eyes, not able to remember a time seeing him in quite such a bad mood. "Do you want to enter the full report yourself once you're back in?" he asked quietly. As the first person on the scene, he could put in a report himself, but he got the feeling Wyatt wanted to keep his grip on the incident.

He shook his head his eyes showing obvious signs of fatigue, "You were first to attend the scene. I'll trust what you say is accurate and add my account on the bottom before sending up the chain. Is there anything else or have you got this all secured down now?" The chief asked.

"I've got this," Gabriel assured to him with a nod, sighing at the predicament as he settled behind the console. "Leave it with me, 'Commander."
