Pressing a hypospray to Abbey's neck, Tuula woke her patient. "All right Abbey, lets try that again," she said, trying to offer her difficult patient a smile.
Abbey's head was spinning and hurt like crazy. As she came to the memories came around and she remembered her great escape but only remember making it to the door, she remember the back brace which still felt foreign to her back. Looking around her she could see blurs of white and blue. "Why cant I go" She said testing her mobility but finding she couldn't move much at all as the restraints pulled against her. An overwhelming fear eclipsed her as no pain stopped her struggle against them "LET ME GO!" She demanded wriggling and a tearing feeling coming from her abdomen. Her scream sounded foreign and almost demonic.
"Abbey, I had to restrain you for your own good, so you don't hurt yourself again" replied Tuula. Growing weary of this patient, Tuula had tried to put on a cheerful tone in the futile hope that her attitude might be infectious. But instead, her effervescent voice made it sound like she was enthusiastic to have a patient before her, helpess in restraints. "Please stop resisting, I assure you it will make your stay in sickbay much more pleasant."
Abbey looked to Tuula her cheeks puffy and stained with salty white streaks from tears that had ridden down them "Don't you understand? I don't want to be heard, I don't want to be better I don't even want to be alive!" Abbey grit her teeth as she said those words she wanted to take them back she surprised herself how she felt, she couldn't really mean she wanted to be dead?
"That is not an option, not in my sickabay," Tuula said coldly as she waved the remainder of the staff out. Except for Mott, they all got the hint and left her alone with the patient. She rolled her eyes at him before turning back towards her patient. "Abbey, is that really how you feel?"
Abbey bit the side of her cheek summing up the question, she had shouted it enough, thought about it enough but when Tuula asked her all she could do was stare. "Yes, I mean maybe," she said.
Olsam stared on, oblivious as to the unfolding touching moment between doctor and patient. He had his grading rubric open and at the ready, inputting commentary as the scene played out. He made a note that he would have just knocked Abbey out with a sedative the second she'd started becoming difficult - again - but held back from deducting any points as Tuula's approach seemed to be working. So far.
Tuula held one of Abbey's restrained hands in hers and with a piece of gauze, wiped away Abbey's tears. The last time she had this conversation she was the one in the hospital bed and it was Jaana holding her hand. "I know you probably don't believe me, but there was a time when I felt the same way."
Abbey was about to ask how could she know before realising how stupid she had been. At one point in Tuula's life she had to face the fact she would never walk again. Sighing she sunk into the pillow "Its so difficult, how did you cope?"
Tuula took a deep breath and then started the story. "I was only a few years older than you are now when I had a terrible accident. I was devastated when they told me I might never walk again. Like you, I thought my life was over."
Abbey listened intensely "what happened?" She asked looking into Tuula's eyes.
"Eventually I had to make a choice. I could sit around and wish I were dead, or I could get on with my life. And since then, I've graduated from medical school, took on my first two assignments in Starfleet, picked up the harp again, and took on a leading role in a musical." She looked down at Abbey. "Maybe you're not ready to make that decision yet, but for now, just focus on getting better, okay?"
Abbey thought for a moment before giving a weak smile "I don't think I want to die" she finally said "I just wish that thing had been different or that there was some miracle cure to make me better" she looked to Tuula "I know this is none of my business but I have heard rumours" she blushed "about my dad and you" she didn't mean to change the conversation but as soon as she realised who her doctor was she was curious.
Tuula blushed slightly, glancing at Mott then back to her patient. "Your father is a wonderful man. For a jarhead, at least. He's kind, attractive, and chivalrous, and he's going to make some woman very happy one day." For a brief instant, Tuula stared off into space, pondering the possibilities. Her eyes snapped back to Abbey's. "But no. Those are just rumours."
It took him a moment but Olsam finally put two-and-two together and realized Lieutenant Wyatt was the "jarhead" Zuwtt had referenced. He tried to recall his photograph from the medical files, and it did seem like he had a vaguely jar-shaped head. Unfortunately, really, but what could one do about that? At any rate, Olsam made note of the information in his file and wondered if she wasn't referring to it as a rumor for his benefit.
Abbey smiled, "Well my dad's a difficult person and I know by the way you speak about him how he affects you. You see him a lot more than what you'd let on. Just know that if he hasn't shown that back its because he doesn't want to hurt you," she said in a soft harmonious tone.
"Oh, don't worry, he's not really my type anyways," replied Tuula, trying to avoid getting into a conversation with a restrained patient about her father's romantic activities. It was true, though there was something about Luke that stuck with her; he was different from most of the Marines she had met. "Now, If I undo these restraints, will you promise to lie down and relax?"
Olsam tucked his free hand into his coat pocket and grasped for the hypospray; one could only endure so much adolescent rebelliousness and thrashing about before it was time to break out the ambizine.
Abbey thought for a moment and looked between the doctors who looked ready to subdue her again and shook he head "I promise I wont run away but only if when I wake up we can, try walking?" She asked remembering how hard it was for her to get as far as the door without holding and knocking over everything that wasn't bolted down.
A skeptical expression appeared on Tuula's face. "I'd like to start out with some tests and some simple exercises you can do sitting or lying down first. Not to mention get your leg braces fitted properly." She paused, seeing Abbey's crestfallen expression. "But you know what? If we have time after that, we can try."
Abbey let out a small sigh before smiling only ever so slightly "Ok, thank you Doctor... Even if the rumours were not true my father would be lucky to have some as kind and patient as you" With that said she closed her eyes and yawned "I'd like to turn over now" She said nodding to the restraints.
Tuula blushed slightly at the compliment. "All right," she said as she loosened one of the straps around Abbey's wrist. "Just stay put, and be careful with that IV. And if you need anything, anything at all, just push the red button on your bed controls and a nurse will be right with you."
"I will, don't worry Doc!" She smiled "Do you usually fuss over your patients like this!" She teased looking at her with one eye open and couldn't help but notice her blush.
Olsam looked between the two, waiting for Abbey to make eye contact with him. When she did, one of his eyes seemed to grow larger than the other - giving him a crazed look - and he used two fingers to point at his eyes, then back at the young crewman to signal that he was watching her. Abbey looked like a runner, and runners you had to watch closely. Very, very closely.
His hand slipped back into his coat pocket again and reassuringly grasped the hypospray; one wrong move, and she'd be out like a light.
"Not always," said Tuula, as she undid one of the restraints. "Usually my patients are better behaved."
