Mission: Episode 03 - Frontier
Location: USS Galileo: Deck 2, Observation Lounge
Timeline: MD-02: 1400 hours

[ON]

Warrant Officer Eriksen arrived early. She glanced around the room and made a mental checklist in her head. The first order of business was the replicator. She replicated a pot of coffee and a pot of raktajino and set them in the middle of the observation lounge, followed by about a dozen standard issue coffee mugs. With that out of the way, she started to straighten the chairs and put them back in a neat, orderly fashion so that the ops crew could mess it all up as they saw fit once they arrived.

Juliet arrived about five minutes before she was supposed to. She'd spent the morning tending to half a dozen or more fix-it complaints all over the ship. She didn't mind; she loved fixing things. As much as she loved her job, though, the briefing came as an arguably needed break. She looked around the observation lounge, seeing only WO Eriksen and two pots of something. Coffee, probably. "Hello," she said as she took her seat, pushing her red hair behind her ears - her back to the windows. She wondered idly why Amril wasn't at his own briefing just yet.

"Good afternoon," Eriksen said.

Keval could be brash, flirty, and even over-confident, but he would never be accused of being a boy scout, nor would he ever be tardy.

He slipped in just behind CPO French. He was about to replicate himself some tea, but saw the pot of raktajino and opted for that instead. He added a little cream then sat down on the end of the table.

"Please help yourself to some coffee or raktajino," The boatswain said to Juliet, doing so herself. "I am not fond of that klingon stuff, but I am told it's popular." She took her mug and sat down beside the window.

Juliet wasn't in the mood for coffee. But, since everybody else was doing it, she poured herself a mug anyway while smiling appreciatively.

Tiffany came in, holding her toolbox in front of her, singing softly. It was a good day. Her shift was almost over and she'd managed to talk to a few people about the party for Jeremy. It was a Really, Really, Good Day. She saw the beverages on the table and frowned. "No donuts?" she asked. "Meetings always have to have donuts and coffee!" She traipsed to the replicator and ordered up a dozen assorted, to make sure to include old fashioned buttermilks - her favorites.

Holding her silence, only curling her hair around an index finger, Juliet noted the others coming in and talking. Darwisch found something to complain about, but that was nothing surprising. She fought herself to stop from rolling her eyes. Daydreaming, she was wondering whether she might have time to take a stroll in the arboretum tonight.

Janssen and Kilborne walked in together and went to join the others. They helped themselves to the newly replicated donuts and the coffee. Not far behind them, at precisely 1400 hours, the vorta operations officer walked in.

Mor'an never rushed anywhere unless she had to. Right now she had to. She wasn't quite sure how the time had gotten away from her (Del'an would have words if she knew her pupil was rushing about in such a fevered manner), but it had and now she was about to be late. When the doors of the observation deck slid open, she was relieved to see that they had not yet called the meeting. She took the first open seat she saw and closed her eyes to compose herself.

Amril spared the cadet a brief glance, but did not seem particularly bothered by her late appearance. "Good afternoon, everyone," he said, his usual smile accompanying him. His violet eyes cast a curious glance at the food and drink, then he moved to stand in front of the windows and face everyone. "Our next mission will have the department busy," he began, "But I believe, first, that it is high time I get to know all of you."

Keval smiled at that remark, as he wanted to get to know the department head better. Strictly platonically he told himself.

Tiffany poured herself more coffee. Whoever replicated it had made an excellent choice with the brew. It was Rich and Full Bodied and Perfectly Suited For Meetings and Donuts. Speaking of donuts, she felt she could have another, she had worked through most of lunch and was hoping to grab a quick bite before the meeting started but...well...there was always just so much to do! She liked keeping busy, especially lately, so she didn't have to be around her quarters and Crabby Tabby who was such a Big Fat Liar and Tiffany didn't want to have to deal with her anymore at all ever.

"Now then," Amril continued, "I have began reviewing your profiles and familiarizing myself with your skills and will be reorganizing the duty roster. If you have any concerns, you may voice them to me. I will expect everything that any Starfleet Operations officer would, and I intend to see that we are among the most productive and efficient operations departments in the Federation."

Keval raised his hand and waited to be recognized, "Sir I have no problems with becoming more efficient as an individual and as a team. How much exactly will the duty roster be changing?"

Amril gave a slight nod to show he understood the question. "It will change so as to optimize our productivity."

"If I am not speaking above my pay grade sir, could I ask you to elaborate? More specifically will you be playing to our strengths and specializations, or getting us to work on our weaknesses?"

"Uhm," Tiffany said, hesitantly raising her hand. "I'm sure that's all good and fascinating and we all would like to know. But, I'm more interested in what's going to happen with the upcoming survey. Are we going to get to go on away missions and stuff, cause that would be much more fun than discussing shift changes! I mean, wow! To think that maybe we could be the first people standing on a brand new world! It's so Aladdin!"

Juliet had to once again prevent herself from rolling her eyes at Tiffany's 'enthusiasm.' The Vorta was being unsurprisingly vague in his deliverance. He was being confident and forceful, though she had the impression that he was really quite lost. How could a Vorta have become fluent in Federation systems in about three weeks, anyway? People spent years at the Academy and then a lifetime in operations and still didn't know enough to be chief. She sipped her coffee, watching Keval grill the man with restrained amusement.

Amril did not seem bothered by the questions, he took a thoughtful moment to consider their concerns before offering his answer. He glanced at Keval and gave a nod. "I will be doing both, I suppose. I'm not familiar with your organizational methods, but mine will be workable within your system. As for missions, well, several departments will need help from operations, and we will need to organize all away missions and resources. If any of you have cross-training or merely interests in another field, you may have the opportunity to sign up with a survey team."

"Yes! That would be so nifty!" Tiffany muttered, smiling brightly. To think she may be one of the first humans to walk on a brand new world! She just couldn't believe it! Wow! How utterly cool to use one of Nesh's words! What a great new friend Nesh was! Teaching her all sorts of cool stuff!

Keval gave his boss an even smile, "I am always interested in trying new things. I'm most comfortable when I am tinkering with something, but I'm not JUST a tech, I would like to volunteer where ever I might be useful."

Juliet, since the beginning, since she had known her new chief, had been increasingly bothered by the way he spoke. My methods versus your methods. My being Dominion and your being Federation. They were supposed to be a team. They were all supposed to be familiar with the same methods of operations. But he wasn't. He was, for some reason, one of the highest ranking officers on the ship yet he had never gone to the Academy, and had never spoken to a human beyond those he might have killed. He was constantly reminding everyone that he had no experience with anything Starfleet, which was starting to drive her insane. He probably 'defected' out of convenience, she had always thought.

"I think, lieutenant," Juliet said, "Your methods are our methods and ours are yours," she said to him with as much confidence as she could find. "I believe we are all familiar with Starfleet organisation and protocols and that we should adhere to them." She pressed her lips together and, without realizing, started chewing their insides.

Tiffany rolled her eyes at Finch. Everyone knew she was only upset because she thought she should have been promoted and given the position, now they have a fascinating Vorta here to help with organization and operations. Tiffany wanted to hear more about away team missions and what she needed to do to get sent on a few. Especially ones with the command staff where Jeremy would be. Imagine! Seeing a whole new world with Jeremy! How romantic!

Jem'Hadar were much easier to work with. All these individuals... so disorganized. Then he reminded himself that he was an individual now as well. "I admit," Amril said to Juliet, "I do not know everything there is to know about Starfleet, but I am quite certain that I can integrate my talents in a way you might find unique." He wasn't quite sure that got his meaning across, so he paused to judge their reactions.

"Well then, that's Starfleet isn't it? I mean, we're all a bunch of different people all coming together to work together and Create a Better Galaxy, right? After all, this ship has Orions and Talarians and Vorta and, OH MY! doggies! We're all just a bunch of different people anyway, I mean I'm Terran but that doesn't make me the same as other Terrans who might be just a bunch of Crabby People Eating Sour Grapes and Rotten Tomatoes! So I think we should stop worrying about what makes us all different and find out how all that differences makes us a better crew! After all, the Federation was founding on the idea of People Working Together To Make the Galaxy Better!"

Juliet shifted in her chair, refusing to look at Tiffany. She had to remind herself that she wasn't in elementary school while she ground her tongue behind her lips. Amril's answer wasn't satisfactory to her, but she had said all that she needed. She was curious about the away missions; it would be exciting to the be one of the first people on an alien world.

Keval leaned back in his chair, both his antennae pointed slightly forward. This was proving to be a very interesting posting He didn't say anything more for the time being, he simply took in all the different conversations.

Tiffany took notes on the Chief's briefing so she could make sure to remember everything that was said, but mostly she was dreaming of away teams and new planets and adventure and excitement. And maybe a Romantic Picnic On Strange New World with Jeremy and Sidi.

"Ah, well," Amril continued after a decent pause, taking Tiffany's statements too seriously and trying to decipher them, "I will take that under... consideration. More importantly, I am passing on the information about the Galileo's mission objectives; Miss Eriksen has PADDs for you. You will each be assigned to certain specific mission objectives from science and other departments as needed. If that will be all, you are dismissed."
