Mission: Episode 15 - Emanation
Location: Avondale Shipyards
Timeline: MD 103 Time 1000

ON:

Surprisingly the medical facilities at the ship yard where quite expansive and very well equipped. Allyndra was not really surprised though if one thought about it. Building starships like any other large object there were bound to be accidents from the most minor to the most severe. It only made sense that there would be a facility handy to take care of the inevitable.

She had been given a small office space and a hastily made placard that simply read: 'Galileo Chief Medical Officer'. It would suffice for the new personnel and any returning ones to find her and get their medical out of the way before the ship was ready to board.

She checked her schedule and her first was not until 1000 hours which was almost that time. She stood and went to the office door to wait to see who might be 'looking a bit lost in space'.

Allyndra wouldn't be aware of this, but her 10 o'clock was not exactly the most punctual of people. Ergo, the fact that Rizil Chaya arrived ten minutes early would not be of particular note, but suffice it to say, she did, and it was. Her uniform was clean and freshly ironed, and she moved with confidence into the reception area. She held a small leather case in hand, which was what she brought to every medical appointment to ensure that synthesis and production of tepfarizine could be accomplished on each of her assignments. She didn't enjoy drawing attention to her history at Gallitep or Zyva, but considering there was no other way to contract Kalla-Nohra, let's just say it came up. Chaya checked in with the nurse and moved to sit in the waiting room, consulting her PADD so as not to be overly fidgety.

Allyndra waited and since no one showed she went back in the office and asked the clerk if anyone had shown up. "Yes ma'am, on Lieutenant Rizil Chaya is here. Arrived a bit early shall I send her on in?"

"No, I will come out there, thank you."

Allyndra stepped out of the office and made that odd rolling of the shoulders that sort of rustled the long iridescent wings and headed toward the waiting room. Why she felt tense she was not sure, like some wave was about to break that she could not see but she just shrugged it off.

She got to the door and it slid open and she said, "Lieutenant Rizil Chaya?" She did not have to move her eyes, just letting the movements over the facets catch which patient moved.

When she laid eyes on Allyndra, they widened marginally and she grinned, rising to her feet. "Yessir. Here for my physical." She approached the doctor and held out a hand, her demeanor warm and friendly. "Whew," she whistled, and made a show of glancing around. "This place is stocked. Must be a medical field day in here."

"It is not bad, better then most bases and ships except a medical one. Consider that building star ships many things can and do go wrong. Anyway," she took the hand," I am Allyndra illm Warraquim assigned to be the chief medical officer of the new Galileo and was the same position on the old one except there I was also second officer but that is more information than you need." She laughed a light but very musical laugh. "There is one thing though, I do not like too much formality unless necessary so please Allyndra is just fine." She let go of the hand and motioned. "This way, and if you have the time, perhaps before the actual scan we can talk a little. I like to get to know new people a bit better by just having a little conversation rather than the routine, cough, spit, scan thing."

"Don't sweat it," Chaya beamed, relaxing almost immediately. Formality never sat well with her, and she hopped-to, falling into step beside Allyndra. "I'm gathering the Galileo has been through some stuff in the last little while, how're you feeling about the change in position?" she wondered, nodding along with the doctor's final point. "Oh, and that's just fine with me. I never like to cough, spit and scan on the first date, anyway."

Allyndra looked at the Lieutenant and remarked, "Akkadians do not sweat, we pant to get rid of excess heat." She then continued, "Yes the old Galileo had a major disaster, we lost people but remarkably we managed to have many pull through the ordeal. Hopefully not to be repeated. As for not being second officer that was more a temporary assignment and Commander Blake is quite competent for that duty."

As they got to the office Allyndra indicated the replicator. "Have a refreshment if you wish." She took a seat and waited for the lieutenant get settled. "So tell me a bit about yourself if you do not mind."

Chaya beelined for the replicator and tapped in the code for a raktajino, black with barla root. She blew over the rim of the mug and leaned against the wall, her posture confident and at ease. "Well," she interrupted herself to take a sip of the coffee. Tell me about yourself was a fairly loaded question, so she turned it back on the medical officer. "What would you like to know? I'm an open book."

"Anything you wish to tell. How you came to Fleet, what you like to do, anything you wish to share. For example, I am Akkadian, from the House Warraquim and now Mother Named of that House. We have guild houses that we belong to. Warraquim means knowledge. We are an allied world but not a Federation member. As for myself, I like to cook haute cusine and play games that challenge the mind. I also like to water dance when there is the chance. Water dancing is using one's wings to hover so one's feet just touch water, preferably the ocean and then dance."

"That sounds incredible," the security officer enthused warmly. "I'd love to see that sometime. Well, ah, I'm Bajoran... mostly," she laughed, and following the general construction of Allyndra's statement, she added: "My given name is Chaya, which means life." She pronounced it khai-ya. "I like eating cuisine, if that counts. I'm a fairly active person. I like sports and games, too, and I try to brush up on the Orlineya when I have the opportunity."

"Ah, I had wondered with the ornament on your ear but never wise to make too many assumptions. You will have to forgive me though I am not used to what did you call it Orlineya?"

"It's the preeminent religious text on my planet," she smiled. "It's kind of the way I stay in touch with my culture, despite being light years away."

"Ah I see. There is so much to learn from others and it seems not enough time to do so. Well then, I usually ask if there is anything you would like to ask about me or my kind. We are fairly rare in the service and galaxy at large. Akkadia has had a policy of not allowing many travelers to the planet nor allowing very many off the planet."

Chaya nodded thoughtfully, crossing one leg over the other and leaning back, resting her hands on her knees. "That must have been difficult, you seem like someone who enjoys learning about new cultures. How'd you come to join Starfleet? How'd your family feel about that? I apologize if that's a little close to home, usually if you give me free reign to talk I'll be butting into your business in no time," Chaya laughed lightly.

"My Guild and the Council decided to send me off world. I was to report back on my experience so they could get a feel for the Federation and other worlds. The Guild is really one's family and one devotes one's loyalty to it. We have arranged marriages and any children become the responsibility of the entire guild. I have been married once but now am widowed. None of my children survived their time at sea." Allyndra found it was easier and easier to talk about that, those experiences were now almost a distant memory and bit of writing in book of the mind.

Chaya's lips pressed together sympathetically. "Losing your family is something that irrevocably changes you, I think. It doesn't matter how much time passes, or what joys you discover thereafter, it's still a scar on your soul. I hope some day you find peace."

"I have found a purpose and now my guild house is now all my children so what the gods took away they have in a way given back. Now then, I suppose we should get that scan done but feel free to ask or talk about anything you wish." Allyndra stood and made a small nod toward the main sickbay area.

"Purpose is good!" Chaya grinned and followed Allyndra back out into the primary medical station. She hopped up on the bio-bed, still clutching her leather case on her lap in both hands, looking around at everything as Allyndra got her equipment set up to begin. "So, I guess I should probably open with this," she winced a little, tapping her parcel. "I have Kalla-Nohra syndrome. It's characterized by pulmonary distress and fatigue, a little similar to asthma in Terrans. This is the medication I take for it, it's called tepfarizine. As long as I have this and my inhaler, I'm fine."

"Indeed, I have treated other cases before. So you were at the camp when the accident happened?" Allyndra asked.

Chaya nodded, her lips quirking once again in a reflexive smile. "That's correct, yes."

Allyndra nodded. She had to read up on that from previous case. The syndrome was technically a fatal one but for the fact that with the medication that had been mentioned managed to hold the respiratory failure at bay.

"As a security officer it would seem a little problematic to have make sure that the medication is handy. You cold end up on an away team and have things taken away. I think I have a solution though it might be a bit uncomfortable at first."

Chaya's eyebrows climbed higher and higher as Allyndra spoke, but she sat back in her chair, posture straightening as she kept her lips zipped and just nodded along, clearly holding back an initial, impulsive response. When the doctor was finished, Chaya cleared her throat and pressed her lips together. "All right, ah, uncomfortable in what manner?"

"I can implant a sub dermal osmotic pump which will slowly release the proper amount of medication. A lot of people though find the little lump it leaves to be annoying and itchy but you should get used to it after a bit of time. It will also need to be renewed periodically but should be better than having to carry around those medications."

Chaya's head tilted. "All right, that sounds feasible," she agreed. "A little discomfort isn't super daunting. Oh, OK, well, I take tepfarizine every day, but it's not really effective for acute attacks. I also have a PRN inhaler." She tapped the device. "This one's called mazezerol, it's a bronchodilator that uhhhhh... you know what, you probably... know already... I mean I totally know," she definitely did not know, "but you know... interest of efficiency and all that." She smiled brightly.

"Indeed, keep the inhaler with you. I am thinking of just what might happen if there is a loss. I think the pump will at least help keep you alive. Well then, shall we get a scan in and then I can put the pump in and I think you are free to go unless something unusual shows up."

"All right, perfect! Let's get 'er done," Chaya nodded, swinging her legs back and forth.

Allyndra chuckled in that odd musical way. "Very well, put your bag down and lay back we will get the scan done first and then put the pump in." She waited while the lieutenant got situated and started the scan and took notes and compared to last scan. After a moment she nodded, "Excellent things look well within your last medical, so officially you are signed off. Now I need you to remove your top and lay on your stomach please. Computer put privacy shielding in place."

[Acknowledged] came the reply from the computer and a set of fields shimmered into place. One could see out but the shields would block the view in.

Chaya unzipped her uniform and removed the outer jacket, folding it and setting it on the chair beside the biobed, and then removed the grey undershirt and finally the black tank top she wore underneath before following Allyndra's instructions and scooting forward to lie down, folding her hands under her chin. There were a not-insignificant amount of jagged, unnatural scars littering her visible skin, presumably souvenirs from the Cardassians. On her left arm, on the outer portion of her forearm, were two rows of uneven, faded, illegible script.

Allyndra got the materials ready and then turned back. "Alright I am going to disinfect and then numb the place." She worked on that area and then lightly pressed a hypo for a dermal anesthetic. Using her gloved hands she pressed and then took a sharp piece of metal and pressed. "Feel anything?"

"Mmmmmmmm, nope," Chaya reported cheerfully, craning back her head to check on Allyndra.

"Alright here we go," Allyndra said and used a special little instrument to place the pump under the skin. A quick dermal regeneration and it was done. It lasted probably all of thirty seconds. "All done you can sit up and get dressed."

"Fancy pants," she grinned and grabbed her tank top, trying to look over her shoulder to inspect her new hardware. "Do I need to do anything for it or am I good to go?"

"You are good and officially signed off. As far as the implant is concerned should be good for several months but as the medication gets low there is a small nerve stimulator which will give a sort of soft chime in your ears. If you experience any other discomfort, itching, fever or the like come see me immediately." Allyndra then made a small dip. "Welcome aboard lieutenant or rather welcome aboard when we have a ship. I will let you get fully dressed and you can leave when you are ready. The privacy screens will stay in place until you leave. A pleasure once again." Allyndra turned and left walking through the screen and heading toward the office.

"Oh.... kay, byeeee!" Chaya waved at Allyndra's back, eyebrows knitted together slightly before she shook her head and tugged on her uniform top.

Such a thoughtful introduction between these two characters. I'd love to read more about them exploring their beliefs with one another.
