Mission: Episode 15 - Emanation
Location: Rigel II - Temporary Offices
Timeline: MD 102, 0830 hrs

Aren stuffed a PADD into his bag before sealing it. He had just finished a walk through of the Galileo and was getting ready to conduct his only welcome aboard brief before boarding a transport to Earth. It hadn't been 24 hours since he had accepted the position as XO and already had a mountain of work to complete and not enough hours in the day. He couldn't help but smile as he set the duffel out of sight behind the desk and waited for his 0830 appointment.

Must not be late, must not be late, must not be late... annnnnnnd she was late. Chaya groaned and rolled her eyes as she consulted her chronometer. 0835! it blinked cheerfully. Mocking her. Her boot falls were heavy as she jogged down the corridors of the complex, and, somewhat harried, she ducked through the door of Aren Ban's temporary workspace a good minute later. Wincing, she pasted on a bright smile. "Sir," she snapped to attention.

Aren had just sat down when she had entered the room. He stood to meet her, a little disappointed and a tad frustrated at her tardiness. "At ease, and please have a seat." He said as he gestured to one of the available seats in from of his desk. He studied the the Lieutenant JG for a moment before speaking. "Lietutenant JG Rizil, I hope that your trip out here was uneventful?"

She couldn't help smiling at his correct usage of her name, and she sat down in one fluid motion, straight and proper. "Aye, sir. The Seine is a border patrol ship, but nothing we couldn't handle. Mostly I've been wrangling swihline and running fire drills up until the Galileo's arrival," her eyes crinkled.

Aren nodded. "I am glad to hear that." He said as he pulled out a PADD from his desk. While he had packed away all of his personal items he had prepared several for the Welcome Aboard brief. "First of all let me formally introduce my self, I am Commander Ban, Aren the Executive Officer of the new Galileo-A. As I am sure you are aware the Galileo-A is a new ship, and we are currently in the final preparations for her shakedown cruise." He said as he slide the PADD over to the Lieutenant JG. "Please make sure you go over the information in that PADD. It contains all relevant information pertaining to this command, shipboard life, expectations, and basic mission profile for the next few months." He briefed. "After we are done with this brief please make sure you meet with the Chief Medical Officer. We have been having some trouble syncing with Starfleet's medical database, so make sure to hand off your personal medical record to Medical. At this time, do you have any questions for me?"

"Did you write this?" Chaya said rather abruptly, glancing down at the PADD which essentially was a Newcomer's Guide to Galileo. Nifty. Her initial impression of Ban could be summed up in two words: he's overworked. He seemed nice enough, and he clearly had an eye for efficiency, which she could appreciate. "This is great, all right. Thank you, I'll consult it frequently. Where are we headed, exactly?" she asked, despite having just said she'd read the PADD, she clearly preferred to receive instructions verbally, and to just plain talk to people, some of whom found her overly social nature irritating.

"Yes I did. And it is expected that you will." He said, pausing for a moment to further answer the Lieutenants question. "At this time, and for for security reasons, we haven't released that information yet. Captain Saalm and I will brief everyone once the crew has been fully assembled and we are near our departure date. As per the staffing requirement for this posting, one of the missions that can be expected include long duration exploration.” The last bit he added as a gentle reminder as well as a small hint. "Do you have any other questions?" Aren liked to know the thoughts of his subordinates, and he could tell not just from her file, but also since the start of the conversation, Rizil would be someone whom would be willing to share them.

She tapped her chin. "What about the general crew? How would you describe the dynamic aboard?" this was clearly a professional inquiry, as she even seemed to straighten up as she asked, adopting a less casual tone of voice. "It's helpful for my job if I can get a sense of how things typically go, just as a baseline."

He looked thoughtful for a moment. "The general attitude, at least for the moment, is more of one of unfamiliarity. This is a new ship and a new crew. While some of the original crew of the Galileo are returning to man her, there are many whom are new here. I think it will take a little time for the crew to integrate enough for a 'baseline' to fully develop. But that doesn't mean that I don't have full confidence in you and the rest of the security department to handle anything that will come your way." Aren said.

Chaya smiled. "Gotcha. Well, in that case, everything-and-everyone else is just an adventure waiting to be found. I'll give this a read," she tapped the PADD against her knee, "do you have any questions for me?"

Since her late arrival into his office, Aren had been a little irked at her tardiness. But her last comment had caused a small but genuine smile to his cross his face. "That is supposed to be my line. But yes, I do have some questions for you." He said with a light chuckle before resuming his commanding presence. "As I mentioned earlier, the nature of this posting is for long duration exploration and research; with that in mind, I want to know what you hope to get out of this posting, especially as a security officer."

"Well, I've been a part of the status quo for some time, and relatively comfortable in my position. Over the past year or so I've become interested in taking on more responsibility and gaining more experience. A posting of such lengthy duration is the perfect way to build a rapport with one specific crew, while exposing myself to an environment that I'm not necessarily familiar with. I'm not a scientist by nature, but security isn't just about jackbooted thugs and phase rifles. It's important to be well-rounded, and I think the Galileo will provide that for me."

Aren nodded as he listened. Both in approval and in understanding of what she wanted to accomplish. "I can both appreciate and understand your intent. Having goals and benchmarks are important for Starfleet officers; as are growth and learning. Both should be continuous and on going." He said with a smile. "What can I do to help you accomplish your goal?" He asked.

"At the moment I'm just looking to establish myself amongst the crew and gain a sense of the type of atmosphere aboard the ship," she smiled. "As for right now, I'm just listening by ear, so to speak. I'll definitely let you know if anything specific comes up, however. I've learned not to make too solid of plans in regards to intent when first matriculating into a new crew; it helps people trust you better."

"I have an open door policy. If there is anything that you need, day or night please don't hesitate to ask or approach me. I may not always be able to respond immediately but I will do so as time permits." Aren said. He always wanted to make himself available to his subordinates, and he felt that it was important to make himself approachable.

"Have you had the opportunity to check in with either your department head their adjunct, that should be Lieutenant Commander Wyatt or Lieutenant Franklin?"

"I have yes," Chaya nodded. "Commander Wyatt was unavailable, but I spoke with Lieutenant Franklin. She seems to run a tight ship, I'm glad to work under her."

Aren nodded in agreement. "Franklin is a good officer, as is Lieutenant Commander Wyatt. I am sure that you will get along well with both." He said before checking the time. He blanched, realizing that he himself needed to get moving. "I do not mean to cut this meeting short, but I have a transport I need to catch back to Earth. I should be back within the week. Do you have any final questions or thoughts?" He asked.

Chaya stood and offered a bow of her head. "Not at this time, sir. Thank you for seeing me."

Aren nodded. "Very well. You are dismissed."
