Mission: Episode 08 - NIMBUS
Location: USS Galileo - Deck 3, Sickbay
Timeline: MD -01 - 1530 hrs

Bodies were everywhere in the holodeck's simulation of Cargo Bay 2, propped up against cargo containers, laid out between them, placed on makeshift cots, or lined in a row in the corner with blankets covering them completely. Mott had personally designed the trauma and triage scenario to test the medical staff's newly acquired emergency medicine skills; thus far, casualties had been light - mostly plasma burns and other wounds associated with starship combat - but now the pace was quickening as Klingon boarding parties began attacking the ship and engaging the crew in hand-to-hand combat.

The trauma teams - Dr. Wylde with Dr. Devin; Dr. Walker with Lieutenant McCarthy; and Dr. Shirley with Laeon - were split up and moving between patients while Olsam bounced from team to team, observing their assessments, offering suggestions, and participating when necessary. He was armed with a medical tricorder and a small hand-held device that controlled the speed of the simulation, allowing him to pause, slow or speed it up if necessary.

"Partial proximal-fibular amputation of the right forearm; superficial lacerations and contusions; significant blood loss reported from an epigastric stab wound; BP 103 over 51 and falling," Olsam said, reading from his medical tricorder in a clear but insistent tone as he stood over the patient. He cringed after looking at the stab wound and turned to Dr. Shirley and Laeon. "Looks like it was a rusty d'k tahg, huh? He's probably gonna die. Assessment?"

Laeon was wincing at the disturbing sight of the wound, pale as he shook his head slowly from side to side. He looked to the EMH with wide eyes, shaking his head urgently and holding his hands up. "I'm not a doctor....you fix it..."

The hologram sighed as the organic's emotions got the better of him. Thankfully her emotions were simply a projection of the real ones, and as such could be controlled with a mere modification to her operating software. After a moment she took the tricorder from her own waist and passed it over the patient.

"Multiple blood vessels have been perforated within the thorax, however the stomach itself has not been impacted. The liver on the other hand is a different story. Administer a tri-ox compound to improve oxygen circulation to the damaged tissues, use a vascular regenerator to repair the major blood vessels and prep for surgery for regeneration of the liver."

Laeon just stared at the hologram as if she were literally speaking gibberish, his eyebrows lifted as he set his hands on the small of his back. "I....can watch the readout?" he said lightly, feeling well and truly out of his depth.

"Don't be ridiculous," Olsam said, practically scowling at Laeon. He took him by the elbow, guided him to the patient, and then stayed looming at his side. "Tri-ox compound, in the hypospray there, with the blue label. Vascular regenerator, there. Monitor the regeneration rate with the medical tricorder." His face softened slightly and he gave Laeon a gentle shove at the elbow. "Get your hands dirty, Mr. Wylde. It's not like you can kill a hologram," he said, glancing at Shirley.

"The Bolian is right - this is a training exercise so treat it as such, we holograms are harder to kill unless you want to start shooting at the computer core."

The hologram picked up the hypospray and handed it to the young man before glancing at Mott. Whilst they had agreed to bury the photonic hatchet for the sake of this mission, she still didn't entirely trust him not to wander into the computer core in the dead of night, and as such she would be keeping an eye on those sensor logs especially.

"Here - inject into the carotid artery in the neck, it will speed the effectiveness of the tri-ox"

Laeon finally moved close to the bloody person, his body tense with it. The sight was unwelcome when it brought back unpleasant memories. He tried to concentrate on his instructions instead, to keep himself focussed. "Ca...ro....tid..." he murmured as he did a quick scan to make sure he knew where he was injecting before pressing the hypo firmly against the spot. "Done," he relayed when the tricorder beeped.

"Excellent. You didn't miss the artery - for an organic that is very impressive work indeed." The hologram replied with praise of the most photonic nature she could muster.

"Now...we need to repair the damage to the blood vessels. The vascular regenerator should be applied in a broad circular motion approximately five centimetres above the patient. Or again...as close to five centimetres as you can approxmiate."

Prudence was kneeling by another body, using the medical tricorder. Some of these had been set up as already deceased. She looked at Wylde and shook her head. "No life sign, death occurred over 18 minutes ago. Cause of death brain trauma. Should we try to resuscitate him?" Her instinct was to leave the dead man and work on the living, but there was a chance to bring him back.

Alexion shook his head with a frown, letting out a long breath. Holodeck training never felt right. It didn't have the same feel. But if nothing else, there was purely practical training and practice from it. "Not with trauma to the brain, and so many others who need treatment," he said quietly to her, so only she could hear before moving to another near by patient, a deep shade of blood pooled on the floor from the wound to the thigh, but the man was unconscious with it. "You get a reading and I'll start to patch," he nodded to Prudence, his sleeves already rolled up as he knelt close and leant down over the wound to see how deep it went.

Prudence nodded, smiling gently as she got a reading. "BP is low, organs are starting to shut down due to bloodloss. Should we get his body to produce more plasma?"

Alexion nodded quickly, rummaging through the medical kit even as he did so. "Give him a hypo to stimulate blood production and blood pressure," he caught hold of a couple of vials to load into the hypo, tossing them over to her neatly. "We'll get him some blood as soon as we can. For now, I will patch him enough to stop the bleeding. We can heal him fully later, but for now, it will do to stabalise him so we can move on to another patient," he assured firmly as he steralised the wound before taking the vascular regenerator to start the first layer of healing.

Dru was trying her hard not to panic and to keep focused, all she needed right now was a melt down infront of her boss and peers. Looking down in the patient in her hands, his body was 40% covered in burns ranging from first degree right up to thirrd degree. "We need to ignore the first degree burns for now. They can be fixed with a basic regenerator but we need to get the patient stable and treat the third degree burns."

"Agreed." Doctor Walker nodded, "I'll set up a IV and his vitals steadied if you'd like to make the detailed scan of the burns for nerve damage." he offered, gesturing to a few burns. "Some of these areas look like they might be worse than third degree. Maybe scan those extra close?"

Dru hesitated for a second, shaking her head, "Scanning would take too long....We need to simultaneously get the IV running and some...some..." Dru's forehead furrowed up as she tried to remember the medical name, "....some of the burns cream onto the worst of the burns to try delay damage."

"The scan can be set to run on its own." Ethan smiled patiently, hoping his calm would pass on Dru. "If you do the IV, I'll do the cream." he added, adding a friendly smile to the conversation. He wasn't sure if it was nerves or what but he felt wholly more confident with the cream with steady hands - a rough touch could make a painful situation even more so.

Dru felt her cheeks highlight slightly with a blush, the most basic knowledge of sickbay equipment and already she had failed. "I'm sorry..." Turning her back, she reached towards the nearby cart, quickly locating a bag of saline which she begun to connect to the patient.

As her hands followed the process of starting the injection of fluids into their patient, her eyes scanned the results being spit out by the bio bed. "I'm worried about his right leg...scans are indicating sixty percent of the surface area of the leg is covered with third degree burns."

"I see that too.." Ethan replied patiently, "That's where we'll focus first, but we need a steady foundation to do anything. He'll crash without fluids." he smiled up at her, smearing cream gently. "One step at a time, right?"

Dru forced herself to take a breath as she realised that she should be deferring to Ethan in this regard. She knew his file and as such knew that he had more medical training than her. Her hand moved to the IV controls as she ensured to regulate the flow of liquid so as to ensure that the patient's blood pressure wasn't worened by something within their control. "What else can I do?"

"Just keep steady." Ethan winked reassuringly, "We'll get through this together, and he'll come out juuust fine. Have faith."

Nurse Vipsania observed from afar, keeping the overall track of the different bodies out there. And that way, she could log the results from people too. It was nice to be part of this, it eased her longing for her daughter.

Looking across to Devin, Alexion lowered the tricorder with the results of their latest patient beeping through. They'd kept moving fast, a triage sweep of the patients laid out at their feet.

Alexion loaded a hypo before tossing it across to Prudence with a quick nod. "If you can stabilise him and see to that head injury, I'll get this knee snapped back into place."

Prudence nodded as she moved to the patient, smiling gently. "It'll be okay," she said, looking at the results before getting the hypo that would stabilise him. She touched his cheek, meeting his eyes. "Just follow my finger for a moment..." she said, watching the eyes move. "That's good."

The bloody man tried to follow with his eyes as much as he could but was clearly slow and out of it. "Did...did he say...did he say 'snap'?" he murmured, but having caught hold of that worrying word.

"Yes," Prudence said and smiled gently, taking a hypo. "This will help..." she pressed it against his neck before checking his headwound, frowning slightly as she inspected it. "But it will feel better afterwards, I promise..." she took his hand, holding it. "Hold onto me. Just watch my face...and breathe. I promise, it will be okay."

"It will hurt but let's let the painkiller work and it will be quick and easy," Alexion said with clear distraction as he waited to give it time to kick in, motioning to Vipsania. "Nurse? Can I borrow your hands?"

"Of course," Vipsania moved to his side, kneeling easily with a small smile. "Just let me know what you need of me, doctor, and I shall do it."

"Hold his thigh steady for me while Devin keeps him calm," Alexion murmured to her, nodding as he shifted to kneel closer in position. "Okay," he said in a louder voice, meant for the patient too. "Nice and still, the hypo will take the edge off..." he didn't count down, not believing it to be helpful in creating more tension that way. Instead, he took a firm grip on the lower leg and with a firm, calm tug he snapped the dislocated knee back. Moving his hands up to the knee, he felt the joint, having to use his thumbs to manipulate it to a better position.

Vipsania held the man's thigh still, watching Alexion work. He was skilled, she admired that. And that he did it by touch. "Good, doctor."

Prudence smiled gently to the man, holding his hands as she held his eyes. "That's the worst," she said firmly, nodding encouraging. "He's almost done now."

The patient was tense with the pain yet groggy with the drugs. He groaned, holding onto her hands. "Better bloody be..." he muttered through gritted teeth.

Moving the regenerator over the knee, Alexion healed some of the tissue around the joint to keep it supported, but he would need a session with one of the heavy duty regenerators with the biobeds to heal it completely. "This isn't fully healed," Alexion instructed him firmly, glancing up to the sweaty, tense man. "So you need to wait until you can be treated fully. It will take a while with this crowd," he glanced around, his hands finishing up the strapping around the knee as his eyes settled on Prudence. "How is his head?"

Prudence nodded, her eyes gentle as she moved to heal the headwound just enough to stop the bleeding. "He'll be okay, there is no internal bleeding, so he should recover. He can wait until later to be fully healed." She squeezed the man's arm before pulling back and standing.
