Mission Summary
Throughout the past 15 years, the Alpha and Beta quadrants have seen an increase in amiable relations between the Klingon Empire and United Federation of Planets. Once mortal enemies during the early days of the Federation, the two superpowers were the first to form an alliance against the threat of Dominion invasion in the early 2370s, and ever since, mutual trade and support operations between the two factions has reached an all-time high. The Hobus disaster in 2387 not only fractured the Romulan Star Empire, but served as a catalyst for even more increased cooperation between the two empires who both saw a need for increased security throughout the region in order to prevent Romulan separatists from expanding into nearby sovereign territory.
With a demand for increased security came the inevitable task of military expansion and deployment. Both Starfleet and the KDF control the two largest starship forces in the region, and the consistent development of new technology and implementation of new personnel required a platform from which to test new combat strategies, tactics and technology. One such platform was created in 2380 and was officially dubbed 'NIMBUS'. Ironically named after the "Planet of Galactic Peace", NIMBUS became a covert joint Starfleet-KDF military training exercise designed to allow both political powers to mutually engage in simulated combat against each other. The benefits of these joint exercises are many, but most importantly allow each faction to train their personnel and test new equipment and starship designs against live opponents with whom they are not familiar without incurring any loss of life or damage to assets.
The year is now 2390 and NIMBUS is about to begin its tenth annual operation. Starfleet has mobilized a small yet specialized task group at Starbase 84 along the Klingon-Federation border to participate in the exercises, and USS Galileo has been reassigned to Task Force 21 as its flagship to command the group and represent Starfleet interests. The operation itself will take place several light years from the Nimbus system in neutral territory, and is scheduled to commence in several days. Starfleet intelligence suggests the KDF may be testing a new cloaking device during these operations and also revealing a new Bird-of-Prey design, and to counter, Starfleet's Corps of Engineers has outfitted Galileo with a prototype secondary deflector array with enhanced electronic warfare capabilities.
NIMBUS is scheduled to begin in five days, and all eyes will be on the Chi'Dan sector where the games will take place. Starfleet expects a strong performance from their task group, and the KDF expects a complete victory for theirs.
