Mission: Episode 07 - Sojourn
Location: USS Galileo Deck 3: Sickbay
Timeline: MD 08: 1310 Hours

ON:

Another stop on the whirlwind tour of the USS Galileo was Sickbay, for the mandatory physical that Kal usually found tedious. He had all his working bits, he never knew exactly what they were trying to determine. Did his feet fall off on the ride from Earth to the starbase? That seemed unlikely. Probably didn't have any business being in space, if that was a problem. Still, this was a meeting with the Chief Medical Officer herself, and Kal had some ideas he figured to run by her, make the whole thing less of a boredom.

Of course, he'd also gotten lost on his way to Sickbay. He knew it was on Deck 3, and he'd tried to follow the map on his PADD, but he'd never been a map kind of guy. It gave him an idea to implant shipwide location systems on the map function of a PADD, so it'd give you turn-by-turn instructions on where to go. He wondered if offering that up would make him look like an idiot. Still, he found the goddamned shuttlebay before he found Sickbay. It didn't seem like that was even possible, but there it was.

He found Sickbay ten minutes late, and was directed right away towards the CMO by a nurse who looked suitably disappointed in him. He mumbled something about getting lost and headed in the direction she'd pointed him, to find the CMO.

Though the time was not her normal shift when Allyndra had perused the new coming aboard personnel she was intrigued to see that a Doctor Jang was a highly qualified nano-engineer. Thus she had made it a point to be here in sickbay for his check in. There was still that Borg business and perhaps he might have some insights. Maybe even a thought or two about the gene rejection. Well, she had thoughts about that and wanted to ask his opinion. Thus when she heard one of staff talking and directing with the office door open she got up.

A tall dark man presented was there and Allyndra noted the neat appearance and still vestiges of well toned body. "You must be Doctor Jang," Allyndra said from the doorway. "I am Allyndra please won't you come in."

Kal headed towards the CMO's office, stepping in with her. As the door shut behind him, he got a good luck at Allyndra, and it took him by surprise. He'd seen plenty of races on Earth during his time at the Academy, but never one like her. She was tall and slender, with pale skin and all sapphire eyes. Kal wasn't sure what species she belonged to. "It's good to meet you, Dr. Warraquim," he said, and it was true. He'd read some of the findings she'd published on the Borg nanotech she'd encountered earlier in the year, and found it fascinating. "I guess I'm here for my physical."

"Allyndra please. I do not like ranks, or titles much. Besides Akkadians do not really have surnames. Warraquim is my Guild House affiliation. Please have seat and the replicator is there if you would like anything. I couldn't help but see if I could talk to you a little if you can spare the time before we do your check in." She turned and took a seat and pulled up the medical file. Tapping the screen with one slim finger which was just a bit tender she said, "Anything special I should know about medically?"

"Nothing that unique," he said. "I'm Farian and Halanan, but not enough Halanan that I have their psychic abilities. Let's see, what else...a few broken bones, scars and stuff here and there. From back when I was a kid. Then there's a widening ass from doing nothing but lab work the last five years, but I think I'm otherwise in the clear." Kal couldn't restrain himself and finally asked, "What'd you want to talk about other than that?"

Allyndra nodded as he talked. The notes were all there but for the later and she only smiled about the ass part. "Well, as a nano scientist, there are two things that come to mind. I tried a little DNA directed nanomachine research to interfere with Borg nanite replication. It was not entirely successful, worked only if given within three hours of initial infection. Perhaps if it interests you, you could look to see what mistakes I might have made."

Kal frowned as he thought that over, and recognition dawned on him. "Lieutenant Warraquim, right? Right. I remember reading your findings on the Borg. It was of some interest back in the nanoengineering department. Really clever work. We'd known for a long time that the Borg used nanoprobes in the assimilation process but nobody ever really was able to get samples good enough for deeper analysis. I'd kill to look over your notes, of course."

"Thank you, I would welcome that." Allyndra smiled and nodded and made a note on the console to send the data over. She then turned back and said quietly, "Allyndra please. I prefer that to any titles or ranks. Not that it is a big deal but culturally Warraquim is my Guild House affiliation not really a surname. Now that aside, I have been thinking of using a quantum machine to help with some gene therapy but I am not sufficiently versed enough to control the decoherence. If you would not mind taking a look at the notes I have made maybe again some thoughts, ideas and or insights I would appreciate."

"I apologize," Kal said, wincing at his mistake. She'd already told him once to call her Allyndra. "Habit to go by rank. It won't happen again." That said, he thought about what she'd talked about. "I wonder if maybe the Borg could adapt to methods that might hinder assimilation. Your DNA solution might have been tried by one of the species they assimilated before. Either naturally-occurring, or the same type of medical science as you used. I'll send you my thoughts on your notes, soon. I was also wondering if I could ask your opinion on some of my work, as well?"

Allyndra raised an eyebrow. "But of course, but realize I am no expert in the field. I would find it an honour." She looked up at the chronograph and shook her head, "Well I should get you checked in, but thank you for your time, now then shall we head out to the sickbay proper and let's get the formality taken care of?"

"I guess if we have to," Kal said. "Just don't tell me I need to go on a diet. I don't think I could take the heartbreak."

Allyndra laughed, "You have not seen my Assistant Chief Medical Officer have you? Not that I am helping him lately by preparing French cuisine. Now then, your choice of three." Allyndra waved a hand. "Anything of particular note I should know about? Anything new since your last check up?"

"I don't think so." Kal frowned as he thought about it. His last few years had been extremely uneventful, all told. "Oh, wait, yeah. I injected myself with some machines a few months ago. Testing out how they reacted in the bloodstream to some light electrical shocks. Not a big deal. I think they're all flushed out."

Allyndra looked at Kal and frowned. "Using oneself for a test subject is not a particularly good idea. No adverse effects then I take it?"

"No," he said. "It was a low-level set of machines, injected in the hand. They were programmed to flush out afterwards. I recovered them to make sure." That was a story he didn't need to tell.

"Alright, lie back please and this should not take long," Allyndra went into professional mode and started the scan. She watched the readings and particularly looking to see if there was any residual. "Well, things look good, so you are..." She made a push on the PaDD she had, "certified for duty."

That was exactly what he wanted to hear. "Great. I appreciate it, Allyndra. I'll take a look at your notes, have my thoughts on them in a few days. I'm really excited to see your findings." He'd wanted to get his hands on Borg tech for a long time, but this would be the next best thing.

Allyndra finished the scan and nodded, "No nanites detected, you designed well. Your other medical parameters are within normal range so officially," she pressed on the PaDD, "you are cleared for duty and free to go." She put the PaDD down and nodded, "Again much appreciated and I do hope we can have further talks." Allyndra figured that it would be alright and extended a hand, "A pleasure to have gotten to meet you doctor."

"You, too, Allyndra," he said, taking her hand. Then he was gone again, excited to get along to work. The Borg problem would make for interesting reading over the course of the evening.

Allyndra nodded and watched as the new nanoengineer doctor left and she returned to her office.
