Personality & Traits

General Overview Kal is a brilliant scientist, and he knows it. He can be a cocky man when it comes to his work and his abilities. Having grown up poor in a bad neighborhood, Kal possesses a certain degree of insecurity when it comes to his work and his place in the scientific community. As a result, he can be defensive when challenged on his projects. Because of this, Kal has occasionally gotten poor performance reviews from his superiors, despite his intelligence and hard work. The chip he keeps on his shoulder from his childhood won't easily go away, and he has a tendency to think people who lived or grew up in the core worlds of the Federation had it easy. He genuinely likes people and tries to make friends wherever he goes, but he’s also got a somewhat prickly personality with the occasional bout of melancholy that can make him a bit of an exasperation to those close to him.

Kal possesses an innate sense of adventure, and he joined Starfleet in order to get the chance to travel everywhere he could. Not content to sit only in a lab, he jumps at the chance to get his boots on the ground and into the field. He's a big personality, who likes the company of people. He's got a big, easy smile and he's interested to learn things about people when he gets the chance.

When he's deep into his projects, Kal routinely loses sleep, preferring to work as long as his brain can keep him going, with a laser focus on what he's doing. He's addicted to coffee and has a serious sweet tooth. Because of this, Kal has to try to keep active to keep himself from becoming unhealthy.
Strengths Kal has a quick, inquisitive mind and a relentless curiosity that applies to a number of different subjects, including people. He enjoys spending time around people, and actively seeks out friends wherever he goes. Growing up in rough neighborhoods, Kal learned how to be a good brawler, but he's not a trained martial artist or naturally talented fighter. Where he grew up, if you got knocked down you didn’t stay down or you got your head kicked in, so he won’t quit a fight. Kal is an expert in his field, and his work on nanotechnology promises to lead to some important breakthroughs in the future. He's confident in his own skill and intelligence and isn't afraid to stand behind his own work, stubbornly so. Along with his expertise in nanotechnology, Kal has a personal interest in robotics.
Weaknesses Kal has a tendency towards defensiveness when challenged, sometimes even to the point of aggression back to whoever pushes him. This temper has been noted in more than one performance review. He sometimes chafes under close, direct authority and prefers to do his work unobstructed by bureaucracy or close oversight. His curiosity and thirst for adventure sometimes leads him to be flakier than might be good for his career, and his enthusiasm isn't always appreciated by his crewmates. When he gets very focused on his work, he has a tendency to ignore his own well-being as well as the people around him. As a result he can sometimes seem a bit callous or absent-minded. His confidence also leads to a certain amount of arrogance when it comes to his work. He frequently barely squeaks by the minimum marksmanship requirements for Starfleet.
Ambitions More than anything, Kal would like to revolutionize the world of science with his work in nanotechnology. He honestly believes that nanotechnology is the future and that he can change the world for the better. Apart from that, Kal wants to see as much of the universe as he can. He’s the type of guy that always wants to see what’s over the next hill.
Hobbies & Interests Besides his work on nanotechnology, Kal is interested in robotics and computer systems. He considers himself more of a mechanic and likes fixing things with his own two hands. He'll always have some kind of mechanical or computer problem on hand to tinker with. Kal has an unstoppable sweet tooth and can often be found with some sort of sweet on him. For exercise, he generally prefers swimming to anything else, whenever he can do it. Sometimes when he's stuck on a problem, swimming laps helps him to clear his head. His father raised him with an appreciation for literature, and he often reads a great deal, though he prefers crime stories or tales of intergalactic exploration and adventure. He also secretly self-publishes poetry under the pseudonym Solka Biim. It’s terrible.
Vernacular Kal has a very informal and jocular way of speaking, not one to stand much on formality in most situations.
Orientation Heterosexual
Language(s) Spoken Federation Standard, Farian, smatterings of Halanan and Orion

Personal History Kalos was born in Maltabra City on the coast of the Galldean Sea on Farius Prime. Like most of Farius, organized crime had a large presence on the impoverished city, and crime and corruption was a way of life. Kalos's mother Liada worked as an engineer at one of the spaceports, responsible for working on the shuttles and runabouts that landed in Maltabra, many of them bearing contraband of one kind or another. Kalos's father was a literature teacher at the local high school, and together the two of then did everything they could to keep Kalos and his older sister Bimi on the straight and narrow. Crime and gangs ran rampant in their city, and Kalos's parents struggled every single day just to keep their kids from being swept up in it all.

Even from a young age, Kalos was exceptionally bright, an endlessly curious and clever boy. His father impressed on him early the value of education and intelligence, and he displayed a passion and talent for machines, developing a hobby of tinkering with machines whenever he got the chance, taking everything apart to see what made them work. As he got older that intelligence made him a target. Eventually, he learned how to hide his cleverness under a facade of sarcasm and apathy. Some of his friends lived rough and Kal likewise started to fall in with a bad crowd, despite the best efforts of his parents. Bimi, his older sister, was already deep into a criminal lifestyle, and Kal followed her lead. He ran packages for gang members, ditched school when he was bored and got into frequent fights. His sister Bimi encouraged him along the way, and between that and the peer pressure at school, Kal's parents were unable to sway him away from that lifestyle.

That all changed when Kal was fifteen years old and his sister was twenty. Bimi had moved out of the house a year before and was working for a local gang, a branch of the Orion Syndicate, who had a huge amount of influence both in Maltabra as well as in Farius in general. His sister took part in the robbery of a shuttle belonging to a rival gang, although unbenknownst to her and her friends, that shuttle also belonged to the Orion Syndicate. The syndicate's response was swift and terrible, and Bimi was killed several days later, ostensibly by another of her friends, on orders of her own boss. Kal saw firsthand how heartbroken his parents were, and he was personally enraged at the betrayal of his sister, and also how the supposed brotherhood of the gangs was all a lie. He'd worshipped his sister for years, and for the first time he saw her life and his own life for what it was; brutal, empty and hypocritical. He wanted off Farius, he wanted a life out in the stars, to see something else besides his gray and oppressive world. He'd always been fascinated by the starships that frequently visited Farius, by the aliens who came and went, and wanted to see the universe, to know more than just what he knew now.

In his sophomore year of high school, Kal buckled down on his studies once again. His friends turned on him for getting out, and he had a lot more fights, but still he renewed his focus on getting out and seeing something else. There was a goal in mind and he pursued it, pushing aside everything else. He renewed his interest in working with machines, helping his mother sometimes in her repair business. Eventually, that interest spread into the field of nanotechnology, which Kal saw as the best field to get into to make a difference. When he was seventeen, he managed to build his own rudimentary isolinear computer system with nanotech processors for his senior project in science class. It was a rough project, not terribly sophisticated, but for somebody his age, it showed a great deal of raw talent. His teacher was extremely impressed and suggested he apply to the Daystrom Institute. Recognizing it was the best way to get off-planet, Kal jumped at the chance and managed to pass the entrance exams and was accepted into the Institute.

Leaving Farius for the first time in his life, Kal went to Utopia Planitia on Mars and started classes. Living so close to Earth and so deep in Federation space was a new, intimidating experience for Kal. He felt less like a scientist and more like a mechanic, and was sure he'd be found out as a fraud, as a thug that didn't belong. As a result, he covered up his insecurity with arrogance and aggression. The first year was hard on Kal, with few friends and several warnings from professors who didn't like the young man's attitude and demeanor. Kal almost left the Institute entirely until he met another student named Petra Lucas who convinced him to stay. She was his first steady girlfriend, and with her help, he managed to make more friends and ease into the Institute. His professors recognized his new focus and his quick mind and Kal excelled in his studies again.

Petra and Kal parted, as young couples often do, after two years and she graduated. Kal received a BS in Nanoengineering with a minor focus in Robotics at Daystrom a year after. He immediately pursued his doctorate and was awarded with a PhD in Nanoengineering when he was 27 years old.
Starfleet History Remembering his desires to see more of the universe, Kal applied to Starfleet, believing Starfleet to be on the ground floor of all the serious work he wanted to do. As much as he wanted to work in his chosen field, he also wanted to get out and see the universe. With his education, Kal managed to get put through the fast track in the Academy to complete it within two years instead of the standard four. Despite a problem with buckling under authority and struggling with close oversight, Kal’s focus never wavered from his desire for adventure, and he made it through the academy. Unfortunately, his first duty assignment wasn’t on a starship, as he requested, but was instead a nanotech research lab, located right back on the grounds of Starfleet Academy.

Work in the research lab was important, focusing initially on developing nanotechnology with a specialization towards medical applications, to speed up the healing process in more than three dozen different races. Eventually, Kal's interest in robotics and machinery led to his being assigned to help develop a new, more powerful nanotechnology defense system for the bio-neural circuitry which has been built into a number of Federation vessels. This circuitry is at increased risk of being infected with catastrophic system-wide viruses, which presented a serious security breach for their vessels. Kal was one of the lead scientists assigned to develop nanotechnology defense systems to ensure a separate antiviral backup to protect ship's computers.

Even though the work was important and interesting, Kal never forgot his desire to get on a starship and applied again and again to be placed on a ship. One year turned to two and two turned into three, and still he stayed in the research lab. Earth was so different from Farius that it made him feel more out of place every passing day. It was all so safe and secure, everybody wanted for nothing, he always felt reminded that he didn't belong. By the time he hit his third year in the research lab, he was starting to rethink his decision to join Starfleet. His work sustained him, but his SO could tell that he was getting more miserable every day. He made a promise to Kal that as soon as they hit a breakthrough, he'd personally push to get Kal on a ship. They hit that breakthrough a few months later and his request to serve in the fleet finally got pushed through with an assignment to the USS Galileo.
Medical History As a man with a past in a rough world, Kal’s medical history reflects long years spent fighting and getting into trouble. He’s had two concussions, several broken bones and lacerations. Ever since getting off Farius, he hasn’t had anything much more serious to report.
