Mission: Episode 06 - Legend of Souls
Location: USS Galileo - Deck 3, Sickbay
Timeline: MD 06 1300

[ON]

His time on Antichaus IV had been a harrowing attempt at tracking down a deadly and highly contagious microbe that attacked the nervous system. With the help of a lot of others, none having official ties with Starfleet due to the Prime Directive, they had managed to contain and eventually neutralize it.

His time there had given him pause as to whether or not he should actually become part of Starfleet or not. The whole issue with the Prime Directive bothered him. He knew the intent was good, but sometimes, letting an entire race die off, so as not to interfere with a world's evolution, did far more harm than good. But he had made a promise and his parents had taught him to never go back on his word.

His trip to Earth to meet with the Galileo had not helped ease his mind. An ion storm had delayed them long enough for him to miss the departure. He had, had to catch the next available transport.

Now he was on the Galileo. He stowed his gear in his new quarters noting that he would have a roommate. from what he could tell another guy. Then he decided to head to sickbay. It would destroy two shuttles with one phaser shot. He would meet his new boss and get his boarding physical.

He was wearing a pair of jeans and a short sleeved teal and maroon rugby shirt when he walked in.

In the old days Allyndra had been told it was called paperwork. That seemingly unending task of updating files and notes. It was sometimes enough to want to make her fly out the nearest airlock. She had pushed all the PaDDs aside and day dreamed right now of days on her home, the Twins shining warm on her wings. That was freedom, not these shackles of PaDDs that bound her to her desk.

The sound of the sickbay door opening interrupted her brief day dream and she frowned for a moment before getting up to see who it was. A man about her height with brown eyes and brown hair and definitely not in a fleet uniform stood there. That seemed slightly unusual and the words left her mouth before her mind clicked that this might be the new epidemiologist that she vaguely remembered seeing something about.

"Can I help you?"

"Yes," he said, flashing her a warm smile that would have made his mother happy. Almost involuntarily he brushed a few stray locks of hair that had fallen down onto his forehead, back where they belonged.

"Yes," he said, pulling out yet another PAaD for her to add to her collection. "I'm Doctor Chaparral. Sorry about the delay but my transport ran into a nasty storm and I missed the departure."

Allyndra took a moment to let the name engage with where she had heard it before and then the answer came. "Ah!" She exclaimed and stood. Allyndra took the chance and held out a hand. She knew that not all people liked personal touch but hoped she made the proper decision.

"You're our new epidemiologist! Welcome! I was reading not long ago when I got the message we had a new one on board about the outbreak on Antichus. "

"Yes, it was not a pretty picture there. I played a small part in bringing an end to the plague.I'm actually hoping to have less excitement here, but from some of the rumors I've heard that doesn't sound likely. Ghosts and goblins and things that go bump in the night from all the gossip."

Allyndra titled her head, "Yes but not sure the cause yet. It may not be anything infectious. I have not gotten any readings of anything nor medical scans revealed anything odd with any of the miners or crew. Your welcome of course to look at the logs I took so far."

"I'm brand new here, I'm not even Starfleet, I wouldn't begin to question your judgment. But if you don't mind, I would like to look at the logs, maybe examine some of the crew or miners.

I may not be able to get to the bottom of this either, but I'm not only an epidemiologist, but a pathologist as well. Plus my mother was in Intel. So maybe I could help out.

Of course the other alternative is it is supernatural."

Allyndra made a face at that last statement. "I do not believe in such things. All has an explanation. That label is just for something we do not completely understand the physics of in my opinion." She took a breath, she had her own thoughts on those physics but there was as yet no way to test or proof. She then continued getting herself back to a more pleasant state of demeanor and voice.

"Of course, your are most welcome to the logs and notes. I would appreciate it very much. I have my own theory but as yet untested and unproven and perhaps way too radical thus I would appreciate another mind. I think I am violating Occam's Razor."

"How is that?" Jonah asked., "What makes your hypothesis so complicated?"

Allyndra made a face as if she did not want to talk about it but she had mentioned it.
"It involves a transient causality based upon the fact that the universe in order to operate has to have a second time dimension which we normally do not experience." She did not explain further but only made that odd shrug which rattled her wings. "It is complicated physics and thus perhaps not the simplest explanation and hence violating Occam's razor. There maybe something much simpler which I am not seeing thus perhaps a fresh set of eyes and thoughts."

"So," Jonah said, his curiosity piqued, " are you suggesting an alternate dimension, similar to the Mirror Universe we hear the rumors about?"

"Not exactly. More like a way to manipulate those hidden dimensions. More say like a Q could do or others that have been recorded. Seemingly able to be here and there in a blink of an eye. It gets complicated for the equations indicate that once into a second time stream due to the chaotic nature that has to exist that if the control is not done correctly then one can get trapped there and only when the two time dimensions 'share' then make an impression on this reality."

"That is an interesting theory. I'm a doctor, not a physicist, but it makes sense to me. String theory and quantum physics. But it is as good a hypothesis as any other.

"But complicated and hence my worry it is not the simplest explanation. That is why I look to your expertise and maybe something simpler." Allyndra made a nod of her head. "Oh, and here I am taking you away from your check-ins. I do apologize."

"It's okay, being a civilian does have its advantages. I mean sure I have to abide by the regulations and all, but you're really the only one I report directly to, so I think under the circumstances you can cut me some slack and I can just start my official rotation tomorrow. That gives me time."

"Yes it does. Now then, I will get what I have to you and right now." Allyndra stood, "please follow me out to sickbay and let's get your official scan done." She waved a hand to the nearest one to the office. "Bed three there should be fine."

Allyndra waited and got a PaDD to make any notes. "Now then anything medically I should be aware of, anything that has changed since your last check up?"

"No, nothing has really changed and no health issues. I am a bit of a risk taker, I'm into extreme sports, so I have few old injuries; collarbone, ribs, boxer fracture, fibula, oh and a concussion. But they've all healed up nicely."

Anlya went through the PaDD and noted each one was already recorded. "Nothing since your last physical correct?"

"No, I've been pretty busy. Haven't had time for fun."

"Well then, let's get that baseline and take a look." She started the scan and then asked, "Extreme sport? I am not familiar with that kind of sport. What do you do that causes so many injuries? Is it Klingon in origin, they seem to like high injury prone sports?"

He smiled at her, "Well, I think the Klingons would be good at it, they have the personality, but it actually Terran in origin. Things like windsurfing, rock and ice climbing, hoverboarding, those kinds of things."

"Ah! I see something like our Storm Riding." Allyndra nodded and then explained, "One flies along the edge of a storm front, very exhilarating but very dangerous as well. Too far out no lift and one gets tired quickly, too close and one gets sucked into the turbulence."

"Yes very similar, I would think. Have you ever done in Storm Riding?"

"Once and I nearly lost my life doing it. It was thrilling for a bit but when things went wrong it was not quite so pleasant anymore. I take it you have had some close ones given your medical history and such things have not put you off on such sports?"

"Well I tend to be a risk taker. I've slowed down a little in my "old" age, but the risk is part of the thrill, so I haven't slowed down too much."

"I see, well these all looked healed enough. Some adhesions on that right shoulder that might limit some mobility. They could be taken care of but require some surgery."

"I have noticed some ongoing discomfort. How invasive would the surgery be?"

"Enough to put in one of my beds for a day and off duty for a week. I am guessing that just coming aboard I should not schedule anything yet." Allyndra replied with a little laugh.

"I could use a litle forced bed rest I suppose. When would you like to do this?"

"Perhaps if time allows another week? Of course that depends on the tribble infestation and the current problems down on the planet. Hopefully each will be resolved soon." Allyndra commented back and finished her notes and thought that each seemed to be presenting its own problems. "You are cleared for duty by the way."

"Thank you doctor," he replied,"i'll do my best to fit in around here. Try to lend a hand."

"I am sure you will. Oh and here..." Allyndra picked up a PaDD. "This is all the information I have from out initial scans of the mines."

Jonah took the PAaD from her with a slight nod of his head. "Thanks, I'll take good care of this and let you know if I find anything out of the ordinary."

Allyndra waved and then made her final medical notes. She would love to have another set of eyes on the data.
