"Once there was a young woman of a Great House. She was eager to make her mark in the House. After many months she taught a few students but she always felt in the shadow of the old Mother of the House. Students and others would go to her to learn rather than to her.

She fumed and then decided that if she could discredit the Mother the students would come to her instead. So she devised a plan to discredit the Mother in front of everyone.

The young woman would capture a manuku and then keep it behind her back. She would ask the Mother if the manuku was alive or dead. If the Mother said alive, she would snap its neck, if she said dead then she would set it free.

She was happy with her plan for it was to her mind foolproof and the Mother had no way to win the contest. That way she would prove the Mother was not as wise as everyone thought.

The next morning having capture a manuku she went to the gathering where the Mother was talking to the rest. The young woman waited until just the right moment and got the Mother’s attention while the rest of students were there.

“Mother,” she sadi, “I have in my hand a mnauku. Is it alive or dead?”

The Mother looked at the young woman that was serene but a bit sad and replied, “That my girl is entirely up to you.”

The young woman stood stunned and then let the manuku go and took a seat to learn wisdom from the Mother.
