Personal Log

Today I have attended a Senior Staff Meeting for the first time. Due to the leaving of one or possibly two personnel from the ship, I have just been given the role or position of Chief Flight Control Officer. Well, I should back up and say that I’m the lead Conn Officer on board. In either case, a lot has just fallen onto me that I was not mentally prepared for. I don’t mean to sound like I’m not prepared to do the task. I think I was more qualified that the other officers before they left, but that was just my opinion. So, what I’m getting at is that . . the full realization of this role is beginning to register. And I’m feeling a bit under pressure to perform and achieve before I’ve been asked to do anything.

On another vein of thought, this is not at all ‘how’ I wanted to achieve a position of responsibility. It’s almost like what I have read had taken place in the Romulan Empire. Well, before it was decimated. There, I’ve read, that officers moved up through coercion and manipulation. I certainly don’t want any of the crew of the Galileo to look upon me under that pervue. But with the lack of explanation of those crew members leaving, it’s very possible that some . . one might think cynical of me.

However, I’m not going to let any whimsical negative thoughts from others control this situation. I’m going to be the best Conn Officer this ship has ever seen! Oh, no. That’s not right. This is a new ship . . and I’m the first and only Lead Conn Officer. No, sadly, this is going to be an uphill battle for at least the first portion of this mission.

My understanding is that we will be traveling at high warp for many, many weeks. I’m going to have to focus on the training and cross training of the other conn officers and pilots on board. Hmmm. I wonder if they would be interested in looking at the initial stages of flight in an atmosphere and then those early pioneers into space travel. Ah, yes. A great idea. We could cross reference those initial histories from the Humans to the Vulcans and the Andorians, of course. And maybe even review the history of other species to see if there were any other unusual tales of first flight from their perspective?

Yes. I do think the first part of this mission is going to be quite enlightening.
