OLD:

Telana slowly approached and put a small plate and a glass of water next to Maria. “Here you are Maria.”

Sniffing the air a little when she caught the scent of something strange Mimi followed the scent to the small plate that Telana carried, she wasn’t sure what it was but it smelt like food.

“Are you hungry?” Maria asked, she picked the plate up and sat it on her lap. “I bet you are.” She took a small piece of the fish and ate it then offered the plate to Mimi.

NEW:

Mimi took the plate and smelled it’s strange contents, it was white and flaky but looked and smelled similar to what her and her family ate on Kemi. She took a piece off and took a bite, her eyes lit up when she found it tasted really nice and she quickly wolfed down the rest then gave the plate back to Maria. ”Diolch anda”

Maria took the plate back. “I would think that means “thank you”.” She handed the glass of water over and watched as Mimi again smelled its contents before sampling a little of it.

A few paces away Telana kept her medical tricorder on Mimi, based on her scans her physiology should take the food and water without any issues but it never hurt to get real time data as her stomach processed the food.

Watching the blue woman for a few moments Mimi glanced at Maria before pointing at Telana. “Doc-tor?”

Telana looked up from her tricorder and gave Mimi a reassuring smile.

Maria smiled too. “Yes, doctor Telana. She will help you get better.”

“Doc-tor Telna help Mimi?” Mimi asked.

“Yes that’s right, She is here to help you, I’m here to help you.” Maria was surprised that Mimi has picked up a few words as quickly as she had.

“Maria help Nekomi?” She looked up at Maria.

“Nekomi? Is that you, your species?” Maria asked, it didn’t sound like a name for a specific person but then she couldn’t be certain.

”Daai Nekomi,” Mimi said tapping her chest.
Maria sat on the very edge of the biobed carefully, not wanting to scare Mimi with sudden movement. She pointed to Mimi. “Mimi… Nekomi.” Then she pointed to herself. “Maria… Human.”

“Hu-man,” Mimi repeated, she looked across at the two doctors nearby. “Joy, hu-man, Telna nyasi hu-man?”

“Nyasi… possibly “not”.” Maria smiled. “Very good! Doctor Telana is nyasi human. Doctor Telana is Andorian. You’re doing very good, Mimi.”

Mimi smiled.

“What happened to the Nekomi?” Maria asked, she knew what had happened but wanted to hear it from Mimi, she may have more information than they did.

”Dranc tuli tik dupris zeru,” Mimi said the smile disappearing, she saw the blank expression on Maria’s face and thought how to try and explain it without using words. She raised her hands up above her head then started to repeatedly slam them down into the fabric of the biobed and tried to mimic the sounds of the explosions that had tore the colony apart.

“You were attacked, from the sky?” Maria asked raising her hand up in a similar motion to what Mimi did.

“Sky Klingons dranc Nekomi.”

“Dranc could mean hurt or kill,” Maria said aiming her comment at Telana. “Or hunt..”

“I think kill is more likely,” Telana replied. “You say you didn’t find any other survivors or many bodies down there?”

”Teki anda makita mas Nekomi?” Mimi asked.

Maria shook her head. “Only the bodies around the shuttle.” She looked at Mimi with a puzzled expression. “I wish the translator was faster. I didn’t catch any of that.”

“I wish it would work at all, her language must be very complex if it is taking this long.” Telana remarked.

Sensing they could not figure out what she had just said Mimi looked for something to help, the bag found with her when she was rescued lay nearby. Slowly easing herself off the biobed she went to fetch it.

“Oh! Hey! Mimi!” Maria was surprised at, even in her current condition, Mimi felt okay enough to get up and apparently get her bag. Maria watched curiously.

Getting the bag Mimi went back to the biobed, she rifled through it till she found what she wanted and handed it to Maria.

Maria took the offered item and looked closely at it. It was a photograph. In the photograph were four of Mimi’s people, possibly her family. One of the Nekomi’s was obviously Mimi, one was another Nekomi female with much lighter fur, that appeared to be about the same age as Mimi. The last two were male and female and looked much older, potentially parents. Maria turned the photo back toward Mimi. “Is this your family? Mimi’s family?”

She took the photo and held it close before holding it out and tapping intently at it.

“Oh…” Maria said as the realization slowly sunk in what Mimi was asking of her. She shook her head slowly. “No, Mimi. I did not see your family. I did not see many of your people at all though. Maybe… Mimi… was your colony large or small?” She sort of pantomimed what she was trying to say, making a sort of “group” gesture around in a circle and then used her hands to show a large space and then a small space. With very few bodies it was hard to take count of the expected population.

Mimi cocked her head to the side as Maria tried to explain, she didn’t understand the gestures but if shaking the head meant the same for humans as it did for Nekomi she understood that. "Saya hashall son franc?" she asked, a small tear formed at the corner of her eye

“Oh, Mimi. I’m so sorry.” Maria wished she had more information. There was no way that they could ever know if Mimi’s family was killed, taken hostage, or had managed to run away from the colony and hide. She carefully reached over and gently patted Mimi’s shoulder in support.

That small tear quickly grew and was followed by many more as Mimi started to cry as the realisation that she’d lost everyone swept over her.

“Oh no… I’m so sorry.” Maria decided that everything had been okay so far so a hug wouldn’t hurt anyone and made an attempt to scoot closer to Mimi and hug her.

The hug was unexpected but Mimi quickly wrapped her arms around Maria and held her tight crying into her shoulder.

Maria smiled a little at the welcome reception and held Mimi while she cried, petting her hair and ears gently. “You shouldn’t totally give up hope. I know you don’t understand me, but you never know. Someday you might find them.”

”Diolch anda Maria,” Mimi managed to say despite crying hard, Maria stroking her fur made her feel better, her mother did it all the time whenever she was sad.

“It’s going to be okay. I know it doesn’t feel like it right now, but it will be…” Maria said in soothing tones. “You can stay here for now. Everything will be fine.” Maria continued to pet Mimi gently, stroking her cat-like ears, which were surprisingly soft.

Gradually Mimi got her crying under control and after wiping her eyes she let go of Maria and managed a small smile.

Maria continued to pet Mimi a little longer before she got up and retrieved and offered Mimi something to wipe her face with. “Would you like some more to drink?” she asked softly, picking up Mimi’s cup from earlier and pretending to drink from it.

”Daai,” Mimi said nodding her head.

Maria took the cup to the replicator and returned with a cup of cold water, offering it to Mimi. She turned to the doctor. “Do you know what they will do with her?” she asked. “It’s not like we can really send her back to the colony.” Maria was concerned about what would happen to Mimi next.

Taking the cup Mimi took several sips

“I am not sure.” Telana replied. “If we can’t find anymore of her people on the planet or any translatable information that can tell us where her people are we might have to give her to someone to care for.”

Maria frowned. “Well, at least for now she’s safe.”

“Safest place she could be right now,” Telana remarked. She stepped up and put a reassuring hand on Mimi’s shoulder. “She needs to rest now, she aggravated her leg a little when she got up.”

Maria nodded. “I should probably get back to my duties, but please let me know how she’s doing. I’ll come back at the end of my shift to check on her.” Maria returned to Mimi’s bedside. “I should go back and you should sleep…”

“Sleep…” Mimi repeated.

Maria nodded. “That’s right… you should sleep.” She picked up the edge of the blanket to suggest that Mimi should crawl under it.

Mimi looked at Maria then down at the blanket and back up. ”Loaren.”

“Does… that mean… sleep?” Maria asked. “Um… Daai loaren?” She was guessing a little at the words.

”Li akan loaren,” Mimi replied, she shifted from sitting down to laying on the biobed.

Maria smiled and covered Mimi with the blanket. Gently, she went and tucked the blanket around Mimi and then sat for a moment to pet her head. “Sleep well, little one.”

Telana packed her tricorder away and left Mimi and Maria alone for a little. Eventually Mimi fell asleep and she quietly rejoined them. “You handled that very well Maria,” she told her.

“Thank you. I just wish I could take her back to her family,” Maria said softly, moving away from the biobed carefully, trying not to wake Mimi.

“Commander Kal sent us a message while you were with Mimi, we sent a few more away teams down to do some more searching but just like yours they didn’t find anymore survivors, only bodies,” Telana said.

Maria shook her head. “I’m afraid they’re more than likely dead.” She sighed and looked over at the sleeping Nekomi. “I dunno… I just wish I could help more.”
