"Once a long time ago an old Mother of House Warraquim needed to choose a successor but was unable to decide between many of the House so she thought and called the House together.

Once the group was assembled she said: 'As you know I love flowers, beautiful things that bloom and bring joy to our hearts. Thus, each of you I will give a seed and in one year the one with the best, most beautiful flower will become my successor.'

Thus the old Mother handed out a single seed to each person that was assembled there and off they went to tend their seed.

One girl name Haunani took her seed home and planted it in a beautiful blue pot that her mother had made with her own hands. She tended it night and day, watering, sunning, fertilizing. However, nothing sprouted from the soil. She went to the Blood flower farmers and asked and received all sorts of advice but no matter what she did nothing sprouted.

A year passed and she was not going to return as the beautiful blue pot remained as empty as the day she had planted the seed. However, her parents told her to return and tell the Mother of the House how she had at least tried.

Hauani returned with her barren pot and in the gathering marveled at all the wonderful flowers that spilled in glorious array from all the others pots.

Finally the old Mother went through the crowd and smelled and commented on all the lovely flowers that each had brought until she got to Hauani.
"Child where is your flower?" she asked.

Hauani made a formal curtsy and said, "Mother I have tried all year but I could not get my seed to grow. I have failed in my task."

The old Mother took Hauani by the chin and said, "Stand child for you will be my successor."

Hauani was stunned not knowing what to make of this.

"You see child, I boiled all the seeds before I gave them out and only you have had the courage and wisdom to tell me that yours did not grow."
