Asking for an Interview

523 words; about a 3 minute read

LuAnn sat at the computer console and looked over her most recent resume. It showed all her various jobs as a counselor, both in and out of Starfleet. She hoped it would show her prospective Captain that she was willing to work outside of the box and to be creative and different. Different to her was always a good thing.

One more polish, and it was ready. Now for the letter.

Dear Nameless Captain,

My name is LuAnn Lovegood and I am a counselor who works in Starfleet but is not currently a member of Starfleet. As you can see by my attached resume, I have been a member of Starfleet, but I feel that I am better suited to working with Starfleet personnel as a civilian. Why may you ask? I will tell you. Because it allows me to be more creative and unorthodox. While I have to follow the rules of my profession, I do not have to follow regulations. I can prescribe what I feel is best for my clients.

I love nature, and I feel that getting close to nature is important to overall health. I often tell my clients to take long walks in the woods or on the beach. If they're particularly stressed, I recommend skinny dipping by moonlight. It's amazingly calming. You should try it some time. Getting back to nature is especially important on a starship. Holodecks are nice enough--much better than not having anything--but they are not the same as being around real trees. Did you know that trees talk? Not like you and I do, but they have their own way of communicating. They have souls. Spend some time alone in the woods on a planet or in the arboretum. Alone is best. Listen carefully and see how it feels. Then go onto a holodeck and try it. You'll feel the difference. Just like a holographic person is not the same as a real person, a holographic tree is not the same as a real tree.

There are over a thousand worlds in the Federation. The beings from these worlds are all different. Sometimes you need someone who is willing to try something different and unique to help someone, to reach someone. That's what I will bring to your ship. I'll bring something different that may work for the non-traditional crew member.

You should invite me to come for an interview. We can talk over tea. I love tea. So many worlds have interesting flavors of tea and sweets. You can spend a lifetime sampling all the varieties. I also like sangria. But I don't recommend it for when you're on duty or doing interviews.

Oh, and I should also mention that Tuula suggested I apply for your ship. She was walking your targ. I love unusual pets. They're amazing, aren't they? And the looks people give you are priceless. I used to have a pet skunk.

I look forward to an interview. I'm already here on Regula, so I can come any time.

I await your response, and I hope you take some time to listen to the trees.

LuAnn Lovegood
Counselor
