"Huh," Kohl vocalized to no one but himself. It was a sound of curiosity, of interest being piqued. "Another one," he said under his breath. Standing alone in the medical laboratory, Ensign Andreus Kohl was studying the storage compartment in the back corner. The compartment was open wide and Kohl was counting hypospray cartridges on the shelves, pointing at each of them in turn. He lifted a PADD from where he had left it and he made a couple of notes on the display. Kohl closed the storage compartment and locked it, before he followed the short corridor to Sickbay's intensive care unit.
Walking down the passageway on Deck 4 with a PADD under his left arm and looking at another, Theron stopped abruptly as some equipment was being moved down the passageway. He looked right and left to make sure there that he would not be trampled before continuing on. "It seems that there is more to do now that we have landed than before." he said to himself. He had to stop again for replacement console was being moved past him. He continued on. He had seen the repair schedule. There were so many repairs taking place, he was not sure if anyone would get shore leave at this rate.
He finally turned into the Sickbay and stopped dead in his tracks. It looked like the entire sickbay had been disassembled with many panels open and equipment off the wall and on the floor. He had to remain focused and walked over to Ens. Kohl. "Ensign Kohl." sounding just a bit more frustrated that he had desired. "What is this about supplies missing?"
Kohl blinked at Theron a couple of times. He couldn't think of what to say, at first. Kohl just stared at Theron. The security officer was as tall as Kohl, his features were also fair, but his build was evidently more muscular than Kohl's own. It wasn't anything physical that had caught Kohl off guard, though, it had been that tone of voice. For a split-second, Kohl pondered if it had been a mistake to include the Security department at all, but he didn't let that thought show.
"We've been conducting an inventory of the controlled substances in Sickbay's stores," Kohl said in answer to Theron's question. Kohl made every effort to come across as amicable, and he smiled, because Theron was a newly-promoted member of the crew. Perhaps they would work together for years to come, Kohl supposed. Amicable would be best. "I compared the medical logs and the damage reports against the physical count, and it doesn't match. There are supplies missing," Kohl said earnestly. "Drugs."
Rhodes thought through the situation before jumping to conclusions. He had no experience with medications and there was no reason to act like he did, "Do you have a listing of the items believed to be absent without reason?"
Kohl held his PADD up to chest level and then he flipped it to point the display at Theron. Nodding to answer Theron's question, Kohl said, "That's anything coloured in amber." Kohl handed over the PADD.
Accepting the PADD the security officer asked, "Were all these items in one storage cabinet or multiple locations?"
"There are medicines missing from all over the Sickbay facility. I've got storage locations included on that list," Kohl replied, but there was a hesitancy underlying his timbre. His smile tightened awkwardly. "But we weren't exactly putting our supplies back where we found them when the Klingons were bashing down our door, or the cupboards were knocked down by the landing. Whatever cupboard had a lock was good enough," Kohl said.
"I understand." Rhodes replied and further asked, "Are all of these items . . items that could be used intoxicating use, or are their others as well?"
Kohl stared at Theron with a look that seemed to say, That's a good question. Unfortunately, Kohl's mind drew a blank and he could only murmur, "Uhm..." Abruptly, Kohl took back the PADD from Theron without asking. He swiped a finger across the display to scroll through the inventory list. "Terakine, Ambizine, and Formazine all have narcotic effects in the right dosages," Kohl replied. "Metrazene does not, as far as I know."
Theron looked thoughtfully, trying to make sense of the situation. It was possible there was no sense to it all. Looking at Ens. Kohl, "Is there any kind of tracking on the containers or any type of isotope that can be scanned for to try to locate them within the ship?"
"No," Kohl said, and he elongated the vowel with some enthusiasm. It was a good idea, Kohl thought. It would make this easier. "Maybe on a starbase," Kohl said, "But on a Nova class we shouldn't ever have civilians unattended in Sickbay."
Theron did not say anything for a long moment, looking down at the PADD of information that had been returned to him. He then looked up canting his head slightly to the right. "This is my recommendations and 'official instructions'. Make an official report about the items confirmed missing and not used, their official location, and then a request for replacement. We do not have enough information to do an investigation on any individual." He paused a moment making a couple notes on the PADD, "I will have our teams monitor all containers removed from the ship with an eye for these items in particular."
"Understood," Kohl said. He nodded, while he mentally repeated the instructions to himself and constructed a mnemonic device to remember the instructions until he could share them with Doctor Ni Dhuinn. "I can do that."
Theron then took on a persona of professionalism and confidence, in the hope of encouraging the medical officer. "Thank you for letting me know about the incident. Let me know of any other related situations."
"Yeah. I mean, yes, I will, uhm," Kohl said, and then steamrolled a segue from one topic to the next, "Do you know... Are we going to be able to visit Vega Colony?"
Theron grimaced a little looking to the side in thought, "Well, I hope to." Looking back at Kohl, "Ens. Cho and I are planning to get away to look at the natural wonders on the continent."
"Oh, I know hardly anything about Vega Colony," Kohl said, his voice expressing his intrigue with the notion of natural wonders. He shifted his weight and began to talk with his hands, now that he wasn't making a formal report. Kohl asked, "What's the terrain supposed to be like?"
Theron relaxed a little, seeing that Kohl just wanted to chat. "The area I am looking at is to the west of here; a hilly jungle area, but there is a large open grass area in the middle. I understand there was a great battle with the Romulans. I do not have the detail. I plan to do some reading up on it prior to being transported to the area."
"Oh, it's the site of a battle! That should be historically fascinating. I'd only heard about the big city itself. I wonder what else is out there," Kohl said, and his surprise was showing. "I didn't know Ensign Cho would have been interested in great Romulan battles."
"Well . . I do not think she really is." Theron replied then hesitated and added. "I think she just did not want to be by herself."
"She must enjoy your company quite a lot," Kohl grinningly remarked, "If you convinced her to step away from her sensors to visit a battle site."
Theron was not sure how to respond. He definitely did not was to misrepresent Kiri's friendship. "I am just trying to help her be more comfortable to come out of that shell she has been living in."
"That's great," Kohl said, a tight smile on his lips. "That's what I mean. It sounds like it's working. We've all earned a good bit of shore leave."
Theron slightly changed the subject when he said, "She does not know who to trust or even if she can trust herself. I am hoping this experience will provide something for her."
Kohl nodded at Theron's concerns for Kiri; they were similar to concerns he had felt as well. At Theron's words, Kohl spoke softly and he said, "What do you hope she will get out of it?"
Theron was stopped by the question, looked to Kohl, pursed his lips and thought for a moment. "I guess I am hoping for her to have experiences and where she still feels safe." He smiled slightly, "I see a lot of creativity and possibilities in her. I hope one day she will share them with the rest of us."
"I hope so too," Kohl said, and he nodded his agreement.
"Well," Theron finally said, "If there is nothing else . . ."
"Of course," Kohl said in the formal timbre of his voice. He took a step back and nodded. "Don't let me keep you," he said.
"Keep me informed." Rhodes said as he stepped away.
