Mission: Episode 12 - Recluse
Location: USS Galileo: Sickbay
Timeline: MD01 time 1000

ON:

Eviess had been off for the last few days as she'd come onto the ship before her leave had officially ended. She was just going to start her duties tomorrow so she figured she better get her check up today. She walked into the sickbay in her long sleeveless dress. I was a gift from her parents a Klingon style dress with Romulan flair to reflect the dual heritage.

She stood outside the CMO's office and rang the chime.

"Enter," Allyndra said. She was reading her book and going over some things in her mind. Charts and all had all been caught up and she was now just filling in time.

Eviess entered and placed her medical bag on the floor, she always carried it. "Doctor Eviess daughter of Eyelaya reporting for pre duty medical. I'm your new Gamma doctor." She stood upright and straight.

Allyndra looked up and tilted her head. Klingon heritage in there but she was uncertain what the rest was perhaps a hint of Vulcan or similar. She nodded and waved to the seat. "Please have something from the replicator, have a seat and in my sickbay I prefer first names so if you do not mind Allyndra and..." She tried to remember Klingon protocol since the woman had used a Klingon form. "Eviss if I have the protocol correct. If I do not please forgive me for my lack of knowledge."

"Eviess." She said sitting down, "I think I'm suppose to add daughter of Eyelaya for the Klingon side to be satisfied and then there is the family clan thing for the Romulan side." She thought a moment on the rest of what Allyndra had said. "First names are fine. I'm not much for tradition." She waited. She let a small smile play across her lips. Her quiet calm was beginning to come out. She sat there looking peaceful and content.

"Excellent," Allyndra nodded. "I suppose for full formality which I do not like since I grew up with enough of it, is that I am Allyndra of the House of Knowledge and Guild Mother of such." She shook her head. "There, now you see why Allyndra is so much easier. Now then Eviess, I kind of like to know about you, your background and such. It is hard to suddenly get tossed into a new environment and hardly know a single other person."

"I was born and raised on Vulcan I tried the Academy, that is the prep courses but didn't like it so I went to a Joint fleet and civilian medical academy and worked on Lunar colony for most my life. I was emergency and triage doctor there and had my own family practice and I have been trained in physiotherapy. An Admiral I was treating suggested I enlist and I did. This is the second ship I have served on." She said. She shrugged on the last comment. "It's always difficult but a doctor is a doctor no matter what the environment."

"How do you find the difference between having your own 'single' I believe they call it and being basically an on call doctor?"

"Not much difference." She smiled. "I was always on call even in private practice. All my patients could reach me all day and all night and I made house calls. My patients are priority for me. Although there are issues on Starships that are not as easy to get used to."

"The formality can be a problem at times, but then if you have been on a ship before, you know that when we get an emergency it tends to be a big one. Now looking over, it seems that you did quite a bit of family practice. That is good, we have even for a ship this size a few younglings aboard. A few pregnancies as well. If you do not mind, I think I am going to route those cases to you."

"Not in the least I actually have something that I invented that might help." She stood and walked over to her med bag and came back with it. She sat down and opened the bag. She pulled out what looked like a rubber ducky and passed it to Allyndra. As soon as Allyndra touched it the eyes began to glow and there was music and a quacking sound.

The thing somewhat surprised her and then she knitted her eyebrows. "What is this for?"

"It's a toy sensor. I designed it to test the child's reflexes temperature, coordination, blood pressure, heart rate, and to a scan for over all health. The duck is played with and then I substitute it with a toy while the tricorder takes the readings and adds it to the file of the child."

Allydnra listened and then as the explanation came she looked at it with much more respect. "Very clever and excellent idea in fact. You should write about it for a medical journal for I cannot remember seeing anything like this described for pediatric use."

Eviess smiled. "It's just something I worked up. My brother is an engineer so he showed me a few things and I just basically took apart a tricorder and made some improvements." She shrugged. "It still in the testing phase but so far it's worked wonders." She put it back in her purple medical bag. "So, my exam." She slipped a PADD towards Allyndra. "These are my medical records." She was pretty healthy.

Allyndra took them and looked at them quickly. There was nothing that jumped out at her and since the woman was a doctor she would extend the professional courtesy. "Very good. I think we can forgo the scan. If you would you can get your own DNA sample when you have the time." Allyndra looked at Eviess and added, "I trust my medical personal to know themselves, a professional courtesy."

Eviess smiled. "Very well. I will do so now. Do you have a DNA swab?" She liked that the doctor trusted her staff but part of her waited for the test. She knew it was coming. The last CMO too had wanted to watch her work.

"Well of course, and it is a good way to let me show you around our little sickbay," Allyndra said standing. "We have a lot crammed into the small space but we are well equipped. Oh," as almost an after thought, "during your shift, this is your office to use. We all share it so feel free to put your own touches if you wish though please not quite like Tuula did."

Eviess smiled. "It is good of you to share your office." She said. "Not many would. Tuula...she is roommates with my friend Splendora. I have heard much about her." She followed Allyndra out to sickbay. "I do not have much to put in the office. I only have my medical bag." She patted the purple bag. "And I tend to carry that with me all he time. I will also keep the sickbay clean. I dislike dirt." She said calmly.

"Understood, just that with a small ship, we all share. As you might have noted Tuula extended her 'touch' to various displays on the wall though we managed to tone most down and I did have to tell the previous Executive Officer that it was for anatomical comparison purposes. I am not sure he entirely......what is the term Terrans use......purchased......no bought the idea but he did not argue the point further."

Allyndra extended a hand, "Welcome aboard doctor."

She gave a nod and then shook the CMO's hand. "Thank you." They had arrived at the swabs and Eviess took a DNA swab from inside her cheek. She handed it to Allyndra. "DNA."

Allyndra took the vial and marked it and then put it down to be put in storage and logged.

"So, Ma'am. Is there anything I should know, rules, regulations that are department specific?" She asked.

"Other than you get lovely gamma shift, no. I do have a few experiments going in the lab, so preferably try not to interfere with them. I do have a rule that we avoid surnames and ranks and titles here. I find that makes it more...cozy, friendly might be the better word and keeps the patients relaxed. If you hear me use rank, it means it really is time to pay attention.....or the Admiral is about."

Eviess gave a nod. "Understood." She was surprised the doctor hadn't asked her to examine a patient yet. Maybe she wouldn't get the test this time. "Can I go then?"

"Not quite yet, I have a check in coming in and would like you take the lead if you do not mind?"

"A test?" She sighed. "Very well." She'd expected it. "I will need my bag."

"Not really a test, just to get a feel for how you do things that is all. Anyway, by all means, get your bag Eviess." Allyndra nodded and went to call the patient that was due.

To be continued...
