Mission: Episode 01 - Project Sienna
Location: USS Galileo - Sickbay
Timeline: MD-08: 1100 hours

[ON]

The doors to sickbay opened and Varek strode in, walking with a brisk pace that lacked any sign of fatigue from the events over the past twenty-four hours. He stopped and a pair of cool green eyes scanned the room until they lighted on Pola. Making his way up to her, he gave her a polite nod.

"Doctor, I did not have the opportunity to report to you officially..."

Resting her head on her folded arms for just a few moments, Pola almost let out a groan as she heard someone hail her. She just needed to shut her eyes for five minutes to recharge her batteries but it seemed that her job was never done. Waiting for a moment or two, she sat back into her chair and swung it 90 degrees, indicating for Varek to take a seat across from her. "You've had quite a welcome Varek. This is the first opportunity I've had to thank you for stepping up as you did."

Varek sat down, studying the doctor's face calmly. "Thanks are unnecessary, I was merely performing my duties as I would under normal circumstances."

Slouching back slightly, Pola crossed her legs at her ankle, her face suddenly consorting with pain as her ankle in the boot blazed with pain. Trying to hide the pain. She'd been so caught up in everything that her injury had been ignored and she had now been over 24 hours on her feet. Pushing the pain away she focused on the medical officer infront of her. "So Varek... tell me about yourself."

"I am a medical officer," the young vulcan replied briskly. "Are you injured, doctor?" He noticed her look of pain despite attempts to hide it. "You should treat yourself. A medical officer who fails to take care of herself is a danger to the crew."

Looking at Varek for a moment, Pola found herself rendered speechless. Pausing for a moment, she leaned over and rolled up her trouser leg. "As you can see from the medical boot on my foot, it has already been treated. 24 hours on my feet will cause it to hurt Ensign, no matter what you try do."

"Now that the crisis situation has ended, it would be an unnecessary risk to continue the strain to your foot. You should rest." Considering he was only a medical officer, not a doctor, he seemed quite sure of himself. But then, when did a vulcan say anything they were not sure of?

Looking at Varek with curiosity, Pola realized that she couldn't figure this vulcan out. He seemed similar to most, using logic and lack of emotion, but there was something more she couldn't but her finger on. "Are you aware of the situation onboard at the moment? Unfortunately I don't have the joy of being able to take downtime."

"I would not know if it's a joyful experience," Varek declared poignantly, "but it is your duty to remain in good health so that you can care for the rest of the crew who lack your medical expertise and command experience."

"Ok how about a deal... you take a look at the foot? I've seen your experience with triage, let's see how you get on with general medicine under a non-stressful situation. " Easing back into her seat, Pola had no move until she saw how Varek reacted.

He didn't really react, of course, vulcan was a non-reactive substance. "I perform to the same caliber in a standard operational situation," Varek declared, reaching for his medical tricorder, "However, I am not qualified to provide long-term care for a foot injury. I am trained in first aid and combat medicine, not general treatment."

"That may cause a problem. This is a science vessel, even though this moment in time is proving you do need triage capability, a majority of your time will be spent performing medicals and looking after the general health of the crew and general treatment." Grabbing a PADD, Pola pulled up Varek's personnal file. "Are you open to starting a training regime once we are out of danger?"

"Whatever you see fit to provide, doctor," came the matter-of-fact reply, "Those are not the only areas I am trained in, however. I have received all standard medical officer training from Starfleet Academy, naturally."

Pinching the bridge of her nose, Pola suddenly remembered why she didn't deal with Vulcans much. Even though they were extremely logical and lacking in emotion, more often than not they just confused her. "So in other words, you have the basic knowledge to be able to do general medicine, just not the qualification?"

"No, doctor. I am trained to provide medical assistance to qualified medical personnel. I organize sickbay and keep our supplies in stock. I can administer hyposprays for minor issues. All the standards."

"Ok... it sounds to me your training falls somewhere between being a nurse and being a medical officer. Let me ask you this... where would you like to go with this? Would you like me to put in place a programme in which we could up scale you to be a qualified medical officer?" Pola crossed her feet at her ankles as she felt the pain in her head worsen.

"I am a qualified medical officer," Varek informed her, "I merely have a specialization in emergency medical response. I also possess primary cross-training in flight control, operations, science, and security."

"But your not qualified to the level which you need to be... right now what you physically do places you midway between being a nurse and being a full qualified medical officer, able to actively treat people and Doctor people outside of administrating medication. What I want us to do is work towards getting you fully qualified." Pola squeezed her eyes shut as the pain worsened.

"As you wish, Doctor. I believe you should rest."

"No... right now I need some pain killers for this headache and then I'll be fine. Did you have anything further you wished to discuss with me?" Pinching the bridge of her nose, Pola was astonished that the Vulcan had finally given in.

"Nothing further," Varek said.

Nodding her head, Pola pushed herself to her feet so as she could find some pain killers. "See if you can find Kohl and he'll be able to let you know of he has any work you can help with otherwise find yourself one of our Doctors and tag onto them to give them a hand. If there's any problems or issues, please alert me to it immediately."

"Naturally, Doctor," with a nod of his head, he turned and walked out of sickbay.
