Episode 07 - Sojourn
Location: USS Galileo Deck 3, Sickbay
Timeline: MD-24, 1600 hours
ON:
Tyrion sat propped up on his bed, hugging the blanket to him as if he were stone cold. His body was tense, his expression haunted and his face streaked with tears. He had no idea what would happen now, especially since he had confessed a murder to his own doctors. But why? His jaws were clenched together to the point of it becoming painful, his head throbbing as he wracked his brains over his motive. But he came up blank.
Olsam shuffled over with a hypospray in hand, a light dosage of sedative that might help calm the young man's nerves. Others might have been nervous around Tyrion or concerned about being too close to him, but the Bolian physician walked right up as if the young man were recovering from an ordinary procedure. So he killed someone? Big deal. People killed people all the time.
"I have 5ccs of melorazine here if you'd like something for your nerves," Olsam said, coming to a stop next to the biobed and holding up the hypospray as proof. "I'm sure you're in something of a difficult state at the moment."
Slowly, Tyrion nodded. "Thank you doctor," he whispered, "I have this terrible headache and I feel so confused..."
"Yes, I imagine things are very unpleasant for you right now but hopefully this will help alleviate some of the anxiety," Olsam said, depressing the hypospray into the side of Tyrion's neck. He shuffled over to the nearest medcart to replace the empty hypo but stopped just short to look at the doors of Sickbay as they opened.
Lt. jg Rice frowned as she entered sickbay, flanked by two Security crewmen. "Mr Mott...what seems to be the problem?" she asked. Her Chief had sent her down and Aria...well, she had to do what she had to do.
"Ensign Faye has committed murder," Olsam said, gesturing toward Tyrion with the hand still holding the hypospray. "Well, not right now. It was a past murder. Uh, what I mean to say is that Dr. Voutilainen and I did a memory recovery procedure on Ensign Faye after discovering someone had induced false retrograde amnesia to conceal the events surrounding the death of his ex-lover. The recovered memories indicate that the murderer of his lover is...well...him." The Bolian turned to look at the young Betazoid perched on the biobed, then looked back to Aria. "I'm afraid you'll have to arrest him. He seems remorseful, though. You know, for what it's worth, so maybe he can get some extra rations or something in the brig."
Aria looked at them before sighing, nodding. She wasn't exactly thrilled by this assignment either. In fact she felt out of her depth. "Ensign Faye, we are arresting you under suspicion of murder. You will be taken to the brig and your case will be brought up with the Captain. You will have a defense appointed to you."
Tyrion nodded, feeling utterly numb. "I understand," he murmured, not sure if he was at all fit to even leave sickbay. "I'm not going to fight you, I'll come quietly."
"I'm yet to see anyone kick and scream anyway," she said and nodded to the two crewmen, who flanked Tyrion. "Doctor, is he fit to be taken now? We will send a counsellor to him to assess his mental state."
The Betazoid shook his head as he stood between the two security men, though he was shaking all over. "I don't want a counselor right now," he protested, "I just want to be left alone for now. Please...I need time."
"And I don't want to be here arresting you, but here we are doing things we don't want to. Life sucks like that," Aria said and met his eyes, searching them. "Look, we won't hurt you or have you hurt yourself. Let's get you to the brig, I'll get a blanket and a hot drink down you and we can talk."
"Of course." Talk. Interrogate, he reasoned as he looked away. "Thank you."
"Physically, he's fine," Olsam said, omitting that he was well enough to stand trial; that went without saying. "As long as he receives a psychiatric evaluation to determine his state-of-mind before he enters a plea."
Tuula had been watching the entire scene from the safety of the office doorway. She felt bad for Tyrion; being thrown in the brig for a murder which he didn't even remember until just now -- until she operated on him. Tyrion's grief upon waking up from the operation was genuine; it was hard to believe that he could be a murderer. Unless he was brainwashed or something and the person doing the killing wasn't him.
Being punished for a crime he likely didn't have any control over; surely Tyrion was more of a victim than a monster, having first had his lover murdered then finding out that it was by his hand. As the security officers escorted the patient away, Tuula looked up at her mentor. "Doctor Mott, this isn't right, is it?"
Olsam watched the young ensign pass through the door and vanish down the corridor, frowning. The ethics of the situation were murky, at best, which was usually an area he felt he excelled in but this time he wasn't very certain at all. "He did commit the crime. Unless there were mitigating circumstances, or something we missed...." He drifted off, still watching the now closed doors. Finally, he shrugged. "I just don't know, Tuula. I just don't know."
