"Daddy please don't walk so fast..." Laura whined as she was dragged along by her fast walking father. "I'm tired and I can't walk as fast as you, I'm not as big as you. Please daddy slow down."
Revan turned and waited then scooped up his sister into his arms. "I'll carry you," he whispered to her, watching Delon stride ahead of them. He looked up at his father, sighed, and shook his head. It was best not to bother him now, he was just as tired as they were, he reasoned. "We're almost in sickbay, aren't we dad?"
Naois merely nodded as he strode on though he did slow down a little. He caught his son's stare and nodded. I am tired too. He acknowledged, knowing his son was sensitive to a direct thought. The Vulcan reached and took the girl from the boy, settling her in his arms. "I am sorry Laura, I should know better." He kissed her cheek as they walked into the medical facility.
Eyes brightening at all the fancy equipment, Revan seemed to forget his exhaustion. "Oh man, mom would've loved this place!" he exclaimed, somewhat loudly.
Allyndra waited patiently in sickbay. There was a new officer coming in and though she would have waited until her normal shift, he had children and she was not about to make them miss their much needed rest. A starship might not have a real time but the body needed its rhythms. That was something she knew all too well for the lighting of a starship played on her as well. The Twins dance did not hold sway here.
Allyndra finally heard the sickbay doors open and a tall Vulcan with three children entered. She heard them comment on the equipment. She stepped forward with all the grace she had been taught back in the Guild House.
"Nice, yes, but very limited. The three beds are all that there is." Allyndra replied to the boy and then looked at the Vulcan. Vulcan's being touch telepaths tended not to like touch so she refrained but smiled. "I am the Chief Medical Officer, Allyndra illm Warraquim, but Allyndra please. You must be Naois Mercy."
Naois inclined his head briefly. "Yes ma'am," he answered, "and my children, Revan, Delon and Laura." He pointed at each child in turn though from their visible genetics it was clear who belonged with which name."
Laura tugged her father's pant leg. "She's got wings daddy," the little girl whispered, clearly awed. Shyly, she walked up to the doctor. "Are you a fairy?" she whispered, looking up hopefully.
Her father seemed to sigh and shook his head, indicating the answer should at all times be 'no'. "We are here for our boarding check-up," he stated, though his calm was a clear fare.
Allyndra laughed. "No, I am Akkadian. A chance of evolution making me look a little like those mythical creatures. Here," she straightened and finding enough of a spot opened the wings for a moment before folding them yet again.
"Now then, shall we get your medicals out of the way? Three of you, three beds, though bed one there is our special surgical and containment one." Allyndra pointed to each bed in turn.
Eagerly, the two boys climbed on a bed each, while Naois lifted his daughter up to the third one, gently depositing her up onto the bed.
She waited while the children sorted themselves out and turned to their father, "So doctor, may I call you Naois? I try to keep rank out of here and so many confuse my Guild name as a surname. Anyway, anything special I should be aware of?" She moved to biobed one.
"Naois is fine," the Vulcan answered, "or Doctor Mercy if I am on duty, whichever you prefer." He wasn't particular on how he was called, and as a counselor he often didn't stand on formality either. "The children have no allergies, however I am highly allergic to anything citrus containing. And I have found, it does not matter which kind or where it is from."
"Thank you, now than let's start with you," Allyndra turned to bed one which the older boy had taken, "You are?"
Black eyes stared up at the woman as the boy smiled shyly. "I am called Revan and I'm almost seven Standard years old," the boy answered softly, but in a clear voice. It was obvious that he was used to actually using his voice to speak, given his genetics. "You'll have to set your instruments for Betazoid doctor," he added politely, as his mother had taught him. "I'm Betazoid."
Naois could only smile as the child then pointed at his pointy-eared brother. "He's Romulan, not Vulcan," the boy added, "and Laura's Human." Revan leaned forward, beckoning the CMO. "Can you help daddy? He's very...grumpy lately."
Allyndra smiled, "Maybe I am not needed here. It sounds young man like you have already taken over most of my job. Well you must forgive your father, changes can be hard especially when trying to take care of a family. However," Allyndra dropped to sotto voce, "I promise to take a look." She returned to her normal tone and said, "Lie back, hold still so I can get your baseline." She started the scan and then moved on to each child in turn doing the same.
She then went to their father, "They all appear to be in good health. I do apologize for the lateness. I have taken gamma shift so that I can concentrate on some research projects."
"You are entitled to your own preference," Naois responded calmly as he watched the two boys hop off the bed. He helped Laura down and summoned the boys to watch her while he positioned himself onto the nearest bed. "I will get them settled in their beds once we are settled into our new quarters."
Allyndra was not used to dealing with too many Vulcans and she still needed to settle the shift as well but there was an abrasiveness there. She smiled though it was probably wasted on the Vulcan. "Very good, now then anything new or I should be aware of medically before we get started?"
The half-Vulcan shook his head. "No, nothing that I am aware of, that I have not already mentioned to you." He sighed, more to himself than at her. This was taking longer than he had expected, and he was starting to get a little impatient. "Can we please continue, I have to put my children to bed."
Allyndra made a polite bow and then started. She watched the results come in and raised her eyebrows. "You appear to be in excellent health, however, a moment please in my office." She used a tone that the Guild Mother would use. It was not loud, it was not overly emphasized but it had the nuance of no was not an acceptable answer.
"Children," she turned to the others. "I need to speak to your father about his expected duties privately for a moment. Feel free to look around but please do not touch anything alright?"
The two boys took their little sister by the hand and started a slow stroll about the medical facility, while Naois cast her a curt nod. "Briefly," he added as if to emphasize his earlier statement.
Allyndra then headed to the office. As the door closed she turned and handed the PaDD to Naois. "I am fairly certain I remember my Vulcan physiology sufficiently but it would appear your in the first stages of Pon Far."
"What?" Disbelief crossed the hybrid's features as he stared at the medical officer in front of him. "Surely...I would notice?" But now that she stated it and the news hit him in the face like a brick wall, he did the math and knew she could be right. It had been seven years since his last, which in fact had been his first. "I..." He faltered, his face draining of all colour. "This..." he started again then simply shook his head. "What am I to do?" he whispered, sounding close to panic.
Allyndra waited patiently while Naois had a chance to mentally digest what she had told him. She waited until he seemed to realize the validity of her statement. "Well there have been strides made since the Vulcans revealed the phenomenon which will help with some of the more..." she did not want to say irrational to him and instead added, "irritable side effects."
"Ulimately," she continued, "is to find someone to mate with. Now," her voice took on an almost lecture mode as she pulled knowledge that she had learned, "it has been found that holodeck Vulcan simulations work to fool the mind into thinking it was back on Vulcan, however the same has not been for holographic partners." Allyndra blinked twice slowly and shook her head. "Sorry, is there anyone close to you?"
"Not here," Naois almost choked, "I have only just arrived here and know no-one. There is no-one available to me, my bondmate died three years ago. I have not been with another since, nor have I pursued any romantic relationships." He swallowed, looking up to meet her eyes. "How long do I have, before the situation becomes dire? I will take the medication, if only for the benefit of my children. And patients should you allow me to remain on duty."
Allyndra listened and when he mentioned bond-mate she reached out. She knew Vulcans at least full ones did not like too much personal touch but it was a heartfelt touch. "I am sorry for your loss. I too have been widowed." She held it there for a moment and then withdrew her hand, "A month perhaps. You know medication will only temporarily suspend, and lead to more intense....urges later on." Allyndra felt for the man just having come on board.
The former counselor nodded in understanding. "But that gives me a month respite," he countered, "at least to find care for my children during the time I will be unable to care for them myself. And find someone who is willing to...help me." He bowed his head briefly, acknowledging her mention of personal loss. "I grieve with thee," he added formally, before looking up. "Do you have offspring to care for as well?"
Allyndra shook her head, "No none of my Khareth came back from the sea." She had not thought about that in a long time. There was a moment of silenced and she shook her head of the negative emotions. "Now take care of your children, get arrangements made and your duty on beta is of your own judgement." Allyndra said with a wry smile. "Family comes first."
"Agreed. Thank you doctor, I will make arrangements when it is time, and you have my word my duties will not suffer. I will relieve myself when it is time." He inclined his head slightly. "Good evening doctor, pleasant shift."
Allyndra nodded but already her mind was at work on the problem.
