"Damn damn damn," Elijah cursed under his breath as he hurriedly made his way down the corridor of deck three. He cradled his left, the towel he had wrapped it in only moments earlier had already be saturated with his blood. He had no idea he could bleed like this, or well... he did, but he had never had such a bad cut in his life. His stomach had done multiple flips when he had first realized how deep the gash really was. He knew he had to have hit something major, he could still move his fingers and could still feel with them so there wasn't nerve damage. At least he hoped not.
He entered sickbay. He wasn't fond of sickbay and had tried to avoid the place like it was quarantined. He was in good health so except for any physicals that were required, he never voluntarily went. "I need help," he called out in a strained almost panicky voice.
Allyndra heard the door and the words almost simultaneously and put the medical lab analyzer on standby and hurried out. There was little going on this time and if someone usually showed up it was serious and it only took one look at the blood soaked towel and the panicked face to see that this was not the exception.
She hurried over and said calmly, "Come on, let's get you looked at." She moved the man over to biobed one. It had the fuller compliment of instruments and from the looks she might have to do more than a simple tissue heal.
"Let's get a scan shall we and tell me what happened." Allyndra asked.
Elijah had been slightly relieved that he had been received so quickly. His hand was throbbing and the towel seemed even more soaked. Once guided to the biobed he managed to hop up. "I was in the geology lab," he said through a clenched jaw. "I had been breaking apart some rock samples with a laser cutter and a small pick axe and my hand slipped and I gouged myself with the pick axe." He shook his head. "I have never hurt myself like this before."
Allyndra nodded while she began to gather instruments together and double check his file to see if he was allergic to any particular medications
"Well," she said pushing a hypospray, "let's get an analgesic on board to take away some of the pain."
After that, Allyndra started the scan. She did not yet unwrap the towel until she knew what she had. She shook her head, "You really did catch yourself. Got a tear all long the the flexor carpi ulnaris," she traced a finger along her own arm. "However, the majority of the blood is from nicking the ulnar vein. Well," she turned, "let's get this taken care of."
Allyndra got some telesponges, a heamostat and a tissue repairer. She began to unwrap the towel putting telesponges in place as she went which would whisk the blood away. It was such a waste of good blood but she doubted Elijah would appreciate her imbibing his blood. As she cleared the area and got the stat into place she asked, "So tell me a bit about what kind of sample you had. It must have been some specimen for this."
Elijah looked down at first to see what the doctor had been doing and then looked immediately back up. He didn't need to see how his hand looked. "It was a sample from T'Hellah Four. The T'Hellah use the crystal mineral inside the rock to reinforce the hull on their starships. As it turns out the rock is much harder of a substance then is typically found in most aggregates." He shook his head. "I can't believe how careless I was, honest I am never this careless."
Allyndra got the puncture sealed so she could remove the heamostats. She then started work on the muscle and tissue with the regenerator. She continued her questioning both because of her own curiosity but to focus his attention away from the injury.
"Things happen. We get curious and sometimes that gets us into trouble. However, that does not mean to stop trying. We have a saying: 'If one is afraid of flying then do not try one's wings.' Now then, you said as use in a star ship hull. Very fascinating. How do they fit it since it is so hard?"
"Their process is quite refined, or so I've read. They use a refinery to get access to the crystalline mineral and then it's processed and added to their duranium," he said. "I was hoping to look into it more, figure out what makes the mineral so tough and maybe present it to the engineering corp."
"Fascinating. I would love to read what you come up with. I am presuming that the toughness has to do with the chemistry of the two p orbital something like with diamond." She could not help but let her mind wander. The tissue regeneration work was finally finished.
"There almost good as new. It will be tender and probably even still end up with a small scar. These," she held up the regenrator. "Are good, but deep stuff like this they are still not perfect."
Elijah nodded. "I understand," he said as he flexed his fingers and as the doctor warned, it was tender. He winced slightly but he was just glad it was fixed. "Thank you doctor, I appreciate your help."
"That is what I am here for. Tell you what as a little favour when you finish your research and paper and I would love to get a reprint."
This cause Elijah to smile. Very few people he had ever encountered in Starfleet, besides other geologists maybe, were interested in the research proposals or papers that he wrote. He slid off the bio bed. His hand still throbbed but at least it wasn't bleeding profusely. "Of course," he said a bit more brightly then intended. "I'd be more than happy to share my findings."
"Thank you," Allyndra gave a small curtsey. "Now do be careful with that mineral. I would much rather be talking about such things across the desk than across a biobed. Oh, I also put in a prescription for the pain to use as needed. Farewell."
"Goodbye doctor and thank you again," Elijah said and followed that with a slight nod. He left sickbay, flexing his hand for more reassurance than anything else. He had decided that he would go back the lab and clean up then head back to his quarters. Sleep had alluded him these days, but this slip up had caused him to take pause. He was tired and that would lead him to make mistakes. He hated making mistakes. I can't be careless, I can't make mistakes, he thought to himself as he made his way to the turbolift.
The berating didn't stop at the turbolift.
