The Little Empty

Posted on 02 Mar 2022 @ 3:58am by Lieutenant JG Sofie Ullswater

455 words; about a 2 minute read

Sofie entered her quarters with a bag over her shoulder. Wasn't much in the bag, just some clothes she had with her on shore leave. Wasn't much in the room either, not since Aria left.

She dumped her bag on the floor and collapsed onto her bed. It was obvious now that it was all gone just how much of the stuff in their room had belonged to Aria. The room felt really empty.

So did Sofie.

The last few weeks had been hard on her, really difficult. Since leaving Latari she hadn't been sleeping well her appetite had all but vanished and she was getting a bit prickly around her friends. Nesh's party had been something to ameliorate that but a lack of parties was hardly the issue at hand. Lying there on her bed it was hard to work out really what the problem was. She pulled herself under the covers and closed her eyes.

"Computer, play music." the room filled with music, it was where she had last left off with the playlist she had been listening through. Something from Betazed, she couldn't remember the name of the composer. It seemed nice but she really didn't have the energy to listen to music right now. "Computer, end music."

Quiet again. After a while of staring at nothingness she pulled herself up to a sitting position and called out to the computer once again. "Computer, begin personal log,

"I'm back on Galileo just got called back, some sort of emergency. Seems like Commander Tarin, who I had been working with the other day, is now captain of the ship. I think she seems like the sort who will be good, at least from my first impression of her...

"Things aren't going great, its all very difficult. What happened back at Latari is getting to me. I know I should probably talk to the counsellors or something but you already know how much I hate doing that. I can feel it though, aside from the noticeable things like appetite and... I don't want to talk about this now.

"Computer, end recording, delete the content."

She'd been trying to record a good personal log for a while but it had been difficult. Everything was difficult at the moment. Really she just hoped that this emergency that the crew had been called back for wasn't going to be too much of a weight on her. Ever since the call had come in it had been in the back of her mind that they were going back in, that the Tholians would be there again, that this was all going to end badly. Don't think about it.

Easier said than done.
