Captain's Log, Stardate 69346.2

"In accordance with orders from Starfleet HQ, I, Commander Morgan Tarin, have assumed command of USS Galileo, the Nova-class starship attached to the task group that recently arrived to resupply Regula I. This is my first official assignment as commanding officer of a starship. My orders don't warrant mention and neither does the mission. But I will talk about what I've seen from this storied crew after five days of observation.

First, they're undisciplined. Casual to the point of unprofessionalism at times. Some of the senior staff speak to each other in a way more akin to a sorority than an officer cadre. I learned the ship's officer mess had been removed years ago and turned into...a bar. The remaining mess hall is crewed by Captain Saalm's younger sister - a 19 year-old Orion - and another child who doesn't look like a child, Chief Warrant Officer Alexion Wylde's son, Laeon. Apparently he's 52 years-old but still retains the mental capacity of a teenager. Neither have much culinary or food service experience. The ship will probably experience a food poisoning outbreak in the near future.

The deputy operations officer, Ensign Mimi, fell asleep at her station during the ship's undocking evolution. Her transgression could have killed tens or hundreds simply because she was too tired. Unacceptable. I initiated daily PT as discipline. Which brings me to my next observation.

This officer corps lacks physical fortitude. Ensign Ullswater can't run. Ensign Turell and the doctor, Commander Warraquim, can't do pushups. Again, unacceptable. I don't care about physical biology between species, or how tired someone might be...or not getting enough luxury shore leave time - our shipmates' lives depend on our individual competence. There are alarming deficiencies in this crew's leadership.

The first officer, Commander Blake, has been accommodating of my new command but still remains questionable. Her family history is hard to overlook. How can the daughter of two Maquis parents simply go straight? It's a hard sell. But her service record is strong and she's been promoted time and time again. I spent seven years of my career as an XO - I've been in her shoes.

I'm an outsider to this crew. It's not hard to figure out. The new temporary captain who administers orders and discipline. I've never served on a science vessel before. I have no insight, no mentor. Only my own frame of reference from Yeager and Lexington. And I know, if my former captains had walked in on this ship and its operations, things would be different. So, things will be different, as long as I'm here.

End log."
