374 words; about a 2 minute read

Petra sat in front of her console and stared at it for several minutes. She didn't want to do this. She didn't like doing logs, but she figured it might help her get Latari out of her head. Oh, who was she kidding? It would take a long time before she stopped seeing those images and reliving those events. "Computer start log."

"I was on one of the away teams in the Latari system. The colony was gone. No survivors. I can't talk about it, though. It's classified. I wrote it down and gave it to Marisa for her records. I think those, too, are classified. She was on the other away team. They had survivors…and managed to get 1500 of them rescued by the ships in the task force. I think that much is on record. It was quite a feat. Captain Saalm had to convince a few…people…that they needed to rescue the survivors. Good on her."

"Okay, going back to my away team. On the way back to the Galileo, we found the USS Trial under attack by Tholians." Her voice quavered and she stopped for a moment. "We tried to help them, but we only managed to save a handful. More got away on escape pods before we arrived, it was hard to watch the ship get attacked and…and destroyed." There was another long pause.

"There are times when I really don't like being in Starfleet. Fortunately, ships don't get destroyed very often. In fact, that was my first time. I hope it's my last."

"And now, we're at Regula I for our first break in six months. I plan to get drunk at least once. It won't help, but I'm going to try it at least once. Maybe twice. From what I'm told, there's not much else to do here. After that, I'm going to spend the rest of my leave catching up on forensic research. So, hey, happy shore leave. Maybe I'll see if they have any interesting foods here, too."

She sat for a moment, then pushed the button to end the log and save it. She needed something sweet to eat. She got up and went to see what the replicator had to offer.
