Mission:
Episode 03 - Frontier
Location: USS Galileo - Deck 2 - XO's Office
Timeline: MD (soon after Briefing ended)
[ON]
Jacob had left the meeting room and his collision with Chief Kiwosk to get to his scheduled meeting with the Commander. He straightened his uniform and then rang the door alert ready for (almost) anything.
With a list on his PADD as long as his arm, the XO knew that he was going to be spending several hours now working through the sequence of reports and actions necessary to accommodate the requirements of their mission. The sound of his door chiming of course wasn't something that he really appreciated right now.
"Enter."
Jacob walked into the room and stood at salute form. "Lieutenant Junior Grade Jacob Pendleton here as protocol dictates Sir." He massive stature seemed to take up more room that what reality dictated; his voice was strong, deep and confident as he looked directly ahead.
"Welcome to the Galileo." John replied, looking up from his work and leaning back in his chair to take in the view of the man stood ahead of him. His posture was good, the salute clean if not a little excessive in it's requirement.
"Your transfer went smoothly I hope Lieutenant? Please, take a seat, or at least stand at ease before you strain something."
"Appreciated Sir," Jacob found a seat a least a little more accommodating for his size and then presented his PADD to the Commander and also extended his hand in respect and friendship, "I am honored to be here Sir. I must say that this ship is most incredible."
Taking the PADD in one hand, and the Lieutenant's hand in the other, John quickly leant back into his chair and reviewed the transfer orders in front of him. In modern situations they were little more than a traditional formality, but nevertheless, the XO read through them thoroughly before authorising the transfer in writing.
"She's something, I'll give the Galileo that. We took quite a battering on our last mission so most of the ship is as if we'd just come out of spacedock right now. We'll be getting our hands dirty soon enough though."
Jacob responded confidently, "I am ready sir, whatever may come, you have one hundred percent of my effort at all times. I am looking forward to the next mission sir."
"Your enthusiasm is to be commended Lieutenant. I'll let you know as and when we might need to call upon it. Fate willing, this should just be a simple recon mission, nothing fancy, nothing complicated, and above all nothing dangerous. Take the time to settle in, get used to this ship and her crew."
New officers always had a degree of humility and optimism that John always found slightly infectious when presented to him. Thankfully the mission ahead of them would, at least as far as the XO could hope, go smoothly enough and be the time off that the Galileo had earned since her refit.
"There's plenty of time for adventure later."
Jacob nodded. "I am at your service sir. Whatever you need, whatever you it is you want us to research, whatever it is you want us to tackle, just let us down in the Science department know. Knowledge is power and allows us better decisions; whatever happens during this coming mission, I want you to know that I and am sure the rest of the department is ready to meet the challenge." He smiled at the Commander and then added, "also, I want you to know that I appreciate this opportunity."
"I appreciate your enthusiasm Lieutenant. Now, is there anything else I can help you with? I'd hate to stop you exploring and getting used to our little ship before we get into the thick of a mission?"
"No Sir. I appreciate taking your time to talk with me and welcoming me here. I am honored to be here. I also wanted you to know that I am a bit of good holodeck simulation programmer and if there's any kind of program you want me to make for you, I'd be happy to do so."
"I don't spend much time on the holodecks, but thank you for the offer. Dismissed Lieutenant."
John replied with a smile before giving permission for the junior officer to depart. There was no reason to keep the man here simply on ceremony, and each new recruit would have more than enough time in the coming weeks to prove their own unique skills.
jacob stood up straight, nodded, extended his hand and replied, "Thank you sir. Have a great rest of your day."
