Mission: Episode 02 - Resupply
Location: U.S.S. Galileo, Lounge
Timeline: MD16, 0830hrs

Jared slipped into the lounge, it was early in the morning and he didn't really expect to see anyone there. That was fine of course, he hadn't really come to chat or meet anyone, but just to enjoy the view.

It didn't matter how long he had been in space, he still never grew tired of watching the star field. To many is just looked the same and they grew tired or bored of it, but while he as no expert he was able to tell subtle differences.

He grabbed some breakfast, a bowl of oatmeal with nuts and raisins and large glass of loganberry juice and took a seat near the 'window.'

There were a few people milling about, but so far no one was paying any attention to him. That was probably a good thing he had managed to piss off or at least put off enough people in the past 24 hours.

What was the point in eating breakfast in the lounge, Jessica thought to herself with a mental scowl as she grabbed a bowl of cereal from the side and made her way over to a chair. Oh of curse, that was right, it was to try and get out a bit and socialise with some of the crew. Which of course explained why she was immediately going and sitting down at an empty table by the view port and looking out at the stars, because that would really help in that department. She shook her head and began to eat her food, she really would have to get over this shyness at some point, but hell it had been part of her personality for as long as she could remember, and rather doubted it would change any time soon.

He dabbed at the corners of his mouth as he looked up and saw the woman approaching. If there was one thing that would draw his attention away from the stars it was a good looking woman, or man for that matter.

The woman approaching was not beautiful in the classical sense, but he was young and vibrant, what he would call cute. Her eyes were a stunning green. He always fell for the eyes, everytime. Not that he as falling for someone he hadn't even met yet, but still the eyes were always what got to him.

"The view is better over here," he said seriously, then with just a hint of a smile he added, "And so is the company."

Jessica looked up sharply, surprised that anyone had noticed her presence, but then she came here to socialize so she may as well at least start here, and at least this person was an Ensign like her so there would be no protocol difficulties. She smiled slightly in return and stood up with her food and approached.

He smiled at her and got up from where he was seated and pulled out a chair for her, "There you go," he said, "I'm Jared by the way."

Jessica smiled her thanks, she was honestly surprised that such chivalry still existed but was grateful none the less.

"Thanks," She added, last thing she wanted was for him to think that she was impolite. "Jessica."

"I hope you don't mind my getting the chair for you, my...guardian Rhiell raised me to be that way. It's just automatic."

"I don't mind at all," Jessica smiled. "Pleasantly surprised but no problem at all."

"Good, I'm glad. I'm a firm believer in equality and diversity, but chivalry is not dead. I'm the ship's language specialist, are you science or medical?"

"Medical," Jessica replied, surprised with how easy she was finding this conversation, but then she wasn't exactly driving it forwards. "I'm an Intern down in Sickbay."

"Well I hope I won't be seeing you much on professional basis. Do you have field that you have specialized in?"

"Not Yet," Jessica admitted. "I'm looking to get through my first year before I even start to think about a specialisation."

"I imagine it must be quite a challenge to make a selection. There are so many choices. If it were me, I'd go into trauma, the first responder type. Knowing your actions could keep someone alive. But that's just me."

"That is something I am looking at," Jessica admitted. "I was inspired to become a doctor by just that kind of situation."

Jared put a spoonful of oatmeal in his mouth, chewed and swallowed, "That sounds interesting, tell me about it."

"I was walking in the hills near where I live when I came across a badly injured young boy, I couldn't help him, was only ten myself," Jessica replied. "I ran for help and found a Starfleet Doctor who was able to save the boy's life, and it inspired me."

"That is a truly amazing story. I had a friend at the Academy who was in foster care for a time, one of the families that he lived with was a doctor and that inspired him to become a surgeon, but his story wasn't nearly as interesting as yours, nor was he as cute."

Jessica blushed a very bright shade of red and said nothing as she suddenly concentrated very intently on her breakfast. Subconsciously she knew that to most women being called 'cute' would probably not be what they were hoping for, but she knew that at this point she still had a very youthful appearance and thus 'cute' was the correct moniker and more of a complement than it would have been in other circumstances.

"I'm sorry if I embarrassed you Jessica. I can be a hopeless flirt sometimes, but I really did mean it. You shouldn't underestimate yourself."

"I'm just not used to it," Jessica replied quietly.

"Well then that just goes to prove that most men are blind, stupid, or just insensitive."

"More like I'm shy, withdrawn and insecure," Jessica commented.

"Ahh, well now I've gone and put my semi-big foot in my mouth, again. It seems I can't get away from that. Nonetheless what I said earlier is true. You are attractive and you really should not underestimate yourself."

"Thank You," Jessica nodded, still bright red. "I appreciate that."

"You're welcome. Apparently I've just made a total ass out of myself with you, I'm really sorry about that."

"What do you mean?" Jessica frowned.

"I mean," he said sincerely, "That I have embarrassed you, most people don't like that. That wasn't my intention."

"It's alright," Jessica smiled slightly. "I forgive you."

"Good, " the young linguist replied his smile returning, "I'd hate for us to get off on the wrong foot... Hey, I have an idea. As a fellow newbie to the Federation and the Galileo would you like to make this a regular thing, meeting for breakfast like this?"

"I'll have to wait and see why my duty shifts turn out like, but perhaps," Jessica replied being deliberatly vague.

"I'm just talking about meeting to chat. I wasn't talking about dating." he clarified.

"I understand," Jessica nodded before moving to carry on with her breakfast.

"Not, that I wouldn't want to date you,"he continued hoping he wasn't putting his size 10 shoe into his mouth, "It's just I might be seeing someone, I don't know yet, and I don't date two different people.

Jessica shifted uncomfortably as she finished her breakfast.

"Well, thanks for the company, but I've got duty in a few minutes," Jessica said, excusing herself, rapidly feeling out of her depth.

"Understood."

Jessica nodded and after returning her bowl to the side she departed the room and began to make her way down to sickbay. That had been far too outside of her comfort zone for her liking and she would be glad when she got back to somewhere a little bit more familiar.

He watched her go, hoping he hadn't blown an opportunity to get to know her more. She was, despite her shyness, or perhaps because of it, a fascinating person.
