Eviess sat in the lounge of the Chaka looking out at the stars. She was so glad to be back on Starfleet ground. She had slept for a few days and today she'd helped in sickbay. She was starting to feel like her old self. She looked at the data padd on the table. She had been studying Romulan culture.

Eviess smiled thinking back to her time on the Romulan ship....

=====Days ago=====

Eviess wandered around the Romulan ship. She had been doing some thinking since she got here. She had been reading up on the general database that was given to her she was intrigued and for the first time felt like she belonged. On the Klingon ship she was just a half Romulan to be bullied and tossed about. Here the Romulans didn't run from her nor were they mean to her. She entered what looked like a garden of sorts and breathed in the scents. She then became aware of someone standing off to the side, a Romulan woman. "Oh! I'm sorry. I didn't know anyone was here."

"That was your mistake." S'anara replied with a knowing smirk. "But fortunately for you, one with no consequence."

Eviess smiled. She loved the Romulan way of speaking. Romulan women had a way of carrying themselves with such confidence and authority. She had always been drawn to that side of herself. "I'm Eveiss." She said holding out her hand. "I'm Romulan too...sort of."

S'anara glanced down at her hand and then back up at her. "I can see that." She replied, waiting a moment before finally taking her hand. "I'm S'anara."

Eviess smiled and shook her hand. "Well I only have the Romulan ears and a few other aspects the half Klingon side dominated unfortunately." She looked as though she was going to say something and then changed her mind an then decided to go for it. "S'anara it's nice to meet you. May I ask a somewhat personal question?"

Remaining still, simply observing the woman in front of her, S'anara replied. "You may."

"My mother was the Romulan one, and I've not met many Romulans other then her. What's it like...I mean to be a Romulan woman." She suddenly blushed. "Sorry dumb question."

"Indeed." S'anara nodded, "But it is a respectable one. Fact you are inquiring about it means you wish to learn more of your Romulan heritage and that is commendable."

Eviess smiled. "I do. I much prefer the Romulan side. My mother had all but adopted the Klingon way of life. I was always...the outcast." She was never this forward but she really was intrigued. "I've met so many Romulans and I'm sorry it sounds childish but this feels like home."

"I feel the same way. Being on the Klingon vessel really made me miss them." S'anara replied looking around the garden before returning her gaze to the young woman. "A piece of advice though...always project confidence."

Eviess smile. "I used to be better at that. Somehow I've lost my way with all that happened." She indicated a bench not far by an exotic bush of flowers. "Would you like to sit?"

S'anara responded by moving to sit down on the bench. "Recent events have been rather strenuous." She looked up at her. "How have you adjusted with Starfleet?"

Eviess shrugged, "It has not been easy. Before Starfleet I was just a doctor, I had my own practice and was doing very well. My choice...well there are times I feel it was right to join Starfleet, other times I wish I had stayed behind. It takes some getting used to but on the whole I'm still a healer and doing what I love." She studied the woman. "How about yourself. How is it working for the Empire? Do you miss home?"

"Everyday, but that is out of my control now." S'anara replied quickly, as a flash of sadness flickered in her eyes.

Eviess noted the sadness. She reached out and gently touched the woman's hand. "You can't go home?" She asked.

S'anara blinked and turned her head to face Eviess. Any hint of sadness faded and was almost replaced with anger but the gentle touch cooled her down. "The destruction of Romulus makes it very difficult to return there."

"I know that," Eviess said with a smile. "I mean a Romulan colony...you made it sound like you couldn't go to your people...will...will you be staying with us...the Federation I mean."

"I'm still debating my options, though if I did, I'm sure that would be to your benefit." S'anara smirked. "Seems you could use a friend."

Eviess smiled, "Always!" She looked around the garden feeling lighter then in days. "Starfleet isn't so bad. There are days I miss just being a doctor and having my own practice but I've done so much since joining and seen so much."

"The future is limitless if one is open to it." S'anara replied, nodding her head slowly. "You'll find your place."

She grinned, "It's always good to have a friend to help out. Tell me about home, about Romulus, what was it like."

"You sure you would like to pursue this...embracing of your Romulan heritage?" S'anara asked, ignoring her question for a moment. "You sure that is wise?"

Eviess looked at her, "Why in the universe would that not be wise?"

S'anara looked straight into her eyes "Because you're not Romulan."

Eviess was confused for a moment. "Oh well yes, I'm only half Romulan." She touched her pointed ears. "But..I've never been comfortable with my Klingon side. It's not me. They are vile."

"Of course they are, but you're not Klingon either." S'anara added, "To use a cliche you're the best of both. Trying to embrace one side over the other will only lead to more disappointment in your life."

She smiled at S'anara, "I've never heard it put that way." She touched her Klingon ridges. "There was a time I thought about getting rid of all outward Klingon ... signs but... something always seems to stop me." She looked again at her new friend feeling more comfortable with her then she had with anyone. "I'm really glad we met."

"Me too." S'anara sincerely replied. She reached out and brushed a strand of Eviess's hair that got stuck in one of her ridges and pushed it behind her pointed ear. "The ridges work for you, and an even better benefit is you don't share their sweat glands." She joked, chuckling a little. "Just be true to yourself, both Romulan and Klingon sides."

Eviess smiled. For the first time in days she was truly happy and content. "Not only sweat glands I detest their food and smell ten times better." She laughed.

"And extra bonus." S'anara laughed with her. "You'll be fine, Eviess."

She grinned, "So will you. You said that you were debating staying. It would be great if you did. That colony...it's horrible."

"You don't have to tell me twice." S'anara's smile faded as she let out an annoyed groan. "It's a ghastly, abysmal place. Every suggestion to improve it...overruled. You see it here." she gestured around her. "Madera's warbird alone would have improved the conditions there tenfold but..." her voice trailed off as she merely shook her head. "I don't intend to go back."

Eviess gave a nod, "Good. If you need someone to back you up I will, and we can ask Varro for help too."

"I can handle Madera, no worries. Thank you for your support though." S'anara replied.

Eviess smiled, "Always."

=====Present Day=====

Eviess looked up and saw S'anara walk into the lounge. She grinned and waved. "Over here!" she called out.

S'anara saw Evie wave her over and a smile appeared on her face. She walked over and sat besides the hybrid. "I thought Warbirds were prime in comfort, you Starfleet people are in luxury in your ships, even the small ones."

She laughed. "I have been loving being back here. I actually could shower with real water." She held up her cup. "And you can't beat the Romulan Lattes!" He studied her friend. "How have you been? We haven't seen each other for a few days."
