Mission: Episode 14 - Statecraft
Location: IKS DuJa'Q - Mess Hall
Timeline: MD 02 - 1200 hours

[ON]

Eviess had gotten the best sleep she had in weeks. She had worked all morning in sickbay and now she stopped in for lunch. She looked about for a spot and found one by a young woman with a little child. She smiled as she approached them with her tray. "May join you?"

Stephanie looked up and smiled as she tempted JJ with a bit of carrot, "Sure, I'm Stephanie and this is my daughter JJ, the reluctant rabbit."

Eviess smiled. "Well hello JJ." She sat down. She smiled at Stephanie. "Nice to meet you. I'm Eviess." She saw the little one watching her and she hoped her Klingon features would not scare the child.

JJ looked at her curiously "You like but no' like the grr faces," she frowned frustrated at not having the language skills to say what she wanted. "You no mean 'n scawy."

Eviess laughed. "No I am not. And you my dear are very intelligent." She looked at Stephanie. "What a beautiful baby."

Blushing Stephanie said, "Thanks... call me Steph, all my friends do." She burst out laughing a second later when JJ piped up curiously.

"What 'tell'gent?"

Eviess smiled. "It means you, my darling, are very smart." She looked at Stephanie, "Not eating well?"

Stephanie shook her head no. "We've never had this problem with her before, she's a good eater even when we were captive."

"Tastes icky like wormies." JJ frowned.

Sighing Stephanie had to give her that one. "She is right that the food tastes weird and there doesn't seem to be fruit or anything that we would normally feed JJ."

Eviess gave a nod. "I'll be right back." She left and was back in a few minutes holding a bowl. She smiled at Stephanie. "Mashed Banana's and na'ran fruit. It's the best I could do. May I try feeing her?"

Nodding greatfully Stephanie admitted, "She eats for daddy, mainly because he out stubborns her but today she just seems out of sorts so if you can get her to eat something I'll be eternally greatful."

Eviess smiled. She took a spot next to JJ and mixed up the fruit mix. She filled a spoon with the sweet mix. "JJ my little one. Shall we try a bit of this num num?"

JJ looked up with hopeful eyes, "Num num?" She looked at the spoon suspiciously before opening her mouth with a nod. It definitely looked better to her than the last stuff and she was hungry.

Eviess smiled and slowly fed the fruit to JJ. It was sweet an refreshing. The Na'ran was a fruit that activated ones natural appetite. "The na'ran fruit is loaded with nutrients. The Banana helps offset the sweetness and it will help keep her at a good weight for now. If we let her drink Targ milk it might help too." Eviess said scooping more fruit mix into the spoon.

Making Mmmm sounds JJ ate the fruit happily, watching the spoon so that she didn't miss any of it and Stephanie sighed in relief, "Thank you ... you are a life saver."

JJ swallowed then asked curiously "Wha' 'awg milk?"

Eviess smiled. "It's more yummy nummy to make JJs tummy happy." She said giving JJ a little tickle." She finished feeding JJ the rest of the fruit mix smiling. It was moments like this that reaffirmed her choice of being a doctor. She took a napkin and wiped JJs mouth and then moved back over so Stephanie could take her place back next to JJ.

Steph gave Eviess a greatful smile relieved that her daughter was finally having a meal that she could keep down and didn't reject on taste. "Thank you ... I mean it."

Eviess smiled. "I'll make sure she has some variety of fruit and will get some milk to you."

Varro entered the lunch room. His eyes, as always, scanned the room and locked in on Eviess who seemed to be feeding a child. He watched her laugh and smile. God knows she needed laugh and smile more. He watched until she was done and then made his way towards the table.

Smiling up at the new person Steph said, "You are welcome to join us if Eviess doesn't mind. I'm Steph and Eviess was helping my daughter JJ, a lot of the food hasn't been agreeing with her tummy."

JJ gave him a curious look and an open smile. To her anyone in a uniform like her mumma or dadda wore was safe and a friend. "Hi .. me JJ who you?"

Eviess almost laughed at Varro's expression as the child asked him. "Hello," he said to Steph. "Ambassador Soral Varro."

Stephanie smiled, "Pleased to meet you ambassador."

Varro turned to JJ. "Hello little child. I am Varro. I am pleased to meet you." He took JJs outstretched hand and shook it lightly.

Eviess grinned at Steph. "Varro you need to relax. Speak to JJ on her level."

Varro raised an eyebrow at that. "Right. Of course." He got down on his knees at eye level with JJ and then began again. "Hello little child. I am Varro. I am pleased to meet you."

JJ giggled, "Pweased to meets you too... W'as an 'basdor?" She loved learning new things and the adults around her were fascinating.

Eviess smiled. "An Ambassador honey is someone who talks a lot."

Varro shook his head. "It's a bit more complicated then that. You see, JJ, right? The diplomatic division of Starfleet handles complex..."

Eviess burst out laughing.

Stephanie leaned against Eviess the two of them laughing at the serious looks on both JJ and Varro''s faces as JJ nodded.

"So you like the teachew stopping bullies?"

Varro gave a nod. "You are a very smart child."

Eviess smiled and shook her head. She looked up at Varro as if he'd hung the moon and then quickly looked away when Varro turned towards the women. "A very bright child indeed."

Blushing at the praise Stephanie nodded, "She surprises her dadda and I all the time. We are trying to work out how to extend her while making it fun and age appropriate. " She knew the two would understand.

Varro gave a nod. "There are some Vulcan games and puzzles that might challenge her. I could send over some specifications for you to replicate the games."

Martin had just come in and as an excited child he heard JJ as Ambassador Varro answered the cute question. The Klingon fair wasn't much to his belly, especially the ghargh. At the last moment he thought he might try JJ on some targ milk in a sippy cup for her. While he grabbed a Shepherd's pie.

Seeing her dadda come over to join them with his meal and the yummy targ milk that Eviess had suggested in a sippy cup for her, JJ gave a happy cry of, "Dadda!" That made the adults throughout the room smile.

"Yes dear?" Martin said and rubbed his ear, JJ had and ear splitting shrek when excited. He handed her the sippy cup kissed Steph and said down. "I don't think I have met the two of you. You obviously know that I'm JJ's father, that makes me Martin."

Varro inclined his head, "A pleasure to meet you."

Eviess smiled, "I'm Eviess I was a doctor on the Galileo."

"I don't remeber seeing your information on the Galileo register. Not to say you weren't because being a doctor your normally above my level of discipline so I don't do as much study on the Officers except the heads of departments who may give me something to pass on to the junior sailors." Martin said, "So it is nice to meet you both."

Steph smiled at him as JJ sipped the milk happily, "Eviess managed to find a fruit mixture that doesn't upset JJ's tummy."

JJ stopped drinking long enough to say "T'an you aun'ie evis taste num num."

"Good girl JJ, good manners never go astray." Martin smiled and started enjoying the Shepherd's pie. Being a Klingon vessel he was certain he didn't want to know what the meat was for the Shepherd's pie. Might even be the shepherds.

Stephanie sent him a laugh at his thought as she ate, *Better not to ask.* She giggled at the image.

*Probably so.* Martin sent back before he said aloud, "I thought I would come have a quick meal with my family while it was lunchtime, then they had met you so that means now I have."

"It's nice to meet some of the crew and thankfully they are both from races that aren't surprised by intelligent babies." Steph was relieved by that and the fact they showed genuine interest in JJ's questions.

Eviess watched the two letting her mind wander a bit. A couple in love was always nice to see. She'd had horrible luck in love but she still hoped and dreamed. "So how long have you two been together?" She asked.

"Well we discovered on the way here that we probably joined while in high school. Apparently my mother recognised that Steph was joined and it wasn't to James, who is JJ blood father, who tried hiding the fact and was going to marry her. Steph had a lecturer in the Academy that was sick one day and my mother took over the lesson and would have seen who she was bonded too, and made the Academy harder for her because of it. Though being Betazoid we have an interesting joining. We join for life but often during the Phase have many partners." Martin said. "I suppose we are bonded and I intend on marrying Steph. Mother can be blowed if she still doesn't like it, or Steph. Mother tried to push me to being a Cadet but still didn't get the marks."

Varro gave a nod. "I understand."

Eviess grinned. "Well bonded for life sounds amazing. A soulmate. Very romantic."

"Betazoids normally are thought of that way." Martin said aloud be for he sent his thoughts to Steph. *You know she loves him don't you Steph?*

Steph gave him the mental equivalent of a nod, *I think he loves her too just doesn't know it. Didn't take his eyes off her the moment he walked into the room.*

Eviess smiled. "Well maybe soulmates in a different sense."

"Soulmate sound romantic but you still have to work at the relationship, you just have a bit of a foot in the door so to speak." Steph gave Eviess a gentle smile.

Varro stayed oddly silent through their conversations.

JJ had been watching Varro and seeing him just watching the others talking she toddled over and held out her arms, "Up pease?" She sent a little bit of an idea of her wanting to sit on his lap to watch like he was.

Varro's attention was drawn to JJ. Being half Vulcan he was able to pick up on her telepathy. But he picked her up.

Startled Steph looked at Martin *Do we ignore that she just an image even if it was rudimentary?*

*I think we're best off doing that, at least until she is willing to do something about it.* Martin sent to Steph.

Looking in the same direction Varro was JJ asked, "What you see when look?"

Varro's lip twitched, he almost full out smiled. She was smart. He could see her as a counselor, this one, or diplomat. He was about to answer when a Klingon passed by and said something to Eviess, whose hair had been clipped up, something not so nice in Klingon.

Varro handed JJ to Martin and stood. In fluent Klingon he proceeded to Stand to his full six foot five and in fluent Klingon he spoke to the man. The exchange seemed to get somewhat heated but the Klingon backed down and left.

Eviess unclipped her hair and covered her pointy Romulan ears. She should have known better. Her half Romulan side would cause problems here. She was having a good time with Martin, JJ, and Stephanie, and enjoying that Varro seemed to be letting his guard down.

She felt Varro's hand on top of her tightly clasped hands. "Do not pay attention," was what Varro said but it was hard not to. Klingons hated Romulans, she was half Romulan. He'd stood up for her again. Eviess managed a weak smile. "It's fine. Don't worry. She looked at Stephanie and Martin. "I should go. Sickbay is probably full and lots to do."

"I agree ma'am," Martin said. "I didn't understand what he was saying but I think your ears are pretty!"

JJ who had snuck back to Varro's side said "No run! Me an U'ca Vawo pwotec you. They just big meanies who need spankies fow being naughty."

Eviess smiled at JJ. She picked the little baby up and hugged her. "Thank you sweetie but I really have to go. I'll see you again soon."

Varro watched as she handed JJ back to Stephanie. "I will also take my leave." He gave a nod to Martin and Stephanie. "It has been a great pleasure meeting you all." He nodded to JJ. "Young Miss JJ."

He turned to go and then came back. He took off a necklace he was wearing and put it on the table in front of JJ. "Miss JJ. I want you to think of a colour. Don't say it out loud. Just send the thought to the necklace."

JJ started absently thinking about sapphire blue then turned to Varro and started to say, "It no wowk."

"Try again," Varro encouraged.

The necklace began to pulse but nothing happened.

Varro looked at Martin and Stephanie. "Her abilities are strong." He pointed to the necklace. "It will help develop her abilities. A Deltan ambassador gave that to me. It's mean to focus telepathic abilities."

"Yes both Lieutenant Fraiser and I both know how strong she is; however, as Betazoids, have increased probability of mental problems if the child comes into their telepathic abilities before there teens, we say thanks for your assistance in trying to help her to discover her abilities but I will not let you hurt her Ambassador Varro. No offence meant."

"Mr. Martin keep the necklace and when she is ready it will help her focus and build her abilities." Varro turned and headed after Eviess leaving Stephanie and Martin with the necklace.

*Thank you. We will let her play with it once her abilities start to develop, it is a lovely gift by the way.* Martin sent to the retreating Ambassador and Eviess.
