Location: IKS DuJa'Q - Medical Bay
Timeline: MD 03, 1100 Hours

Varro strolled into the medical bay. He gave a nod to Eviess who was with another patient. He was seeing doctor Allyndra who was off by one of the bio beds. "Doctor Warraquim?" He said as he approached the woman.

"Allyndra," she replied. "Warraquim is my Guild House affiliation. We never use it separate. How may I help you sir?" She noted there was no uniform and was not sure exactly what his position was.

He gave a nod, "Allyndra then. I am Ambassador Soral Varro. I was told to report here for my medical." He indicated the bio bed. "May I?"

"Of course, sir," Allyndra replied. She smiled and asked, "So Ambasador any particular complaints, medical history that I should be aware of immediately?"

Varro hopped up onto the bio bed. "Nothing pressing. In the Academy I did have three broken ribs due to a shuttle accident and back a few years ago I did suffer a mild cardiac episode. Since then I have been fine...I did have some issues while trapped on that prison planet. Rather horrid conditions they were."

"I must agree on the conditions. Well if all goes well and the command there is not stupid and stubborn, there is a chance to improve the quality of life for the people there. As it is, from what I observed the colony is on a failing path. There are not sufficient resources to maintain the equipment. Also, and I would ask you keep this as discretion, let us say that I encouraged a bit faster downward path."

"Of course. All that is said is in confidence." He thought a moment, "Encourage how?"

"Simply to force the fact that either the colony would have to be abandoned which might let this crew go, or force the command to seek help which would result in the colony being known to the Federation and hence rescue. I was not going to spend the rest of my days on that ice ball!"

Varro's lips twitched slightly. It seemed that everything Eelim had said was true. She was a feisty young woman. "I admire your initiative." He looked at the woman. Something about her put him at ease. He shifted on the bio bed his side feeling quite tender from the accident at the water plant.

"Some might, some might not have. I struggled with the ethics of hurting people by causing more breakdowns in infrastructure then was already happening but in the end decided that overall the hurt done in the short term was better than the damage that might be done waiting for actual failure to occur. It is something I wonder about, in fact, many of us higher in the Guild Houses wonder about, are we looking far enough at the consequences of our actions." She shook her head. "Well here I am telling you all about ethical reasoning when we need to get you seen. I am sorry. Now let's have a look if you do not mind."

He squirmed a bit. He hated getting examined. Especially since he'd managed to hide the side wound that was festering under his rib cage. He just wrapped it and let it sit. He knew it was probably infected but he couldn't stand the sight of blood so out of sight, out of mind. "Ethics are always a part of the equation. Every action has a reaction and opens a road of destiny that is radically different from what it would have been like had you not made the decision you had. If I may, I will quote a human expression. You are damned if you do and damned if you don't."

"Perhaps, on Akkadia though not looking at consequences of actions lead us to problems. Now then, let us have a look sir."

Allyndra gently indicated for him to lay back and she got started. It did not take long to see there was an injury and infection, a bad one at that. "How long has this been going on?" She almost touched the area but did not.

Varro sighed. "I don't know...a month. I tried to keep it clean and wrapped it. I have an...an aversion to the sight of blood. I figured, out of sight, out of mind."

"Do you have an aversion to sepsis or blood poisoning?" Allyndra asked with a tiny bit of anger in her voice. "You should," she said and then began to unwrap the area shaking her head. "There is already some necrotizing fascilitis here. I am going to have to remove the damaged tissue and treat you with some heavy anti-biotics." She looked up, "I hope you know you are going to be here for a little bit so talk, sing, tell me your life story or whatever." She went to get instruments to work on the affected area.

Varro sighed. The last thing he wanted to do was stay here. He closed his eyes and waited for her to come back. He saw the look she gave him. "The medical facilities on the planet were pretty bad and frankly blood poisoning seemed like a better alternative then being trapped there all my life." He stated it in a matter of fact voice.

Allyndra looked at him for a second or two and then began to laugh. "I can agree with that. Amazing what people will call home." She shook her head, "they are in trouble though. They are not getting enough lures and equipment raids to keep up with the deterioration of the facilities." It was a moment and then she shook her head again. "Well let us get to work shall we? So tell me about yourself, or whatever comes to mind. It takes your mind off the procedure."

"Doctor I assure you I am but a humble diplomat. I am not that exciting," he said. "Besides pain and I are acquainted quite well. I've learned to embrace it."

"Well most have a background, grew up, experience, decisions to become one's profession, hobbies, thoughts on the universe, most anything." She was going to have to excise some necrotic tissue and though she had local anesthetic the ablation still would produce an odd sensation since not all the sensory nerve ending would be dulled.

Varro supressed the urge to smile. The good doctor was trying to get his mind off things. "I suppose I was meant to be a scientist but when I entered the Academy I found that I had an aversion to it and a liking for diplomacy. I pursued the diplomacy. I gave Starfleet the Mempa agreement and they suggested I pursue the ambassadorial road and here I am. My last post was on New Romulus and then I was assigned to the Galileo. While on route for a vacation prior to my assignment I found myself on the planet that was raised from the pages of Dante's Inferno and here I am now."

Allyndra listened and then asked, "And so in your professional opinion, how would you go about taking a society that has all but forgotten its past achievements, and not only that but buried them away that most do not even know about them, due to a painful episode in the past and reintroduce them?"

"Ah...a challenge" Varro closed his eyes a moment and thought. "I believe that my professional advice is that the society must first admit to the painful episode, allow it to be exposed and dissected for lessons and cautions. The past achievements must be brought to light along with the original motivations for those achievements. A society grows and develops, it adapts. Each generation is different from the last but if they are to bring back and benefit from old achievements, well then, the old ways they must be revived and perfected and the old generation must show the new that they have faith in them to be masters of the future by improving upon the past and by trusting that they will learn from the painful episodes of the past and not repeat them. There is a saying," Varro said and winced as she cleared the wound. "If one does not learn from the past they are doomed to repeat it."

Allyndra thought for a bit on the advice. "I would like to ask you more if I might but anything I would say you would have to keep in strict confidentiality. A sworn oath not to reveal certain information." She looked intently at him, the blue faceted eyes focused hard. "Would you be willing to do that sir?"

Varro inclined his head, which was a bit hard to do as he was flat on his back. "I would not have survived this long as a diplomat if I was not able to keep confidence. You may speak to me about what you wish and it will stay between us," he said honestly.

Allyndra sat back and indicated he could sit up. She thought for a moment trying to organize her thoughts. "A long time ago," she laughed a moment. "Sounds like one of Earth's fairy tales doesn't it?"

"Not at all...perhaps a little." He smiled.

"Anyway, in the past, it was noted that some individuals had the ability to make intuitive leaps. They could bring seemingly odd bits of data together and determine something new. It was not unlike some other cultures. However, it was discovered that the trait could be bred for and so we did. We advanced quickly and from that time came many marvels."

She held up her left hand. "I lost three fingers and a bit of the palm, but you would never know it," she said flexing the fingers. "There is hardly any sign except maybe a tiny bit of line on a detailed scan. No scars, no loss, a complete regeneration. It was a gift from that long ago time. We do not age either like others. I shall never show a wrinkle, or show age, no loss again a gift from that time. And then there is the Fold Ships."

Allyndra looked up at Varro. "Are you familiar with the Icconian Gates?"

"I believe they are a gateway bridge to two points of space-time to make them identical...or something like that," Varro said.

"Exactly so, step from one place to another very distant with seemingly no distance or time having gone by. The Fold Ships work like that but there does not have to be a fixed start or end. If this was one of those we could travel from here to the other side of the galaxy in the blink of an eye."

Allyndra sighed a moment wishing she had one here and now. "Like many we left our world, went elsewhere and tried to establish ourselves elsewhere. However, we found out we are children of our world. The tides, the salinity, the dance of the Twins...the movement of the twin suns." She realized he might not know what the Twins were. "Our biology is tied closely."

Again she sighed, "I suppose those A'ksu could have figured out something, but instead as colonies began to fail they turned their thoughts to coming home. A home that was already over crowded and the thoughts turned to war and weapons. It is not know exactly what happened but eventually out of the chaos, one or more realized that there would be nothing left to fight over. The Great Houses were founded and such devices were either destroyed or put away, hidden where only a few knew about them. We have a saying: 'We put away the past, in order to preserve the future'. The past was put away, and A'ksu trait was tried to be bred out. Thus it has been for centuries, the old things only brought out and used when we needed to. However, as I noted those that know, and know where and how to use them are dwindling. I think we need to follow now a new path and hence my earlier question."

Varro sat up and looked at Allyndra. "Fascinating. I would like to talk more with you on this ad help in any way I can...if you will allow it, that is."

"It is why I brought the subject up." Allyndra said and then nodded, "presuming you do not die from sepsis from not taking proper care of a wound. Now then, you should be on your way to getting better but I do want to check up on the progress and of course if anything seems worse, see me immediately."

He gave a nod. "I will." Varro looked over at Eviess who was helping treat a Klingon. He watched for a moment. "Doctor a word in private if I may?"

"But of course," Allyndra nodded and indicated a corner with movement of her head. "Come," she moved off and then waited. "What can I help you with?"

"Dr. Eviess...I am worried about her. Has she spoken to you at all since this mess with the planet and Galileo started?" He asked.

"No, but then we have all been extremely busy and I will say that I was playing more at second officer and additionally saboteur lately," Allyndra answered.

Varro nodded. "Very well then doctor. I should head out for the moment but let me know how I can be of help to you with what we talked about. "

"I will but first we will have to survive this adventure," Allyndra replied and then added, "if that wound bothers you in anyway or you develop a fever please return immediately."

He gave a nod. "I shall do as you ask doctor," he gave a bow as he turned and exited sickbay.
