Starbase 84

Rico sat a cafe on the Promenade watching the ebb and flow of people coming and going from the Starbase as he finished his meal. He had finally finished his debriefings and had gotten his new orders. Looking again at the PADD he still couldn’t quite believe it; being stationed at the Federation embassy on Risa was THE kick back assignment. He doubted there was going to be anything serious to treat; barring an accident of some kind he was anticipating sunburns and hangovers.

His musings were interrupted as his commbadge chirped. =^= Ops to Lieutenant Montoya.=^=

Tapping his badge he replied. "Montoya here."

=^=Lieutenant, the Serenity has arrived and will be ready for boarding shortly. =^=

“Acknowledged. Could you have my personal effect transported aboard and..."

=^=Already done. Your things are secured in the hold and our Chief has just given her her seal of approval. She’s ready ready and waiting for you...the Serenity I mean.=^=

Rico almost laughed as he envisioned the look on the faces in Ops right now. He wondered if the Chief she was referring to was there at the time. "Thank you very much Montoya out."

Transport ship Serenity

Leaving his quarters to roam the ship Rico found his way to the observation area to see another person relaxing near the portal. The lounge, for lack of a better term, was small compared to a Federation ship so he made his way to the stranger to see if he wouldn’t mind some company. “Excuse me but I was wond…GOODSHIRE?”

Looking up at the figure standing over him he immediately recognized him. “Montoya?! What are you doing here?”

“On my way to Risa for an assignment. You; I thought you resigned?”

“I did, but I came back. Starfleet sent me out here to get my space legs again and the counselor on SB 84 cleared me for permanent duty…” Shrugging. “…so they sent me to Risa.”

Rico knew Oz’s history and laughed “Wait a minute. You on Risa? How are you going to function or do you no longer shut down at the sight of a pretty face?”

Oswald Goodshire shrugged sheepishly. “Noooo I still get…nervous, but where else to face my insecurities than on a planet known for its ‘pretty faces’. I just hope I don’t end up shooting anyone.”

Though not knowing what he meant by the last comment Rico nodded and was impressed. Oz had matured considerably since they had last seen each other.

“You know, I never did get the chance to thank you for getting out of that…”

“No thanks needed. We wouldn’t have been able to get you back if the Captain hadn’t convinced them that it was in their best interest to do so.”

“Regardless I…” Oz stood staring out the portal as the ship dropped from warp and a Klingon Bird of Prey opened fire.

Rico grabbed his friend to pull him away from the portal but they only got a few steps before they were thrown across the room as the transport was hit by photon torpedoes.

Power fluctuated only to fail moments later. As the emergency lighting came on Rico and Oz left the lounge to see the other crew and passengers on the transport scrambling in panic. Grabbing one of the crew-members as she ran past Rico pulled her aside. “Where is your Captain?”

Struggling under the man’s grip on her shoulders, “Let me Go! They’re all dead!!”

Disruptor fire could be heard coming from down the corridor and her panic shifted to terror. “They’re coming!!!”

Letting her go Rico looked for anything they could use as a weapon.

“Shouldn’t we be leaving too…”

Moving back into the lounge. “And go where? Escape pods are easy prey. Chances are that these Klingons aren’t apart of the Empire and if that’s true we could all be in serious trouble.” Managing to break off a table leg Rico pointed to a nearby console. “See if you can access any sensor information. How many are aboard and where.”

Oz nodded. With a task to focus on he could let the big guy handle their defense. “On it.”

Rico knew he could handle himself and he didn’t know what Oz would capable of. His club at the ready he peaked into the corridor to a group of Klingons tagging the wounded and watched as they were beamed away. Backing into the room he waited as there was no use in hiding.

A Klingon entered the room disruptor in hand, his eyes never leaving the man standing in the center of the room.
Speaking one of the few Klingon phrases he knew Rico stood his ground. “Qab jIH nagil! (Face me if you dare).

Calling to his comrades, “In here…this one has fight!”The Klingon grinned and tossed his disruptor and drew his d’k tahg.

The warrior rushed in quickly but Rico knew his business. Dropping the table leg he moved towards his attacker spinning into him. No doubt his opponent had expected him to retreat but with one hand he gripped the wrist of his weapon hand as he drove his left elbow into the Klingon's jaw. Turning away he twisted the, now empty, knife arm over him and twisted him into a position that put the dazed Klingon's face into a collision course with his knee. Rico’s knee catching him on the chin he felt the dislocated jaw break.

The now unconscious Klingon dropped to the floor and Rico faced the remaining Klingons. "Who's next..."

“You fought with honor, but we don't have the time.” With that a disruptor set on stun took the Federation officer squarely in the chest; dropping on top of his comrade. Turning to the other human, still standing there with his mouth open in surprise; who just slowly raised his hands.

Kreanus Colony

Inside the colony's CIC, one of the large holographic data displays blinked to life with an incoming transmission. Medara was the current senior-most officer as well as the colony administrator, and as such, she was the first to arrive at the station and tap several encrypted sequences into the terminal's keypad. The image before her quickly fizzled then blinked to display a clear view of Ko'raH perched in his battlecruiser's command chair.

"Yes, Ko'raH?" she asked, tilting her head slightly to the side while privately wondering why he'd interrupted her work.

"We have seized control of this starship!" he flaunted. "Registration USS Serenity, as your intelligence predicted," he boasted. "We have captured their entire crew and are now securing their cargo provisions. Should we destroy the vessel when we have finished, or capture it for further use?" he asked.

While a transport ship was not the most useful of starships for their purposes, it was undoubtedly full of Federation technology and components which could be salvaged for other uses. To destroy the vessel would be a massive misuse of force, she calculated. "Disable the navigational logs then bring it to Kreanus. We have several starships in need of Starfleet technology," she instructed. "But Ko'raH," she warned, "be sure to account for all the crew and transfer them to your vessel during the transit." The commlink closed with a deep chirp.
