A Bad Goodbye

Eelim had a couple of hours left in his shift and was just finishing his report when his desktop panel chirped. After a short conversation with the coms officer he was told that he had a communication from Earth. He smiled in anticipation. Things had been rather emotionally trying on him and there was only one person who could call him from Earth. Myra.

He waited and watched as the Starfleet emblem turned into a familiar face. “Myra!”

Myra smiled at Eelim. Not her usual bright smile but a strained one. =/\=How are you Eelim?=/\=

He sighed. “It’s been… I don’t know. I’ve made some friends and I’m starting to feel comfortable here but the news about Derat… Myra he died.”

=/\=Oh Eelim I’m so sorry. How are you holding up?=/\=

He shrugged. “Okay. How are you?”

She pressed her lips together in that way that let him know that something was wrong. He’d seen it to many times. She was stressed out. =/\= I am in the finals. It’s between me and another designer.=/\=

Eelim smiled again. Maybe it was just the stress. “Hey that’s great. You know that you’ll win, right? Your designs are beautiful.”

She smiled sadly for a moment and then burst into tears. =/\=Oh Eelim.=/\=

Worry creased his face. “What’s wrong? Are you ok? Do you need me to leave?” If she wanted him to he would. He’d find a way.

=/\= No Eelim. I have to say this quickly or I won’t at all. Eelim you said this relationship was to keep me safe and in your life but you fell in love with me didn’t you?=/\=

Ha blushed. “Yes.” It had been the first time he admitted it to her. “It’s more then just convenience I love you.”

=/\=No! Oh Eelim why?=/\=

He looked confused. “I…”

She swiped at her tears and took a deep steadying breath. =/\= It’s over Eelim. I thought I loved you but…I can’t. =/\=

His eyes moistened with tears. “Myra I don’t understand.”

=/\= I met Jake, it was…it was like nothing I’ve experienced. Eelim I’m going to marry Jake. =/\=

He felt his very soul shatter. “I..”

=/\=It’s more then that. I’m Bajoran. Jake pointed out to me that I left Bajor all those years ago and if I marry you I can’t go back. What would they say? A Bajoran with a Cardassian.=/\=

Eelim turned his eyes away. When he looked up again he saw her take off the ring he’d given her. =/\=I’ll leave this in your house and then lock up and leave the key with your neighbour Ms. Adamson. Jake and I will be married on Bajor and then we’re going to Starbase 73.=/\=

“I…I thought you didn’t want to be on ships and starbases anymore.” He said.

=/\=Jake loves it so I’ll go with him. I know what I said and… well if I really loved you then I could put up with it. I love Jake.=/\=

He blinked rapidly to try and keep the tears at bay. Calling up all the strength he had he sighed and gave a nod. “Okay…I…I wish you all the happiness in the world.”

The com ended. Eelim sat motionless for several minutes. His thoughts interrupted by another security officer who handed him a fresh to do list. He pushed down his pain and locked it away for the moment. He had to focus on work, when his world was falling apart it was only work that got him through it. “I’ll get this done before I my shift is over.” He told the other security officer and got up to head on his way, to do list in hand.
