Once the ship had docked, Gyce had been informed of new personnel arriving. The detective in her, immediately found herself going over the files of her incoming security officer. She was glad to have him, but really, she needed about ten more just like him.

As the doors to the security office opened, Gyce looked up to see her new arrival. "Welcome, Chief Warrant Officer."

Greg had just recently boarded the ship. After spending the past couple of months on two different Starbases, first Starbase 418 and recently Jupiter Station, it honestly felt good to be back aboard another Starship. Greg was never fond of remaining in one place.

Since he hadn't received assigned quarters yet, he had placed his duffel bag out in the corridor next to the wall before entering. Entering the room where his new superior officer Lt. Benice (he never got used to the Bajoran custom of placing the first name after the rank) was waiting for him. He smiled and stood at attention.

"Ma'am, Chief Warrant Officer Greg Mitchell reporting as ordered." he introduced himself in the usual military manner.

"Have a seat, Mister Mitchell. Tell me about yourself," Gyce insisted with a warm, welcoming aura.

Greg walked to the chair and sat down. He was glad everything appeared to be off to a good start on this new assignment. "Well, I'm a former police officer for the City of Champaign, in Illinois. Enjoyed it, I'm from that area. A little after the Romulus/Remus incident and the Enterprise I applied to Starfleet. I figured I could do a better job protecting people from the front lines. Passed basic in '81. Been in security since."

Greg then went on to explain about his postings. "I was stationed at Fort Conner Spaceport. Spent most of the time there on the gate." He referred to the much hated position of guarding the main gate of a military instillation. "Finally got transferred to USS Star Angel, where we did a lot of recon and patrol missions. Then I was transferred in '85 to the USS Ohio where we patrolled the Romulan Neutral Zone. Tour ended, I got a transfer here. Been helping out in the mean time at Starbase 418 ever since." Greg concluded his career, hoping he hadn't given more information then he was asked for, but he wanted to make a good first impression.

"Well our mandate here is to protect the scientists," Gyce spoke as respectfully as she could while she poured some iced jumja in her glass for Greg. "Many of them refuse to take up arms when it's called for, so that makes our job a little more difficult. And with only fifteen of us, anytime the admiral or all our ambassadors want to tour a place, that's going to be all hands on deck... So our secondary task, rather the Command Staff want to admit it or not, is to keep our Flag and ambassadors safe. So two and four man teams, maybe more, depending on how dangerous Intelligence tells us it is. Which means you'll want to get on friendly terms with everyone here."

Greg received the drink with a smile. "Thank you ma'am." He took a sip. "Good. Yes, making friends on here shouldn't be an issue for me. I try to be an open person and when working I am very professional. We ran through admiralty and political protection drills a lot on the Ohio. Sovereign class ships love to be run like a small city." he chuckled, "But, my idea is that, treat everyone like a decent person and you will get further in life."

"This is a small country setting," Gyce spoke with true envy. "They are also scientists, which means, most of them are idealists and very rarely keen on disrupting their life. So you'll find a far more laid back atmosphere - the way our CO wants it."

Gyce lowered her voice, "I do not speak ill against anyone, but this is a belief that generally gets people killed because of the small percentage someone might do something stupid - which scientific minds generally believe the statistics will not affect them. And as this is a huge soft target, I urge you to keep objective and never let your focus slip - even among the friends you make here. We are the scientists' first and last line of defense, after all."

Ah, this is going to be different. Greg thought to himself. Exactly why he signed on. "No problem there ma'am. I was known unofficially in my last posting as 'the smiling cautious one.' Like I said, I treat everyone with respect upon initial encounter. But if a threat arises, I take action immediately. During down time, I usually sit with my back to the wall so I can see the whole room." Greg chuckled again. "Made it real hard to eat at a fast food restaraunt, with windows everywhere."

He got serious again. "If I may ask, though, what exactly is the personal firearm status of a Nova Class science vessel? I know we have the usual hand phasers. But do we have anything more powerful in case of invasion? Rifles or stun grenades?" Greg hadn't been able to check the full compliment of the ship yet, but he wanted to make sure that in the event of an all out battle, the ships would be in good hands.

"Phaser rifles, a few photon grenades. Since this is a science vessel, the brass keep us armed minimally," Gyce explained. "The Master-at-Arms keeps the phasers locked."

"That makes sense," stated Greg, "Also helps keep the vessel from registering as a full military target. I never put too much stock in the heavier stuff unless I had to anyway. Always preferred the hand weapons. Unless things got bad. Are we armed with hand helds during normal shift? Or are those secured also?"

"Security are the only ones to carry firearms. For that matter, we ask for permits if we see non-security carrying them," Gyce reminded her newest deputy. "And of course, searches of personal property are prohibited unless given probable cause."

"Understood, ma'am. Is there anything else routine wise I need to know about?" Greg asked, hoping he was coming across as professional. It was important to be prepared before starting a new posting.

"Not that I can think of, but rest assured, if the command staff ever approve some security protocol upgrades? I will be pulling everyone in to discuss those," Gyce promised.

Greg nodded in agreement, "No problem. It's been nice to meet you ma'am. I look forward to working with you." He extended a hand to shake.

"Good to meet you too," Gyce smiled as she shook his hand. "You're free to when ever you like."

After nodding and smiling once more, Greg left the room and grabbed his duffel bag. He was pleased that he made a good first impression on his new boss. Hopefully he could perform well in this new assignment.

He made his way to the turbolift. The next person on his list to meet was the Captain of the ship.
