Running his hands across the lip of his new elaminite desk, Andreus Kohl could have sworn it was made from genuine black-brown wood rather than replicated matter. Even the grain felt authentic. The kidney-shaped desktop was propped on legs tall enough to force Kohl to stand at it, rather than sit. The new desk had been wedged into a back corner of the office, leaving most of the floor space for a sitting area away from the desk. The blond Areglian fiddled with the positioning of the LCARS console on the desktop. First, he moved it over to one side, and then he brought it closer to well within his body's reach envelope. Kohl rounded the desk to come standing behind it, giving him full view out the viewports between his office and the corridor connecting the different compartments in Sickbay.

The door slid open to the med bay and Kiwosk tried bravely to not feel sad that Pola was no longer there to greet him. His week prescription had run out again, though it he had kept going since Vega IX. Something he was proud of. He scrunched his face up as he tried placing the newcomer's face...he knew he had seen him before.

His eyes widened slightly as his name suddenly filled his mind. "Kohl!" He exclaimed loudly. "Long time, no see." He gave a small smile and extended his hand for a hearty shake. "You must be Pola's replacement."

Kohl snapped his attention towards the boisterous exclamation. "Chief Kiwosk," Kohl said in return, but not nearly as loudly. More than anything, Kohl sounded surprised. When he first laid eyes on Kiwosk, it had been through the critical lens of a best friend trying to decide if he was good enough to date Pola. Kohl hadn't remembered their introduction as being much better than mildly awkward, and so Kiwosk's warm welcome caught Kohl off guard. As Kiwosk approached, Kohl stepped out from behind his desk. Despite their slightly strained history, Kohl's eyes trailed down to see how the young man's muscular frame filled out his uniform. It wasn't something Kohl was proud of.

When Kiwosk extended his hand and spoke of Pola, Kohl clasped the hand between both of his own, giving it a good shake. "Uhm, well yes," Kohl said haltingly. Unbidden, Kohl's polite smile broke out into a proud grin. "Apparently, I am Pola's replacement?"

Cyrus tried to suppress a wince as he thought about Pola yet again. It seemed it was all he could really think about during the day. " Well, I'm glad it went to someone deserving the role." He told the former nurse. He set his prescription sleeping aid down on the table. "I'm finally out of my week prescrip." He explained. "I was wondering if you'd give me a refill, the same dosage please, I'm glad I don't need the stronger ones anymore."

Reaching across the desk, Kohl dragged the LCARS terminal closer. Kohl waved the prescription container over the console and the prescription history populated the display alongside Kiwosk's medical chart. Glancing over Pola's medical notes, Kohl only gave them a cursory read. He turned to consider Kiwosk and said, "Did Pola complete your treatment?" --He waggled a finger at Kiwosk's shoulder-- "Has she resolved the scar tissue?"

Cyrus nodded, though he unconsciously rolled his shoulder. "Yeah. She finished a while ago..." Was all the ex-marine could say. " Not to sound insulting, but this place just doesn't seem the same with out her here."

Kohl agreed entirely, and yet the comment brought a thoughtless remark out of Kohl. "You've determined that in thirty seconds?" Kohl asked dryly.

"You know what I mean Andreus." He replied. "You ever fall for someone, only for them to head elsewhere?" He asked suddenly, his eyes widening in surprise at the question.

For almost five seconds, Kohl held perfectly still. Even his face didn't move in response to Kiwosk's question. Then, he slowly lifted his hands to grip the desk behind him. "No, I suppose I haven't," Kohl said thoughtfully, letting the answer our cautiously. "I'm the one who keeps leaving. ...Left men behind on Vega Colony and Bactricia."

"Ahh." Was all Cyrus could say to Kohl's question. "You heartbreaker you." He added jokingly. "She was the first one that actually made me feel welcome on the ship, and we really hit it off...and now she's gone." He sighed. "It's one of the few things I really hate about being part of starfleet. You don't know how much time you really have with anyone." He sighed. "I was so stupid for falling for her."

Meeting Cyrus' eyes, Kohl hesitantly asked, "Did you-- Had you proposed marriage to her?"

His eyes went wide and shook his head. "Whoa, man. We had only been together a month. A proposal would have been a little soon, don't you think." He gave a surprised laugh and took a breathe, the initial shock having left as he thought at the odd question. "You did though...didn't you." he stated, though he formed it in the form of a question.

"No. Oh, no," Kohl said, and he shook his head emphatically. Sheepishly, Kohl admitted, "I was trying to make a point in an, evidently, artless manner." --Kohl rubbed the back of his neck and he winced-- "If you were able to fall for Pola without expecting it to last forever, it wasn't stupid to do so just because she left."

The words rang true but Cyrus simply shrugged it off. "Easier said than done." He replied bitterly. Taking a breathe he shook his head. "you're right Kohl, I know you're right...it's just a pain is all. I need some off time and a drink. I wish I knew where Quinn was." He chuckled despite himself.

Kohl opened his mouth, ready to say something else about love and loss, but he just bit his lip. The moment had passed, and he didn't want to be the one to drag Cyrus back to the pain part of the equation when he had moved on to drink. Instead, Kohl asked, "You're looking for Quinn?"

"Has a private stock of homemade beer." He explained quickly. "He'd kill me if he knew I told you."

Smirking mildly, Kohl assured him, "I won't tell if you won't tell." Then he cocked his head to the right and the smirk came alive on his lips. "Well, maybe you owe me a favour now. To keep me quiet and all."

Cyrus chuckled and nodded. "I suppose you do. And it looks like I'm in need of a drinking buddy. Because damn it I need a drink and bad."

Oddly boastfully, Kohl said, "You're in luck. I was born to drink." Kohl grinned at Cyrus as he typed an access code into the LCARS terminal on his desk. A moment later, Cyrus' prescription materialized in the office's replicator. Kohl went on: "I hate to eat alone in my quarters. You can find me in the mess hall most any meal time."

Grinning he took the medication, shaking the bottle before slipping it into his pocket. "Done. Thanks for the help Kohl." He replied. "I'll see you later then." He finished as he made for the door, suddenly feeling a little better.

"I'll see you," Kohl replied, as he watched Cyrus leave. Is this what being a Chief Medical Officer is going to be like? Kohl wondered idly. Because this I can handle.
