Mor'an arrived at the door of her quarters to find a vase filled with flowers in a rainbow of colors. If she remembered correctly from her time on earth the flowers were called roses. They were popular among many of the females at the Academy as their choice of flower. Caught by surprise and unsure of what to do with the gift, Mor'an sat cross-legged in the floor next to it, not touching it just yet. She caught sight of the poem written in strong penmanship. After reading it, she realized why the roses were outside her door.
"Burok'c," Mor'an muttered to herself, the Tarkannan exclamation slipping from her lips unnoticed. Sitting on the floor and staring at the roses, she thought about who could have left them for her. She had had very little contact with males on this ship. The only ones she spent time with since her arrival were Remington, when he was alive, and Lt. Amril, but only because they were in the same department. Lt. Amril was hardly the type to leave a vase of roses outside her door.
Suddenly it came to her. There was one more male she had had contact with recently: Lt. Pendleton. It must have been him, she thought. She wasn't sure if this realization pleased her or not. While it was nice to receive flowers, that was not how things were done in her culture. There were rituals and rules that had to be followed before declaring anything to a female.
These thoughts jumping around in her head, Mor'an picked up the vase of roses and cradled it in her lap, careful not to bang around the delicate rose petals. Burying her nose in the flowers, she inhaled their scent. They reminded her of moi'law'i, the water flowers that grew near her home. The similarity pleased her greatly.
Standing, she opened the door to her quarters, setting the vase down on a table. "What am I to do with you?" she asked of the flowers, only to receive the expected response of silence. What was she to do now? Was she to send a gift in return? Or simply thank Jacob? This was all very new to her, since her culture was so very different from Jacob's. She decided that, for now, she was to do nothing. Though she knew Del'an would not approve, since Jacob had refused to ask permission before giving her a gift of such a nature, Mor'an was grinning at the roses, so vey pleased at their presence.
