"Look at the stars." His voice was quiet, almost reverential, as he lay on his back in the grass and stared up at the night sky. "Everything else in life fades eventually, but not them. They never change."

Eve knew it wasn't quite true, that stars sometimes faded into darkness, or went nova. I hope you don't say things like that in you class... she thought, as she turns to make eye contact with the man next to her. Her eyes must have betrayed her thinking as Richard gave her that knowing smirk she became all too familiar with.

It been a little over a year since they been married, and it still feel fresh and new as if they said their vows yesterday. As her gaze returned to the star filled night sky above, she lets knows he has a point. Stars existed for an extremely long time. Ancient Earth civilization had gazed at these exact same constellations thousands of years ago, and the very same stars would still be lighting the night sky thousands of years from now, long after the two of them were gone.

She doesn't remember who's idea it was to head outside and stargaze, but she was glad they did. She reached out her hand and took his in hers.

"The important things in life don't change, Eve." He squeezed her hand. "The stars, the sun, my love for you..."

Evelyn turned her head and looked at him once again, noticing the gleam of amusement in his eyes-- or perhaps it was only starlight. "Why, Richard Coleman," she said softly, "how poetic of you."

He flashed a grin, and pulled her closer to him, so now Eve's head was resting on his shoulder, "I have a poetic side," he assured her.

"Uh-huh. You're about as poetic as I am, which isn't much. Still..." Her hand squeezed his in return, leaning over to softly kiss him on the lips. "Thanks. I appreciate the sentiment."

"It's true," he said softly.

Evelyn looked back up at the stars and smiled.

"I know," she whispers, "I love you too."

San Francisco, Earth; 2389

Evelyn was laying on the grass gazing up at those very same stars. Very little had changed. Sure she could pick out a dark space or two where a star had once glittered, but on the whole, the vast sweep of stars above her glowed across the velvety dark sky exactly as they had on that evening so long ago.

But Richard wasn't beside him.

She hadn't been beside him for a very long time.

She sighed, feeling the ache of loss as if it were yesterday. She loved him then, and she loves him now.

The important things in life didn't change.

Even though he has been dead and buried for sixty years... she still loved him.

Look at the stars. Everything else in life fades eventually, but not them. They never change.

His voice softly echoes in her ear and Eve reached out for his hand, remembering that night seven decades before, but there was nothing there.

Richard had been right. The stars didn't change, not really. And even all these decades later, as she lays alone on the grass, with only the stars for company, she thought of him.
