Bitter Memories I

434 words; about a 2 minute read

The deep red light filled the area, along with the blaring alarm noise that hurt her ears. People were rushing about in an almost panic as the young girl was dragged along behind her mother through the halls. They were trying to get to the safety of their quarters. Her mother had traveled through all of this chaos for the sole purpose of retrieving her child from the ships school. She had known is wasn't the smartest thing to do, but with the state of the ship, it was highly likely that the order to abandon ship would come soon.

The young child could hear her heart beating in her head as the tug on her arm became more urgent. The young girl was dragged into the turbo lift, her mother shouting urgently, "Deck seven!"

The ridiculously calm computer voice responded with, "Deck seven is breached, please select another destination."

"Deck nine then!"

The same smooth voice responded once more, "Deck nine is breached, please select another destination."

"Then take us somewhere that's not breached!"

The turbo-lift lurched before finally moving. The young girl cried out, clinging to her mother for comfort and support. When they finally came to a stop the doors opened but not far enough. There was only enough room for the child to fit through. They could see people on this deck rushing about as well. Her mother called out to a nearby ensign who quickly rushed over.

The surprisingly young looking woman, urged her child toward the open door just as the turbo lift lurched again. "Miriam, you need to go with Ensign Carter, okay? He'll take you to your father."

The girl shook her head avidly, "No, I want to stay with you."

Her mother smiled bitterly, "It's not safe here, and mommy can't fit, you have to go with him. They'll get me out when they can okay? But for now, you have to go."

The small girl bit her lip in a pout but nodded slowly, "Okay mommy, you come soon, okay?"

The El-Aurian woman smiled bitterly, fighting the tears that were bubbling in her eyes, "Of coarse, sweety. I'll be there soon. I love you Miriam, and don'e ever forget. The stars are there to be discovered. So discover them."

As Miriam was guided through the open door, and lifted into the air by the human Ensign she waved lightly to her mother, watching her fade over the young man's shoulder. Miriam was too young, too naive to know then, that this moment would be the last she saw of her mother.
