Committed to Memory

Posted on 01 Jul 2015 @ 2:07am by Nevedno Lož

550 words; about a 3 minute read

Nevedno sat upright in his chair within his quarters. Tense and filled with anxiety, he certainly had a lot on his mind. At first he had disliked doing logs of any sort, thinking they exposed a side of him he didn't always like, but he had grown to like them, a sort of remembrance even if only in digital form. With only a bit of hesitation he began his log...

"Where to begin, Computer. I have learned about so many new parts of my life only to have them immediately taken away. Is it by some fate that the powers that be have whisked me away to a place where I no longer have to worry about such things? Or could it be a test? To run would be so easy, but to ignore my responsibilities would be beyond unforgivable.

"My daughter, Alexis and her mother, Olivia. I don't even know what she is to me at the moment. Even 'companion' would be a stretch given the circumstances, but I feel with time it could be that and more. Perhaps with a family I can at least have some sanity in my life, however difficult the journey will be.

"I'm afraid. I'm afraid for myself, but more-so for Olivia and most of all Alexis. We will both be alone amongst so many. I just pray that she can remain stable through her life. I certainly find it most difficult at times. How will a child handle the same situation? Will it be almost normal for her since it will be from birth? I'm sure we will find some help, though. Strangely enough it is the computers like you, Computer, that have helped me stay sane. I find it somewhat disappointing that you do not have a personality or even a name. Anything other than 'Computer' would be lovely."

"I am programmed to be addressed by 'Computer' or 'Galileo', along with the ability to be addressed by other means if necessary," Computer, Galileo responded.

Nevedno smiled warmly. It was almost like a personality, though he knew it actually wasn't. "Galileo. What a lovely and fitting name." He had never heard a crewmember address it, her, as such, but he was most pleased to learn that he would be able to with response.

He sat back in his chair in a more relaxed posture as he continued his log. "Perhaps with your aid we can make this work. I really do want to mend this relationship. There is a sense of responsibility but also a sense of desire. Through the creation of a family unit I can make a noticeable mark on history. Something to be remembered by even if it is never by name.

"Though how will we ever return home? Will I ever even have a chance to mend this new and fractured family? Must we make the same near disastrous mistake once more to return? Risk death another time? I hope there is another way. I'm sure the minds more brilliant than my own can concoct some sort of solution. Then maybe I can get to resolving my own problems upon our return. A commitment to being remembered. For now, though, there are more urgent needs than trying to make impressions...

"Galileo, end log," he said with another smile.
