"....and make sure those phaser couplings are calibrated properly this time dammit!!"

The voice of the Chronos' temporary captain opened his log entry with a thumping of the desk and the sound of a PADD being slammed onto it's surface alongside a fist.

"Captain's log - Jonathan Holliday reporting. We are in final preparations ahead of the start of our war games with the Klingons, and I find myself surrounded by cadets that seem to have no concept of what it takes to successfully operate a starship.

So far I have had three counts of phaser coupllings misaligned, torpedoes not being loaded into the starboard launchers, and at least one of our backup shield generators was left in a diagnostic mode. Whilst this might not be a true combat situation, these cadets are going to learn pretty quickly once they graduate that your enemies won't usually give you twenty four hours to prepare.

I can't believe I'm about to say this, but I really miss being aboard that science ship of mine. She might be full of scientists who prefer a petri dish to a photon torpedo, but at least they know what they are doing.

This ship is a predator, designed and built for war, but staffed by children who know nothing of it. Hopefully by the time they get back to the Academy, they will know a little more of what to expect in a fight. Indeed those of them who will be serving on the Bridge will have the most to learn."

The sound of a comm badge chirping interrupted Holliday's thoughts, and with an audible sigh, he slapped his chest.

=^=This is Holliday. Report. =^=

=^=Sir this is Cadet Macintyre in Engineering - we're having some trouble getting the impulse regulators to align properly. We thought you might be able to lend a hand? =^=

=^=Cadet let me get this straight - you're an engineering cadet, assigned to an engineering post in the middle of a wargame situation, and you can't get the damn engines to work? =^=

There was a moment of silence...

=^=Yes Sir. That...would be about right. =^=

=^= *sigh* I'll be right down.=^=

For the record - Admiral Saalm can expect some sort of revenge...I'm not sure what, and I'm not sure when...but I have plenty of time to think it over whilst I drill these kids on the finer elements of basic engineering. Mr Quinn would rip them a new one given half a chance...I'm the milder option.

End log.
