When one's curiosity is wide as the sea

910 words; about a 5 minute read

Personal log Allyndra illm Warraquim start.

"I had that dream again, it seems every time that I start a new ship it always comes back. I guess the psychiatric side of me says it is unfinished business, a period of my past I have not moved by yet."

Allyndra paused the recording to organize her thoughts. She sat in guest quarters aboard the USS Venture and they were nearing transporter range with her new ship.

She started again. "It seems odd to find myself again heading for duty on the ship that I did my cadet cruise on. It seems ages but not that long either.
How much of life that seems random but at other times it is as if invisible currents carries one to a destination.

She sighed. She needed to get this out, again, and time was running short.

"The stars have called again, and perhaps the Colony had reminds me too much of home but not quite close enough. It was that odd ache to see the Twins but instead only a single sun. It was that lovely touch of warm salt water but the air felt different. It was to sit on a beach in the night and wait for Ring Rise but it never came and only tiny odd coloured moons shown in the night sky. Maybe that is why I had to move on again and doing so brought up memories instead of life that now seems as ancient history as a Fold ship."

Allyndra laughed. "I should not speak of such things, not openly."

"Computer erase last sentence."

"Now where was I? Oh yes, the dream of the past that seems to haunt me. It was one of those typical High Summer Nights, warm, balmy with a gentle breeze blowing from the land to the sea. The Queen of Night's Promise had not yet shown itself and the stars could be seen in all their myriad patterns and colours. My husband Gerrin was painting my portrait in an odd ancient style that required much skill.

Gerrin the artist, ah how it seemed a whirlwind romance and our two Guild houses had thought the match an excellent one. However, I digress again.
Gerrin was painting my portrait even though I wished he would not. I remember the words that were spoken like they were hours ago instead of years.

'Almost done Allyndra, I think you will like it. And you look most beautiful may I say.'

'I do not feel beautiful' I replied, nor did I being heavy with the fruit of our love and in a simple flight dress. Gerrin only laughed.

'Ah to me you pale the Twins.'

'I doubt it, how much longer?'

'Not long, besides look' Gerrin stabed the end of the brush toward the sky to a blazing white point. 'The Lock and Key are aligned Allyndra tomorrow the Twins will be kissing.' He paused. 'Tell me the tale while I finish.'

'It is silly, a mythological tale to explain a cosmological phenomenon, a child's tale'

'None the less I would like to hear it.'

'Very well. A very long time ago there were two mortal lovers and these two lovers had such a great love that the gods grew jealous of them. They decided they would take the lovers and fix them in the sky such that they could see each other forever but not touch. However, instead of their love dying it grew instead until with a burst of light the two lovers filled the heavens with light. One goddess realizing the wrong that had been done but could not be undone instead decreed that when the Key and Lock aligned the lovers would be able to kiss.

It is silly, just a simple phenomenon of the two gas giants aligning and their gravitational tug overcoming the Roche limit of the binary stars.'

'I think I prefer the first tale better. Here done!'

"I have to admit that even now the artistry is magnificent and that painting I so did not want now travels with me every posting and hangs in an honoured spot. Gerrin was correct, as I made my weary matron flight back from the sea the Twins as they rose indeed were 'kissing'. According to our mythology the event has always been considered a time of change and so it was for me.

My husband had been headed for a conference and there had been an accident. A year later, now a widow I made another long flight to the shallows to await our children returning from the sea. None ever came, though I waited long past hope."

=^=Lieutenant Warraquim=^= came the call on her communicator.

Allyndra winced at that reference. Everyone treated her Guild House name like a surname when it was not.

=^=We are in transport range.=^=

=^=Alright on my way. Is my luggage ready as well?=^= She traveled fairly light but there were some things she refused to be parted with.

=^=Yes=^=

=^=Very good. I am on my way.=^=

"Computer delete interruption."

[Deleted]

"There is so much more to tell but time again does not allow. Suffice to say here I am on another adventure and I am reminded of the Guild Mother's words: 'When one's curiosity is as wide as the sea, be prepared to ride many currents'. I think I am about to ride another."
