712 words; about a 4 minute read

OLD:

Maria watched as Mimi took in the room, before pointing at the bed. Mimi's question she assumed meant she was asking if it was hers. Maria nodded, hoping she put the word fragments together properly, "De anda Mimi, de anda."

Mimi moved to sit on the edge of the bed staying there for a few seconds., it was very comfortable "Diolch anda Maria"

Maria went and sat down beside Mimi. "You are welcome Mimi."

New:
==== Some time later ====

"Mimi," Maria called out. "time for some food."

Mimi quickly emerged from her bedroom, her somewhat ragged clothes replaced with fresh clean ones Maria had replicated for her. "Maria?"

"Come sit down." Maria motioned to a seat at the table where a set of cutlery awaited her.

Heading for the table Mimi sat down and watched as Maria went towards the replicator.

"Two portions of smoked salmon, steamed mixed vegetables and boiled potatoes." Maria said, other than fish she didn't know what Mimi would eat so she wanted to start her off with something simple.

"Mosti zen taa?" Mimi asked, shocked as plates of food appeared out of thin air from the machine in the wall.

"The replicator," Maria remarked, motioning her daughter over. "It's how we get food, Mimi." Once her adoptive daughter was beside her, she pressed a button on the side of the machine. "Green Tea." she said to the unit.

Mimi watched as a cup of slightly green liquid appeared in the machine. "Foverura"

Maria had noticed Mimi's reaction to the replicator, and while she wasn't sure if "Foverura" meant the tea, or some sort of exclamation, there was only really one way to find out. She picked up the tea cup by the handle, motioning for Mimi to take it, her free hand hovering in case Mimi tried to touch the hot part of the cup, not the handle.

Taking the cup by the handle Mimi sniffed its contents intently. "Usaina bezala caytra." she took a sip and smiled. "mmhh, caytra she pointed at the liquid.

"Caytra," Maria pointed to the drink, "Green Tea." Another word to remember with Mimi, which meant the earlier word Foverura was some sort of surprise at the replicator.

"Li bezala tea" Mimi said, taking the mug with her she headed back to the table to examine the food Maria had replicated for them.

Maria pulled a seat back from the table, motioning for Mimi to sit. She herself went and sat down beside Mimi, waiting till the young Nekomi was settled before she pointed out the items on the plate, letting Mimi choose what she wanted to try first.

Mimi sat down and picked up her fork, she stabbed a piece of potato sniffing it a little then popped it into her mouth. "mmmh polita, mosti li ta?"

"That is potato," Maria remarked, catching the inflection if not the exact words. She was learning Mimi's language as quickly as she could, as was no doubt the young girl learning Standard.

"Potato." Mimi smiled, she ate a few more pieces of potato before stabbing a piece of fish, it smelt similar to what Maria had given her before. "Dampris li kala" She said pointing her fork to Maria, she thought for a moment before waving her hand trying to imitate a fish moving through water.

Maria nodded when Mimi mimic'd a fish swimming, "Fish. This one is Salmon." Maria watched Mimi eat the fish, making a note she seemed to enjoy it. Maria went over to a small box that held a portable holographic projector. Setting on the table, she called up a Salmon on the holographic display. "This is Salmon. From Earth." She pointed to the fish and the display.

"Kala li sayan maiteen." Mimi quickly ate up the majority of her fish.

“Fish is my….” Maria pondered the last word Mimi said, she’d not used to before but with the way Mimi devoured the fish she had a feeling it meant ‘favourite’ ”Kala li andar maiteen?”

Mimi nodded briskly ”Daai

Mria smiled. “Well eat up, we both have a lot of learning to do.”
