Fish are Boring

We've almost arrived at the Latari System. I must admit, I'm looking forward to a change of pace. Who would have thought fish could be boring?

They weren't for the first few months while we played around with the proper balance of oxygen, saline, and mineral levels for both the fish and the seaweed. But now that everything is running like clockwork and we have a meal for one shift every two weeks, it's become...routine. Not even rotating the fish and plants has made it more interesting.

And so, I find myself playing around with hybrids. Mostly, it's been research so far. Lots and lots of research. I don't know how Lieutenant Sandoval finds it so fascinating. It must be her Vulcan side.

I wonder what the captain would say if I created a snapdragon that snapped at intruders. Or would she think I was nuts?

It's a silly notion. One that comes from boredom. Oh, I know it won't last. It never does. But right now, I dream about fish breaking out of their tanks and chasing crew down the corridors. I think I'm going to reserve a holodeck for a weekend and spend it at a spa somewhere.

Scratch that. With my luck, something will happen while I'm gone and I'll feel guilty that I wasn't there to fix it. Time passes. Boredom becomes busy and when we get some shore leave, I'm going to plant a garden of exotic plants and maybe add a fish tank of exotic fish. Ones just for looks.

Or better yet, I'll start raising guinea hens. After all the fish I've tasted, I could use a good fresh hen.
