Once there was a Mother of a Great House that had a reputation for being serene calm and wise. The tale of the this Mother spread and one young lady decided she would go and see just how serene and wise she was. Now this young lady had a reputation for being able to provoke others with insults and a wicked tongue.

She appeared one day and asked the Mother if she would accept the challenge to test her serenity, to which the Mother agreed.

The young woman then proceeded to lay insults of all kinds upon her, her ancestors, her House and even threw items at the Mother to provoke her all in front of her House.

The rest of the House grew angry and wished the Mother would do something about the young lady but the Mother sat there just smiling the entire time.

Finally the young woman ran out of words and energy and finally nodded and left.

The rest of the House disappointed by the fact that the Mother had received so many insults and provocations, asked:

"How could you bear such indignity? Why didn’t you use you respond? Even knowing you might lose the fight, instead of displaying your cowardice in front of us all?"

"If someone comes to you with a gift, and you do not accept it, who does the gift belong to?" asked the Mother

There was some discussion but one pupil finally said, "She who tried to deliver it."

"Correct," replied the Mother and then continued, "The same goes for envy, anger and insults. When they are not accepted, they continue to belong to the one who carried them."

The rest though on this and nodded, indeed the Mother had shown her serenity and now had shown her wisdom as well.
