Personal Log 014

First Officer Jonathan Holliday reporting.

Galileo has successfully returned to Federation space after an unexpected trip using the prototype Sienna device. Whilst we were unable to effect a textbook landing, the ship is at least for now, safer than she was only a few days previously.

Vega colony is not a great distance away from the Sol system, and I for one was glad to see the arrival of a taskforce in orbit to secure and remove both the Sienna device, and any personnel and materials associated with it. That device nearly cost us all our lives, if it's not worth it, then someone will have some explaining to do.

So it seems that Galileo will be remaining on the planet surface for at least the next week or so - the level of repairs being required to most of our systems, not to mention the spaceframe itself has essentially clipped our wings for the meantime.
This crew has been through a lot together, albeit with some more difficult elements amongst our ranks, but nevertheless, I feel that the ship as a whole has served Starfleet well.

Speaking of our crew..I have observed that there has been a large influx of new officers and non-coms to replenish our depleted numbers. New department heads have been substantial in number, and I must ensure that I meet with each of them before we get anywhere near heading back into space....I need to know that the people under my command deserve to take a seat on that Bridge...not just waltz in because they've been assigned there.

In more personal news....I....received a promotion to the rank of full Commander for my actions during the recent mission....something I didn't think that I would be receiving any time soon. With the promotion of Commander Saalm to the rank of Captain only a short time ago, I feel that perhaps she used some of her new-found influence with that rank to override certain...elements...that would rather I not find myself in imminent danger of being given a command of my own.

Not that I'll be letting that happen any time soon....my duty is here...to this...little Nova-class starship. Not out on some warship floating through space looking for trouble....but here, with the crew whose lives are in my hands.

Listen to me...I didn't think I'd be saying that any time soon....only a while ago I hated this ship...small..cramped...badly equipped...full of new recruits, fresh from the academy, and a captain who's adherence to correct protocol can be shaky at best...but now....I don't think there's anywhere else in the fleet that I would rather be.

Should I get time, and should the Captain be able to manage without me for a few days, I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to take a shuttle back to Mars to see my father...apparently, according to the last batch of medical records that Starfleet sent over to me, he is doing well....suffice to say I'm sure Lieutenant Coleman is worthy of some...discreet thanks for her efforts in assisting me....not something I would want Command to hear about...
