Personal Log One: Getting diverted

478 words; about a 2 minute read

"Hi, computer! My name's Jemima. Jemima de la Coeur. I'm a Cadet Senior Grade and this is my very first personal log."

Jemima bounced in her chair, excited about this momentous occasion. "I'm on a three year mission and I thought it would be dull, but already we've been diverted to check out why some colonists have stopped talking to anyone. It's pretty exciting, actually. I mean, we're near Thaliana space... Oh, wait, I'm not supposed to say that. But we are. Not real close, but close enough so that we can see where it is on a stellar map."

"I was on the bridge when the captain got an urgent call and I saw it all. It was just like they tell you in the Academy. Everyone was doing their job and giving the captain information. I got to send a copy of the files to the Chief Science Officer. I hear she used it in a presentation, too. It was so cool."

She spun around in her chair and then paused to make sure no one saw her. But as she was in her quarters, she didn't need to worry, so she spun around again. "I like everyone here, too. They're all nice and helpful. And they don't even care that I'm just a cadet."

There was a long pause. Hey, computer, do I need to give you an official title or anything? Or just say personal log 1? And what happens if I forget what number I'm on? Will you remind me?"

"Please restate the question."

"Oh, yeah. Right. Computer, if I forget what number log I'm on, will you remind me?"

"If you ask for the number of your last personal log, I can give you the answer."

"Oh, good. Then we'll call this Personal Log One: Getting diverted."

"Log title noted."

"Thanks, computer. Wait, am I supposed to thank you? My mamma always taught me to say thank you."

"Thanks are not necessary. However, you are welcome, cadet senior grade Jemima de la Coeur."

"Oh, goodness. And you're polite, too. I'll have to tell my mamma about this. She didn't think Starfleet people were very polite. Or was that just the officers? I don't remember right now."

"Is there anything you require?" the computer asked.

"No, thank you, computer."

"Do you wish to save your log?"

"Oh, that's right. I have to save it, don't I? Not yet. I'm not finished. I want to leave a message for my family, if anything goes wrong. I want to say that I'm very happy in Starfleet, that I have a wonderful ship and crew, and that so far everything is going well. I even got to eat fresh fish and green from aquaponics. It was even good. And that I love them all. Okay, computer. You can save it now. Thank you."

End Log
