Almost the Real Thing

577 words; about a 3 minute read

'Hi Lily! It's uncle Jeroen. I am so, so proud of you for being so patient before going to your ship...'

Lily giggled, as always, at seeing someone she knew in a message. It was strange seeing them on screen when she was used to the real life person. Like they were trapped in a mirror.

'I know that Earth has been a bit boring for you at times. I just wanted to say that you can do this, be patient and wait for Mummy to have finished with the other ship before you go onto the sparkly new one. I also know you must be so bored...so I have attached some hologram files here with some stories I made up. Don't worry...there's dragons and stars in them.'

Lily gave an 'eek' of delight at the words, clapping her hands and looking around the side of the computer as if she could find them if she looked hard enough.

'I will send you messages as often as I can. Right now I am on a moon we are terraforming to make it easier for the miners to live here. It will be beautiful, we have just started making her ready for it. I am sorry I couldn't come with you to your shiny new ship but it is always...a bit of luck with where a person gets placed within Starfleet. You know it and I know it. You are a smart girl after all. So...I love you. Take good care of yourself and your Mummy..and I promise to take good care of myself. Bye darling!'

Lily waved with the same amount of enthusiasm as if he was in the room with her, her legs swinging happily on the chair. She leant forward, carefully pressing her finger to the reply button, having had enough messages from her uncle Jeroen now to understand. Well, mostly. She was still convinced that fairies had to be involved in delivering messages so far and fast.

"Hi uncle 'Roen!" she leant forward eagerly onto the edge of the desk, grinning as she looked into the screen recording her message. "Are you really on a moon? Is there a man living in it? Does he have a hat made out of cheese? And hair all made out of 'sketty? Be nice to him! Don't tear-tare-terrafry-thingy his face!"

She covered her mouth with a laugh, shaking her head as her nose wrinkled with it. "Can't wait for the shiny ship! Captain Stardust says we might be flying for a looooong time. I hope the ship doesn't get tired. I'd be tired..."

Lily sighed just at the very thought of it, setting her chin in her hand. "Mummy's been busy. And sick. She's better now though, she said the ice cream fixed her. I'll tell her that when I'm snuffly. I was good though, I only locked Luke up once! And I even let him out!" she assured with a solemn nod.

Lily looked down to her hand, biting on her lower lip for a long moment. "Send me more stories? Please? I miss you. I hug Ash every night before sleeps. Mummy says you get them. Let me know? Cos I'll give a hug in the morning too if you do," her grin returned at that and she blew him a kiss goodbye.

Messages weren't quite as good as real uncles. But they were pretty, pretty close.
