Headed "Home"

Posted on 30 Jun 2018 @ 2:21pm by Lieutenant Amaranai Franklin

417 words; about a 2 minute read

Amaranai didn’t want to think of home. She had made a habit of avoiding those thoughts, especially around Charlotte. But she wasn’t with her sister now. She wasn’t anywhere near the girl and yet, she was still thinking about home. The security officer wondered if it had been meeting Lirha’s mother that had prompted the thoughts or perhaps the playful, yet serious relationship that Lirha had with Nesh. No. Amaranai knee it was because Lirha’s relationship with her mother seemed honest and loving - two words that Amaranai was certain her mother didn’t know the definition of.

Amaranai had mentioned to Lirha that she kept most secrets from her mother simply because she could, whereas Lirha’s mother seemed to know everything going on with her daughter. Amaranai had made it very clear to her parents that they would never know what was going on with their daughter. No matter what they told her, she never told them the whole truth. Even when they had to get her out of jail, she would simply rattle off some nonsense about how she got in there and that she would never do it again (she would usually find different ways of accomplishing her goals after that).

But now there was Charlotte to consider. All of her life, Amaranai had been looking out for herself. When she was a child, she had to learn how to do things. When she was a teenager, she had to fend from herself against her own siblings. As an adult, in Starfleet, she has managed to keep to herself as best she could and find her way onto a magnificent starship. It has even led her into her relationship with Lirha. But that same relationship could also be hindering her building a relationship with her sister.

Right now, Amaranai knew that her sister was standing on the brink of cynicism about Starfleet and the willingness to accept her role on a starship. Right now, Amaranai understood that Charlotte was not convinced and Amaranai knew it was because the two of them never talked about it. That was going to have to change if Charlotte was going to look to her older sister as a role model.

For now, though, Amaranai could relax with Lirha in her arms, as they traveled back to Avondale Station. For now, Amaranai could think about how to change her interactions with her sister and how to make sure Charlotte knew she was wanted.
