Chief Counselor's Log #5 - Success?

Posted on 27 Sep 2012 @ 7:02pm by Lieutenant JG Delainey Carlisle

348 words; about a 2 minute read

The Captain and Lieutenant Coleman have been rescued. Coleman has already been released from Sickbay, and Pola is certain Lirha will be healed and back on the bridge within hours. It'll be a true boost for morale, which understandably, took a major hit in the past few days.

Hell, even I can't deny the effect that single sentence has had on me. We've been through so much as a crew and lost so many in such a short period of time, it seems insane not only to resist celebrating what those words represent, but also to do anything but focus on them with laser-like precision.

Some might even say it's healthier to focus on the good, when in the end, that's all we can control.

By all accounts, we have succeeded. Haven't we?

Have we won if the Captain is back on the bridge within hours of her rescue? Does it matter that she was tortured within an inch of her life if most of the physical wounds have healed? See no wounds, see no evil?

Have we won if Lirha is not only physically capable of standing on her own two feet, but seems to possess the fiery will to get back on the bridge and lead us? Does it matter that her physical capabilities are currently being managed by medicine, and her fiery will is likely the adrenaline fueled defense mechanism that might as well be a tap dancer trying to keep the pain and trauma away?

Have we won if we can help a Vorta, and a Vorta can help us, on the bridge no less? Does it matter the Klingons, once our ally, tried to kill us?

Have we triumphed over trauma if a lost arm can be replaced with a functional substitute? Does it matter the rehab will take weeks and the simplest tasks will never feel the same?

On the surface, we have moved forward. I am grateful for the surface, for the good that is created from it is all we can control.

Whether we have truly suceeded, I don't know.
