[ON]

Waking up in a blind panic, Pola tried to gathering her surroundings, trying to remember where she was. As her breath ran a race through her chest, she managed to close her eyes, leaning forward gentlyto try regulate her breating and go over in her mind what had just happened.

Pola found had been asleep one minute and then there was...a dream in the brief moment before she awoke. As her breathing slowed, the tightening sensation in her throat lessened and she became aware she was shivering from a cold sweat which covered her body.

Moving one hand, to wipe away the sweat on her forehead, the Doctor continued to repeat reassurances in her mind, trying to calm her body, Soft slow breaths Pola, in...out...in...out... Once she found herself calmer, the Doctor swung her legs over the edge of her breath and tried to figure out what had just happened and where she was.

Pola recognised that she had awoken in a panic attack, something which hadn't happened to her since her early years in the academy, an event she was so sure which she had managed to get over.

Looking up in order to take in her surroundings, she realised she was still in her old quarters on the USS Galileo. When she had met with the XO, he hadn't given authorisation to move into a senior officer's quaters. She made a note, she should talk to Will in the morning, he would know what to do.

All of these thoughts running through her head, even though they may been benign to others, helped to reground her. Actions she needed to take, facts of what she needed too do, it all worked to pull her away from the blind panic she had awoken from.

Walking over to her dresser, she striped herself of the old acedemy t-shirt, which was now drowned with sweat, and pulled out an old favourite of hers, a men's t-shirt 3sizes too big, intended for comfort more then anything else. She felt it was comfort that she needed right now.

Walking over to her window, to watch the streak of stars pass by outside, her mind was brought back to the dream she had just had just had. For some crazy reason, John had been holding her in a position to get ready to dance the the Irish step dance, the Siege of Ennis with her, holding both of his hand's in her. All she could remember of that was a safe feeling. It caused her memory to flick back to the night they had danced a waltz together.

Shaking her head to bring herself back on track she remembered what happened next, he had turned to her and repeated his words from a few hours ago, "...something to write home about..." and at this point she had woken up in the blind panic, the comfort of him holding her hand forgotten and the panic the words he spoke overpowering all rational.

Now somewhat under control, Pola smiled to herself she wondered if it was the thought of John which caused the cold sweat or the actual words she'd said.

Watching the stars it suddenly dawned on Pola that she was regressing back to her old defence mechanism, hide behind the humour and what feels safe. There was humour behind dreaming of dancing with her XO, her new boss, and his hands felt safe...she felt he was the first person she had gotten to know well onboard. What she was hiding from was his words ...something to write home about...

Walking back over to the dresser, Pola picked up one of the photos which she had rested ontop, ignoring the other one for the moment. The one she held in her hand was of a woman, her hair turned grey but her eyes an identical colour to her own. A stormy grey which reflected laughter but if you knew her well enough, you'd see the pain hidden behind....a pain she knew she had caused.

"Mathair Chriona....you would be so proud of me today...I finally reached the highest of positions I can achieve as a Starfleet Doctor, I'm the new Chief Medical Officer of the USS Galileo. I know you already probable know this, looking down on me from your heaven, but still...I wanted you to be the first I told."

Watching as a tear hit the pane of glass on the photo, Pola let the rest of them fall. She knew they were tears of happiness for her achievement, intermingled with tears of pain. Pain for what she had lost, pain for the one person she wished to reach out to but could nolonger.

As the raw emotion, shook through her body, Pola moved back over to her bed, carrying the photo with her, before curling up in a ball, holding the photo beside her face. "Cronam thu, mathair chriona." Closing her eyes, Pola allowed the tears and sobs to be released, knowing that sleep wouldn't return.
